Cultural Specificity in Nollywood comedy films

In his seminal work on humor, Noel Carroll suggests that comedy is deeply rooted in the cultural context in which it originates, and its resonance may be confined to specific societies, struggling to transcend national boundaries. This paper explores Carroll's assertion within the context of Nollywood, Nigeria's vibrant and diverse film industry. With over 250 ethnic groups, numerous languages, and a wide range of comedic sensibilities, Nollywood offers a compelling case study for investigating the cultural specificity of comedy. This study focuses on two Nollywood films, The Wedding Party Part One (2016) and Aki and Pawpaw (2021), to examine how certain comedic elements, such as set pieces, gags, jokes, wordplay, and characters, adhere to or transcend the cultural specificity Carroll describes. By analyzing these films, this paper seeks to understand how Nollywood's diversity shapes its comedy and whether certain comedic themes can resonate beyond Nigeria’s borders

Water Ethics for sustainable Rural Community-Based Water Service System in Malang Regency, Indonesia

The sustainability of rural-based water services for villagers is typically determined by technical operational factors of the service. These factors encompass the production and distribution of water to end users, the management of financial records, and the availability of managerial competence, environmental awareness, and social community support. The objective of this qualitative study is to elucidate the factors that contribute to the sustainability of the village water service system administered by the water users association. The data presented herein was collected through a combination of in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation with informants from the management of the association and the head of the Association of Water Users in Malang City. The findings revealed that the management of water users associations prioritizes the utilization of water for the social welfare of residents, particularly the economically disadvantaged, over the pursuit of financial gain for the institution. This approach is exemplified by the exemption from water pipe installation and monthly subscription fees for houses of worship, along with the provision of discounts ranging from 25 to 50 percent for economically disadvantaged households seeking to install water pipes. Moreover, the management establishes a more inexpensive subscription rate in comparison to that of the local government-managed drinking water company. Moreover, a portion of the profits from water management are allocated to enhance the social welfare of residents. The ethical norm of water for the common good is a determining factor in the sustainability of water services. This commitment is further reinforced by the values of sincerity, volunteerism, and a genuine concern for enhancing the well-being of residents

A Portrait of the Legal Awareness of Indonesian Educators (Teachers) about Violence Against Children in the School Environment: Study in State Senior High School, Malang City, East Java- Indonesia

The increasing number of child violence cases, particularly in schools, has become a pressing issue. Violence in schools occurs in various forms, including physical, psychological, and sexual abuse. This article examines and analyzes the legal awareness of educators regarding child violence in schools (a case study at SMAN in Malang City) and the factors influencing such legal awareness. This research employs an empirical method with a juridical qualitative approach. The results show that the legal awareness of educators concerning child violence in schools, as studied at SMAN in Malang City, reveals that while the educators are knowledgeable about the law, they lack a deeper understanding of the specific legal provisions. This is influenced by several factors, including their understanding and  legal behavior patterns, age, internalization of legal knowledge, and personal experiences (legal attitudes) within society. However, their legal attitudes are highly responsive and proactive regarding child violence in the school environment

Implementation of Community Participation Policies in the Road Infrastructure Development

This study describes community participation and analyzes the supporting and inhibiting factors in implementing the Malang Regent Decree on Determining the Status of Road Sections as Regency Roads. The research was conducted in the Pakisaji Subdistrict, Malang Regency. The data analysis technique in this research uses qualitative analysis. The results show that implementing community participation policies in road infrastructure development based on the Malang Regent Decree has been carried out quite well by Edward's theory, which includes communication, resources, disposition, and bureaucratic structure. However, according to Cohen's theory, the implementation has not fully met the level of community participation, especially in the evaluation of activities. Supporting factors for success include the quality of human resources, community awareness, leadership commitment, understanding of road infrastructure, and access to information. The inhibiting factors include limited human resources, budget constraints, geographical challenges, the absence of a unique team, and less detailed technical regulations. Policy implementers are expected to increase the workforce, form special teams, analyze budgets in detail, optimize resources, and adjust technical regulations to increase community participation in road infrastructure development

Study of the Implementation of Policies on the Utilization of Funds for Urban Village Empowerment Activities

This study aims to analyze the implementation of the policy on the utilization of urban village funds for community development and empowerment and identify the inhibiting factors. The research was conducted in Talun Village, Talun District, Blitar Regency. The data analysis technique in this study uses descriptive qualitative data analysis. This research found that the success of urban village fund management depends on the capacity of the apparatus and transparency in budget management. Community participation in planning through the village development plan deliberation (Musrenbangkel) and supervision of using funds improves program accountability and effectiveness. Internal oversight needs to be strengthened with regular evaluations to ensure reporting transparency. The main supporting factors are clear regulations, funds availability, and urban village officials' commitment. At the same time, obstacles include technical constraints in using financial applications, limited human resources, and low community awareness of supervision. While the urban village fund contributes to infrastructure development and community empowerment, the program's sustainability needs to be ensured by increasing the capacity of the apparatus, a more muscular monitoring system, and the integration of information technology to improve the transparency and efficiency of financial reporting. This research is expected to improve the effectiveness of Urban village Fund management through strengthening apparatus capacity, transparency, community participation, supervision, technological innovation, and more flexible and sustainable policies

Integrating Simulation-Based and Hands-On Experiments: A Guided Inquiry Learning Packet on Magnetic Induction

Students often struggle with magnetic induction due to its abstract nature and complex relationships between flux, emf, and current. Simulations are known to be effective tools in enhancing understanding complex and abstract physics concepts. But simulations alone limit the complete development of procedural skills of students during physical experiments. On the other hand, guided inquiry learning promotes scientific literacy among learners as it encourages exploration, formulation of hypotheses, and  analyzing evidence. Combining guided inquiry-based learning with simulations and hands-on activities can furtherly enhance understanding and achievement by promoting exploration and active engagement. This study developed a guided inquiry learning packet that integrates simulation-based and hands-on activities to enhance student understanding and academic performance on Magnetic Induction. The packet combines PhET simulations with  hands-on activities to provide a comprehensive learning experience. The developmental research design supported by both qualitative and quantitative approaches was employed to investigate the effect of this integrated approach on students’ conceptual gain and academic performance. The overall evaluation confirmed that the learning packet meets high standards of validity and acceptance, with the overall mean score reflecting an excellent rating. The impact of the guided inquiry learning packet on students' academic performance was assessed using the devised achievement tests, activities, and problem sets. The results from the six sections that used the learning packet revealed that students' academic performance significantly improved and the average class gain across all sections ranged from 0.48 to 0.62, reflecting a notable improvement in academic performance
