    Get PDF
The hotel sector contributes to a country’s employment and economic revenue. Despite this, it is among the most energy-intensive sectors, which is increasing, and is met by a diversified energy sources. Energy wastage with fluctuating energy prices and inefficiency leads to high energy costs that continue to rise due to the demand for exceptional services by hotel guests. These costs are passed to products and services to cover the increased costs. Although energy costs are the most controllable among hotel costs, many hotels struggle to manage them due to a lack of knowledge of what drives energy costs high and a poor understanding of the breakdown of energy costs. Star-rated hotels need to understand energy consumption patterns for economic sustainability. The objective was to assess the role of energy monitoring technologies in managing energy costs in star-rated hotels in Nairobi City County, Kenya. Using an embedded design, an in-depth interview study with a purposive sample of 18 hotel general managers and 18 accounting staff with knowledge and expertise provided detailed insights into energy costs and energy monitoring technologies. Six main themes emerged. The findings provide support for hoteliers to adopt energy monitoring technologies across energy consumption areas so as to develop an understanding of energy cost structure to effectively manage energy costs. In addition, they help pinpoint high consumption points and inefficiencies, leading to the implementation of targeted energy savings measures and ultimately lower energy costs

Does Economic Growth Equate Prosperity in Nigeria? An Analysis of Income Inequality in Nigeria's Emerging Economy

    Get PDF
Nigeria, holding the title of Africa's largest economy, embodies a perplexing contradiction as, significant macroeconomic growth coexists with deeply entrenched and escalating income inequality. While international headlines often spotlight the country's burgeoning tech hubs in Lagos and a vibrant services sector, this narrative of an "emerging economy" obscures a more troubling reality. Realistically, the fruits of this growth are concentrated in the hands of a minority, leaving hundreds of millions impoverished. This paper investigates this disconnect, by probing the intricate relationship between Nigeria's economic expansion and its stark income disparities. By employing a mixed-methods approach that analyses secondary data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) and the World Bank (2010-2022) alongside a review of contemporary literature, this study uncovers a persistent pattern of non-inclusive growth. Our analysis points to several key culprits: a stubborn over-reliance on the volatile oil sector, deep-seated regional disparities, a crisis in educational equity, and the uneven distribution of gains from the digital revolution. The study concludes that Nigeria's current development path is unsustainable. Without a decisive shift towards targeted pro-poor policies, substantial investment in human capital, and genuine economic diversification, the nation risks exacerbating social fragmentation. This paper ends with concrete recommendations designed to steer policymakers towards a more equitable and resilient economic future by seeking to move beyond rhetoric and actively deploy incentives and infrastructure to catalyze non-oil sectors. This includes modernizing agriculture through value-chain development, supporting light manufacturing with a focus on local content, and strategically investing in renewable energy to build the economy of the future

    Get PDF
Problem Statement:  In Kenya, and particularly in Nakuru County, road construction projects continue to experience recurrent challenges such as cost overruns, delayed timelines, poor workmanship, and disputes among stakeholders. The County Integrated Development Plan (2023) revealed that approximately 60% of road construction projects were either delayed or abandoned, with cost overruns ranging between 20% and 50%. Moreover, about 30% of newly completed roads show signs of deterioration within a year, and only 15% of completed projects receive adequate maintenance. Limited citizen involvement in project planning and monitoring has been identified as a key contributor to these inefficiencies (Ndung’u & Chege, 2023). In addition, the county allocates a relatively small portion of its budget around 10–15% to infrastructure, and only about 30% of project managers possess formal qualifications in project management or engineering, further compounding the problem. General objective of the study: Influence of joint reporting in M&E on roads construction projects performance in Nakuru County, Kenya Research Design: The study adopted a descriptive research design. Finding: Joint reporting (B = 1.045, Sig. = 0.000) is the most substantial and statistically significant predictor of project performance. Conclusions: Among all the participatory practices examined, joint reporting was found to be the most influential in determining project performance. The study concludes that transparent and inclusive reporting processes provide the highest level of accountability, enhance stakeholder trust, and ensure that deviations from planned activities are quickly addressed. Recommendation: The study recommends that inclusive decision-making practices be reinforced in road construction projects. While its direct impact on performance was relatively weak compared to other practices, joint decision-making plays an essential role in ensuring community ownership, reducing resistance, and promoting stakeholder satisfaction

India’s Archaeological Tapestry: From Prehistoric Settlements to Buddhist Monasteries

    Get PDF
Indian archaeology is a multidisciplinary field that unveils the profound cultural, religious, and historical heritage of the subcontinent. From prehistoric settlements to colonial-era discoveries, it spans a wide range of studies including ancient civilizations, religious monuments, inscriptions, coins, and architectural developments. The Indus Valley Civilization exemplifies early urban planning, advanced trade networks, and sophisticated governance systems. The Buddhist period significantly enriched Indian archaeology, leaving behind monastic complexes, stupas, and rock-cut caves that offer critical insights into the evolution of religious practices, education, and art. Key architectural structures such as stupas, chaityas, and viharas, along with learning centers like Nalanda and Vikramashila, reflect India’s rich tradition of intellectual and spiritual discourse. Cultural syncretism is evident in the fusion of Greco-Roman and Indian artistic styles in regions like Gandhara and Mathura. Sites such as Ellora and Ajanta further illustrate the coexistence and integration of Buddhist and Hindu traditions. Although Buddhism eventually declined in India due to a Hindu revival and external invasions, its philosophical and artistic legacy continued to thrive across Central Asia, China, and Southeast Asia. Modern archaeological techniques—like carbon dating, satellite imaging, and LiDAR have deepened our understanding of India’s past, highlighting its globally significant and enduring cultural legacy

This quantitative study aimed to utilize Salazar’s Grouping Method in improving grade 9 learners’ performance on the applications of right triangles. The researcher adapted and validated a solving real-life problems from a variety of sources that was originally created using a two-way Table of Specification (TOS) that was aligned with the DepEd-MELC Curriculum. Ninety-six (96) learners from one of the branches of Mindanao State University External Units in Lanao del Sur, Philippines, forty-eight (48) learners were assigned to the control group and forty-eight (48) to the experimental group, who participated in the study in two weeks of intervention. Learners’ performance refers to the problem-solving test that was rated with a validated rubric. A problem-solving test was used, which consisted of five problem-solving problems. The hypothesis was evaluated at the 0.05 level of significance, and the data were analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test, Wilcoxon signed-rank test, and intraclass coefficients. The findings of the study revealed both groups made improvements; however, the experimental group showed significant differences in the posttest results with a mean of 17.57 (SD = 4.64), categorized as very satisfactory improvement, and higher than the control group's mean of 12.92 (SD = 4.86), categorized as satisfactory improvement. This implies that utilizing Salazar’s Grouping Method was effective to improve learners’ performance, particularly on the applications of right triangles. Learners’ performance was found to have improved from no improvement to very satisfactory, with a mean gained score of 14.65.   Based on the results, learners require additional exposure, practice, and collaborative activity that will boost their confidence and communication skills, such as the Salazar’s Grouping Method, and to fully learn the applications of right triangles and apply them to problem solving. Thus, integrating interviews and student reflections will help to further explore performance and understand more deeply the effects of the Salazar’s Grouping Method
