Social Impact of Synod of Diamper on Kerala Christians and Society

    Get PDF
The important value of the Synod is that its decrees served as a historical account that brought to light many of the ancient practices of the Thomas Christians, and it served as the source of the later discipline of the church in India.  At the same time the strict measures taken by Archbishop Menezes to burn and destroy ancient Syriac books and missals led to the destruction of documents about the history, customs, tradition and canonical discipline of the Thomas Christians.  There were social as well as religious abuses in Malabar and the Synod took firm steps to correct them.  In this sense the good intention of Archbishop Menezes was to be appreciated.  The decisions of the Synod to evangelize the low castes and to uplift their social status were praiseworthy. Some influences of the Synod still exist. The Synod of Diamper caused the beginning of the administration of the diocese and parishes by the Bishop and the hierarchy was established.  The Decrees of the Synod influenced the emergence of the present Christian culture of Kerala. In the social field, the Synod of Diamper created a new awareness.  The Synod touched all areas of social degradation.  It gave a separate identity to the Thomas Christians among the Hindus.  They were taught equality of men before God.  In short the acts and decrees of the Synod revolutionized the Kerala society of the 17th century, especially the social situation of the St.Thomas Christians

Overcrowding in Malaysian Prisons: Are Private Prisons the Answer?

    Get PDF
This study examines public perceptions of the proposal to establish private prisons in Malaysia, focusing on prison overcrowding as a primary driving factor. The issue of overcrowding has long been a major concern for Malaysia’s correctional system, raising questions about alternative solutions to manage inmate populations effectively. Given the ongoing debate surrounding prison privatization, this study aims to explore public attitudes, acceptance levels, and perceived effectiveness of private prisons in addressing this issue. A quantitative exploratory research method was employed, involving 2,014 respondents who participated in a structured questionnaire survey. The questionnaire comprised 56 questions across seven sections, using a six-point Likert scale to measure responses. To ensure data reliability, a pilot test was conducted, yielding Cronbach’s Alpha values between 0.78 and 0.87, indicating good internal consistency and reliability in measuring public perceptions. The findings reveal that 80.98% of respondents recognize Malaysia's prison overcrowding issue (Mean = 2.69, SD = 1.45), with a statistically significant awareness level (t-Test = -9.59, p<0.05). However, only 53.93% of respondents agree that overcrowding needs urgent attention (Mean = 3.31, SD = 1.62), suggesting that while the issue is acknowledged, public concern varies in terms of urgency. Support for private prisons as a solution to overcrowding remains moderate and divided, with 54.97% of respondents in favour of their establishment (Mean = 3.42, SD = 1.58) and 50.49% believing in their effectiveness (Mean = 3.57, SD = 1.61). Although t-Test values confirm statistical significance (p<0.05), public scepticism persists, indicating concerns regarding costs, accountability, and ethical implications of private prisons. Overall, while prison overcrowding is widely recognized, support for private prisons is neither overwhelming nor entirely rejected. The findings suggest that further public engagement, policy analysis, and feasibility studies are necessary to assess whether private prisons can be a viable solution to Malaysia’s correctional challenges. Future research should also explore alternative approaches, such as sentencing reforms, rehabilitation programs, and community-based corrections, to ensure a comprehensive and ethical strategy for managing the nation’s prison system

    Get PDF
This research aims to describe and analyze internal bureaucratic reform and identify the driving and inhibiting factors in its implementation. The research was conducted at the Center for Development and Quality Assurance of Vocational Education in Automotive and Electronics (BBPPMPV BOE) Malang, Ministry of Education and Culture. The data analysis technique used a qualitative descriptive method. The findings in the study show that implementing the Internal Bureaucratic Reform policy at BBPPMPV BOE Malang refers to George Edward III's theory, including bureaucratic structure, communication, resources, and disposition. The organizational structure and standard operating procedures (SOPs) have been well implemented to ensure services run according to the rules. The communication system is also effective through various forums and internal media, which convey information quickly. In terms of resources, quality human resources support the organization's success, although the regeneration of teachers still needs to be improved. The budget provided by the government each year is still insufficient for equipment renewal. The main inhibiting factor is the fulfillment of the Integrity Zone document towards a Clean Serving Bureaucratic Area (ZI WBBM), which is still administrative and without actual implementation, so improvements are needed in the link between policy and implementation in the field. The study's results are expected to increase the effectiveness of bureaucratic reform at BBPPMPV BOE by strengthening the implementation of SOPs, internal communication, employee training, inclusive services, and administrative order so that reform is not just document fulfillment but sustainable

    Get PDF
This study investigated selected agricultural finance options by the central bank of Nigeria using the Agricultural Loan Guarantee Scheme Fund, Commercial Bank Loans, and Interest Rates on Nigeria's agricultural production spanning the period from 1981 to 2020, utilizing the ARDL methodology. The primary challenge faced by the agricultural sector in Nigeria, is the lack of adequate funding. Many farmers are unable to provide collateral for loans and struggle to meet the stringent requirements associated with bank loans. Consequently, farmers often steer clear of these formal institutions and seek credit from sources with high-interest rates. The study's findings indicate that, in the long run, the Agricultural Loan Guarantee Fund, commercial bank loans, and interest rates all have a positive impact on agricultural production in Nigeria. Notably, the study also reveals that agricultural loan guarantees and commercial bank loans exert a robust positive influence on short-term agricultural production. Therefore, increasing the availability of these funding sources to farmers could substantially boost agricultural production in Nigeria. Furthermore, the study uncovers that higher interest rates have a negative and significant effect on agricultural production, implying that an interest rate hike hampers agricultural development
