Anica Savić Rebac on the Conceptual Sources of The Ray of the Microcosm

Petar II Petrović Njegoš is one of the major subjects throughout Anica Savić Rebac’s work. It is a recurring topic not only in a number of fundamental studies on the ideological sources of The Ray of the Microcosm (Njegoš and Bogomilism 1951, Njegoš, Kabbalah and Philo 1952), but also in her work as a translator. Prof. Savić Rebac translated the poem into German (1937, published 1986) and English (1957, edited together with the comprehensive introductory study The Poet and His Position). Highlighting three traditional philosophical and religious concepts in the metaphysical background of The Ray (the Orphic idea about the fall of the divine soul into matter, NeoPlatonic philosophy of light and Manichaean concept of the cosmic struggle between the forces of light and darkness), Anica Savić Rebac creates the preconditions for a modern approach to the study of the ideological and literary-historical heritage ingrained in the deepest layers of Njegoš’s epic. Yet on the other hand, persisting in the belief in the crucial role of ’primary sources’, viz. folklore, non-literary tradition (allegedly of Bogomil origin), Prof. Savić Rebac remains consistent with the older, late romantic (’Kostićian’) habit of interpreting The Ray, which in principle downplays the importance of literary influences, insisting mainly on the ’original’ and ’indigenous’ character of the poet’s inspiration

Animal management in the Medieval Koprijan fortress: Archaeofaunal remains from the Upper Town

    No full text
Koprijan fortress is located on the slopes of Seličevica mountain above the right bank of the southern Morava River near the city of Niš (Southern Serbia). It represents a well-preserved Medieval fortified towns in Serbia. The town was rebuilt during the reign of Prince Lazar in 1372, when it was in the system of defence against the Turks. After the Turkish capture of the town in 1451, the fortress was abandoned, because it was outside the zone of military operations. Koprijan was recorded as a cultural monument in the early years after the Second World War, but archaeological research began recently, in 2022. In the first three campaigns, the Upper Town area was mostly explored, at the level of the most recent use from the late 14th and early 15th centuries. During these campaigns, animal remains were meticulously collected. This paper aims to present preliminary results of archaeofaunal analyses and try to unveil exploitation strategies and dietary patterns of the inhabitants of the Korpijan fortress throughout the late 14th and the first half of the 15th century. So far, the remains of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles were confirmed. Among mammals caprines were the most dominant, followed by cattle, pigs, and dogs, while the game is represented by wild boar and red deer. The bird class includes geese, chicken, and ducks, and cyprinids were the only fish representatives. A single reptile find belonged to the turtle. Since the archaeological research of Koprijan will continue in the future, the analysis of new archaeozoological material will enrich the current understanding of human- animal relations in the past and profound the knowledge of the way animals were exploited in Medieval Serbia.2nd ICAZ Medieval Period Working Group Meeting, 2-6. Preliminary results of the use-wear analysis of Early Quina artefacts from Velika Balanica (Serbia)

Previous analyses of lithic artefacts from Layer 3 of Velika Balanica, dated to the period before 290 ka, showed that the Early Quina complex occurs in this layer, very similar to the Yabrudian, which was confirmed at the sites in the Levant (Mihailović et al., 2022). At Balanica, as well as at the Yabrudian sites, a large number of typical Quina scrapers with 3–4 degrees of working edge reduction sequences were found. Tools were found in and around the combustion feature that occupied at least 6 m2, associated with numerous and highly fragmented remains of ibex and red deer (Marín-Arroyo, 2014). In this paper, the preliminary results of use-wear analysis of lithic artefacts, together with scrapers, originating from Layer 3 of Velika Balanica are represented. The results of the analysis show a variety of utilisation modes. Even though the studied assemblage has undergone various post-depositional surface modifications, it was possible to recover the activities that took place. Like at the Yabrudian site of Qesem cave, the tools were used to process hide, bone, and wood at Velika Balanica (Lemorini et al., 2016). A certain number of tools have been used for short and some for prolonged activities, indicating the nature of the hominin occupation of the area, which offered new insights into the daily activities of the Early Middle Palaeolithic groups. The analysis results show that the similarities in the manufacture and use of tools in the Levant and Southeastern Europe were not accidental. Rather, they indicate the unity of cultural and behavioural changes during the transition from the Lower to the Middle Palaeolithic in the entire area of the Eastern Mediterranean.Conferencen Eastern Mediterranean Contact Area in the Early Prehistory, Friday 6th and Saturday 7th December 2024, Department of Archaeology, Faculty of Philosophy University of Belgrad

New insights into the lithic assemblages from burial contexts at Zvejnieki, Latvia

    No full text
This paper presents new results, and offers preliminary interpretations, of a recent functional study of lithic artefacts from burial contexts at Zvejnieki, carried out as part of the AHRC-funded Stone Dead Project. Zvejnieki is one of the largest Stone Age hunter-gatherer burials grounds in NE Europe, located along a drumlin on the northern shore of Lake Burtieks in northern Latvia. According to the radiocarbon dates cemetery was used between 7500 – 2500 cal BC. Through a combination of geology, technology, trace wear analysis, and spatial/contextual studies, we have been able to identify patterns in the choice of objects placed into the graves, some of them used, others made specifically for burial. By combining this information with biographical data for the associated human skeletal remains, it becomes possible to identify the kinds of links that were made between specific categories of artefact and different kinds of people during Baltic Stone Age mortuary rites and rituals.30th EAA Annual Meeting Rome, Italy 28th – 31st August 202

Saxa loquuntur: Understanding ordinary people through the tales of stones

Our knowledge of ancient history and classical antiquity, in general, depends largely on the accuracy and soundness of documentary evidence. The importance of epigraphic sources for our knowledge of the ancient world is undeniable. Inscriptions represent an essential primary source that stands before us as inscribed thousands of years ago. They contain thoughts that have not been distorted by copying errors and misinterpretations typically associated with manuscript transmission. A valuable resource for historians, archaeologists, and other fields of research, inscriptions provide data on a wide range of topics, including the history and organisation of the vast Roman Empire, laws, administration, religion, emperors, military, socioeconomic relations, and so on. However, epigraphy also provides insight into the lives of ordinary people and gives voice to those who have been brushed aside throughout history. Communities, families, and individuals who do not play a major role in politics or social upheaval, who care for their families and loved ones, who worship gods or a god, who experience loss and death, and who fulfil their duties, come alive before us thanks to epigraphic material. The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate the ways in which epigraphic corpora can enrich our understanding of the daily lives of people whose actions have left no lasting impression on the pages of history. We should take the opportunity to gain insight into their family dynamics, their views on family, religion, and duty. The stones also bring out their views on death, loss, and love, which make them seem not so distant. Loyal colleagues and friends, dutiful soldiers and citizens, grieving parents and loving spouses speak to us through inscriptions from all corners of the Roman Empire

Dati nalazi sugerišu važnost negovanja interkulturalnosti u školskom sistemu kroz negovanje raznovrsnosti, podsticanje procesa istraživanja sopstvenog etničkog identiteta, negovanje nediskriminatornih obrazovnih praksi i preispitivanje predrasuda. The contemporary multicultural society places social identities, particularly those of minority groups, under the spotlight of social science research. This study aimed to investigate the interplay between ethnic and religious identity among adolescents belonging to both the ethnic majority and minority groups (Bosnian, Hungarian, Roma) in Serbia. Additionally, it explored the influence of a school’s ethnic composition on the development of ethnic identity. The study involved 470 secondary school students from 16 schools in Serbia. Instruments used included assessments of the centrality of ethnic and religious identity and the progression of students’ ethnic identity. The results indicate a strong interconnection between ethnic and religious identity, with minority group students exhibiting more centralized ethnic and religious identities. A significant finding underscores the impact of a school’s ethnic structure on ethnic identity development for both minority and majority students. For ethnic minority students, a mixed-ethnic school structure is most stimulating, while for ethnic majority students, it is a structure where they constitute the minority. These findings emphasize the significance of fostering diversity and interculturality in schools through initiatives that promote ethnic and religious identity development, implement non-discriminatory educational policies, and challenge prejudice.Saopštenja sa konferencije "Neizbežnost interkulturalnosti", Filozofski fakultet Univerziteta u Beogradu,13. i 14. oktobar 2023. godin

Rooting polysemy in cue competition-based error-driven learning.

    No full text
The processing advantage of polysemous words is typically attributed to the relatedness of their senses (paper – writing paper /scientific paper). Filipović Đurđević and Kostić (2023) demonstrated that this advantage could arise in the process of error-driven learning (EDL). Using a simple two-layer network and the Rescorla-Wagner learning rule, the authors mapped the orthographic form of the target word (in the form of overlapping bigraphs as the input: #p_pa_ap_pe_er_r#) onto the corresponding lemma and the flanking words (words that co- occurred with the target word within a +/-3 window as the output (The, white, writing, paper, is, super, soft). In their approach, semantic relatedness among the senses was approximated by the relatedness among the contexts in which the target form occurred, and the latter was operationalised by shared flanking words. The learning in this approach was simulated by relying on competition among both the cues (bigraphs) and the outcomes (flanking words). However, typical EDL approaches (Milin et al., 2017) relied solely on cue competition. In this paper, we aimed to conduct such simulations to inspect whether polysemy effects may arise just from cue competition. We ran two separate EDL simulations mapping 1) trigraphs to polysemous word forms (G2L) and 2) mapping flanking words onto polysemous word forms (L2L). Given that L2L simulation captures semantic information, we predicted that the EDL measures derived from L2L simulation would outperform the G2L measures at predicting number of senses (NoS; taken from Mišić et al., 2023) and processing (visual lexical decision task RT; taken from Mišić et al., 2021). Gradient-boosting machines suggested that L2L- diversity had the greatest relative influence on RT, and generalised additive models confirmed its predictive power (β = -.02, SE = .01, t = 2.24, p = .02). L2L-diversity is considered to indicate the variability of contexts in which the word occurs (i.e. the diversity of flanking words). It can thus be interpreted also as an indicator of semantic ambiguity, as confirmed by its correlation with NoS (r = .27 – .42). Our results revealed that L2L-diversity facilitated word recognition, thus suggesting that polysemy can arise from the cue-competition-only approach and that the nature of polysemy advantage can be captured in EDL through the diversity of contexts. Further research is planned to separate the effects of cue and outcome competition more directly in the ambiguity context.30th International Scientific Conference Empirical Studies in Psychology March 22 – 24, 2024 Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrad

Mass Flights of Slaves in Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War

Fleeing is the most common and well-documented type of slave resistance in ancient Greece. The frequency and magnitude of this social phenomenon naturally increased during times of instability, crisis or armed conflict. Therefore it is hardly surprising that our main narrative source for the history of Greece in the later 5th century BC, the monumental History of the Peloponnesian War by Thucydides, mentions several such episodes. Now, the Athenian historian obviously did not view the fleeing of slaves as events of the highest significance, events that would warrant mention on their own, let alone a lengthy discussion. Instead, every such episode is given in passing, as a part of some wider-reaching, more important affair

Life cycles of Early and Late Neolithic pottery in the Central Balkans: Use and secondary use vs. typology

    No full text
In the Central Balkans, the Early Neolithic is characterized by the Starčevo culture, which emerged around 6200 BC. The subsequent Vinča culture followed around 5300 BC and persisted until 4600/4500 BC, marking the transition into the Late Neolithic. Over recent decades, a large number of Early and Late Neolithic sites have been excavated, yielding extensive collections of pottery that have been repeatedly examined through various theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches. This paper highlights the results of a focused evaluation of pottery from several key Neolithic sites in the region, prioritizing a life-cycle analysis of ceramic vessels and offering detailed insights into the various stages of their biographies, particularly their use, reuse, and recycling practices
