Kad škola radi bim bam bam: Podrška socioemocionalnom učenju učenika

    No full text

When Our History Meets Their History: Strategies Young People in Serbia Use to Coordinate Conflicting Group Narratives

    No full text
When a multiethnic state, such as the former Yugoslavia, dissolves in a violent ethnic-based conflict, new generations grow up on one-sided historical narratives. While there is plenty of evidence of how appropriating such narratives delegitimizes outgroups, studies on how young people coordinate diverse group narratives are lacking. To address this issue, we explored promotive strategies young majority group members use in building a more inclusive historical understanding of two conflicting (majority and minority) narratives. The sample consisted of ten pairs of ethnic Serb high school seniors with a task to jointly build one common narrative out of two one-sided narratives adapted from post-conflict textbooks of majority (Serb) and minority (Bosniak) ethnic groups. We used step-by-step dialogical analysis of semantic promoters in participants' interactions to capture how ingroup and outgroup perspectives are collaboratively positioned. Our results suggest participants use various cognitive, affective, identity and value-based strategies to coordinate conflicting perspectives. The identified promotive strategies can help in developing evidence-based educational materials and teaching environments, especially in post-conflict and divided societies

    No full text

"Silence of the labs" - how widespread is support for replicating ethically controversial psychological studies and is it higher in people with scientistic beliefs

    No full text
Uncritical trust in science and scientists may potentially weaken people’s ability to weigh the costs and benefits of scientific research, biasing them towards accepting greater costs in the name of scientific progress. Based on this assumption, we tested if people with stronger scientistic beliefs also have more positive attitudes towards ethically controversial experiments. Participants (N = 205 psychology students, women 171, Mage=20.92, SDage=3.45; N = 217 online community members, 142 women, Mage =39.13, SDage =11.79) evaluated the need for replication of three seminal psychological studies: Milgram's obedience to authority, Watson and Reiner's emotional conditioning (Little Albert), and Seligman's learned helplessness experiment. They rated their justification and usefulness, if they would grant them ethical permission, and willingness to participate in replications, each by using a 5-point Likert scale. Results showed psychology students were least negative towards replicating Milgram's experiment, with 41.5% deeming it justified, 44.9% finding it useful, 35.1% willing to grant ethical permission, and 21.5% willing to participate. They were most negative towards Little Albert's experiment, with only 13.7% deeming it justified, 30.7% finding it useful, 4.4% willing to grant ethical permission, and 3.4% to participate in it. Online community members were even less critical of these studies: 52.5% deemed Milgram's experiment as justified, 60.4% found it useful, 51.2% were willing to grant ethical permission, and 41% were willing to participate. However, they shared a similarly negative attitude towards the “Little Albert” experiment, with only 14.7% deeming it justified, 22.7% finding it useful, 11.5% willing to grant ethical permission, and 9.2% to participate in it. Unexpectedly, scientistic beliefs did not significantly correlate with attitudes toward replication in either sample. This could be because general social attitudes or personality traits (e.g. social dominance orientation, dark tetrad) rather than beliefs about science, shape attitudes towards ethically controversial experiments, but it could also be that scientistic beliefs are more related to natural sciences, and the effect would be observed for experiments in that domain.International Scientific Psychology Conference - 24th Psychology Days, 23.-25.May 202

Several types of manna and their use in the writings of the Hilandar medical codex

    No full text
The subject of the paper is medicinal types of manna in the form of saccharine exudates of various types of trees, which appear in the writings of the Old Serbian medical codex known as the Hilandar Medical Codex No. 517 (mid-16th century). Medicinal types of manna primarily appear in the writings from the Canon of Medicine, the work of the famous Persian physician Avicenna (980–1037). These treatises were translated into Old Serbian through a Latin translation of the Canon, which was created at the end of the 12th century in Toledo, by Gerard of Cremona. Some types of manna are also present in the List of Simple Remedies of the HMC, which represents a translation of the Circa Instans, the famous pharmacopoeia of the Salerno school from the second half of the 12th century. The paper identifies and presents all types of manna found in the texts of the HMC, including their application within therapies for various diseases. Their properties and characteristics are indicated following the understanding of medicine at that time, alongside attention given to remedies that appear combined with manna

Comparing citizenship competence assessment frameworks: similarities and distinctions in Serbia's educational context

    No full text
Citizenship competence has gained priority status on the education policy agendas in Europe over the past three decades. The two most influential operationalizations of citizenship competence are the International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS) by the IEA and the more recent PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) Global Competence by the OECD. While both frameworks focus on students’ global and civic participation, ICCS emphasizes national and international civic knowledge and engagement, whereas PISA targets intercultural understanding and critical engagement with global issues. The complementarity of these operationalizations has been underresearched. Therefore, we aimed to test the complementarity of ICCS items and PISA Global Competence items. More precisely, we explored whether citizenship education items used in the two international studies measure the same dimension and, if so, whether they measure the same or different levels of the dimension. We set our study in the educational context of Serbia, in which citizenship education has existed as an elective course once per week since 2001. In the most recent ICCS and PISA cycles, students in Serbia were significantly below the overall average on citizenship and global competence. Our sample comprised 620 students from Belgrade general and vocational high schools (aged 16-18). We selected 23 PISA 2018 items and 24 ICCS 2009, 2016, and 2022 items targeting more complex cognitive processes like reasoning and applying. The results confirmed both our hypotheses. Not only did citizenship competence items from ICCS and PISA studies measure one dimension, but they also measured the same levels of the common dimension. Our findings provide further evidence for the factor and convergent validity of the citizenship competence construct and complement other studies showing the measurement invariance of ICCS items. In this paper, we discuss how citizenship competence measured within these assessment frameworks relates to citizenship education aims and the actual school practice

Assessing Personality Pathology in Adolescence: Integrating Expert Opinion, Self-Report, and Subjective Experiences in a Serbian Cohort

    No full text
In recent years, adolescent mental health has emerged as a significant public concern in Serbia, prompting efforts to improve access to psychological support and professional training in the field. Despite these strides, the challenge of addressing personality pathology among adolescents persists. There is no standardized protocol for assessment and treatment of personality disorders in adolescence, and those with personality disorder features are generally seen as ineligible for diagnosis prior to adulthood. 113 Moreover, empirical data on this issue are notably absent within the Serbian context. This study protocol outlines an exploratory research project on the topic, consisting of three studies. The primary objective of Study 1 is to investigate the attitudes and experiences of child/adolescent mental health experts on early diagnosis and treatment of personality disorders. Data will be gathered from approximately 10 participants via a semi-structured interview specifically designed for the study. Study 2 will consist of Serbian translation, modification and validation of a self-report measure Levels of Personality Functioning Questionnaire (LoPF-Q 12-18). Sample will include participants aged 12 to 18 from general population (N=300) and those in current inpatient/outpatient psychiatric treatment (N=60). The aim of Study 3 is to explore subjective experiences of identity, object relations and affect regulation of adolescents with highest and lowest levels of personality functioning, based on LoPF-Q 12-18 scores from Study 2. Data will be collected from 50 participants using the Interview of Personality Organization Processes in Adolescence (IPOP-A). This research project represents a comprehensive effort to address the pressing issue of adolescent personality pathology within the Serbian context. By exploring expert perspectives, validating assessment tools, and delving into the subjective experiences of adolescents, it aims to contribute valuable insights on the current practice and improve early detection of personality disorders, ultimately fostering better mental health outcomes for this vulnerable population in Serbia

Evaluation of community-based mental health support to long-term psychiatric users: a qualitative study

    No full text
Although many advances are made at the level of national mental health strategies and policies that advocate for the transition from predominantly in-patient treatment to the establishment of community-based services in line with a recovery model approach, Serbian mental health care system is still focused on the medical model, hospital-based treatment and the provision of pharmacotherapy. Availability of outpatient and community-based care is very limited, and there is a lack of empirical evaluation of existing programs and services. Our study aimed at assessing experiences, (unmet) needs, resources and challenges of people with severe mental health disorders that are both long-term psychiatric users and users of the community-based mental health services in order to support the development of these services tailored to their needs and the specificities of the local context. We performed semi-structured interviews with 11 participants recruited from a community-based center for psychosocial support in Belgrade (9m and 2f), aged 26-65 (M = 48.5), diagnosed with a psychotic disorder, and using psychiatric services for decades (11-57 years). Interviews were transcribed and analyzed relying on the principles of thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006). Findings indicate that existing community-based mental health services contribute to the wellbeing and quality of life of psychiatric users by: a) providing meaning and structure through creative and occupational activities; b) enabling lasting relationships and continuous support, especially with peers; and c) helping them establish and maintain control over their functioning and affirm their sense of agency through active engagement in the programs. The most relevant unmet needs identified point to possible direction of improvement of existing services: a) enabling a greater continuity and availability of support, especially peer support, by establishing and sustaining community mental-health centres open to psychiatric users; b) offering more diversified and individualized psychological support services; c) providing support in solving practical, work and financial difficulties by offering multi-sector services.30th Scientific Conference “Empirical Studies in Psychology”, March 22–24, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, Serbia-Abstract

The subject lexicographic monograph is the result of work on the first project task within the SPATTERN project. This outcome is, by its nature, a scientific-lexicographic publication, specifically a dictionary accompanied by methodological explanations at the intersection of urban morphology and digital technologies. The publication comprises 30 terms grouped into 4 clusters, curated by a multidisciplinary team of 11 researchers from the University of Belgrade - Faculty of Architecture, Faculty of Organizational Sciences, and Faculty of Philosophy. The publication represents the first comprehensive dictionary in this field, which simultaneously presents and defines 4 groups of terms and establishes relationships between them

Into the Woods: Wild Animals and Hunting in Medieval Serbian Lands

    No full text
During the Middle Ages (between the 12–15th c. AD) hunting was a privilege and a necessity. In medieval society, this activity was an obligation of the lower class and the main form of entertainment for noblemen, but also an opportunity for practicing and staying in shape during times of peace, which provided rich feasts as well. According to historical records, Serbia abounded with forests and numerous wild animal species. Therefore, hunting was very important throughout the Middle Ages and has not lost its significance for centuries. Evidence of hunting and the presence of some wild animals in Serbia was preserved in different historical records – written sources, fresco paintings, tombstone representations, etc. In addition, archaeological finds made from game bones and faunal assemblages from different sites complete the picture of the importance of wild animals. This paper summarises information gathered from different historical records, iconographic representations, and the results of zooarchaeological analyses to provide insight into hunting practices and the crucial role played by wild animals in medieval Serbia
