Obrovčine in Ratkovača–Lug, Near Dublje (Bogatić), an Obrovac-Type of Site – Stratigraphy, Chronology, and Environment
The archaeological site of Obrovčine in Ratkovača–Lug is located in the
Mačva region in Western Serbia. These two small mounds are encircled by two
trenches, where a small settlement was founded in the late 5th millennium BC.
They were first discovered over 50 years ago, with excavations of a 4 x 4m trench
in 1971. Data from those excavations are limited. According to their type and
layout, the sites were described as “Obrovac-type” of sites, typically dated to
the Late Neolithic and Early Eneolithic, characteristic for western Serbia. Over
the past decade, the site was revisited, surveyed, and geoarchaeological coring,
geophysical prospection, and excavations took place within the project “Life in
wetlands”. The aim of this project is to examine the occurrence of Obrovac-type
of sites using a multidisciplinary approach. This paper presents new results that
originated from the excavations of these two mounds, labelled Obrovčine 1 and
Obrovčine 2 in Ratkovača–Lug.
At Obrovčine 1, a test-trench (size: 2 x 2 m) was located in north-western part of the mound, with a diameter of ca. 30 m. The position of the trench
was influenced by the vegetation covering the mound, whereas areas with wood
cover or large roots were avoided. Parallel to the excavations, a coring campaign
was conducted. The trench showed remains of several archaeological structures,
which were, unfortunately, only partially located within the trench. Two of them
represent postholes, reaching the depths of 0.9 m and 0.95 m, respectively. Cores
around the mound indicated several heavily burned daub structures, whereas only
their borders were explored in the area within the trench.
Obrovčine 2 was located to the north-east of the site of Obrovčine 1, on
the other side of the dried-out river channel (now an irrigational channel), some
20 m away. The site underwent certain modifications in recent times, due to its
position on an agricultural plot, where extensive land use and ploughing have
damaged the site. Geoarchaeological coring indicated a trench surrounding the
mound, at least to the north and to the east, as well as burned daub remains, while
geomagnetic survey indicated at least two burned structures. One of these burned
structures was excavated in a 2 x 3 m trench. The excavations revealed a burned
building with at least three superimposed floors, where the lower two were heavily burned, and the most recent, third one, was the thinnest and least preserved.
On the most recent floor, a compact layer of ash was recorded. It was 7–8 cm
thick, covering an area of ca. 0.7 m by 0.7 m. It was brought into connection with
the damaged remains of an oven. The building was not fully excavated, and it
was damaged by a later ditch, excavated through it. Two absolute dates are available from this building: 4331–4059 cal BC (95.4% probability) and 4329–4249
calBC (95.4% probability). Limited number of artefacts, in combination with the
absolute dates obtained, could chronologically determine this site as belonging to
the Early Eneolithic Bubanj culture. A small number of plant and animal remains
was retrieved from the site, but only couple of them that could be identified, such
as reed (Phragmites communis, 4 fragments), Sus domesticus (3 fragments), Sus
scrofa (1 fragment), and Bos sp. (1 fragment).
Restoration of building floors that burned down could indicate longer
or numerous episodes of use and occupation of the site. Very few and relatively
similar remains of material culture indicate a limited type of activities that took
place on the site. These would suggest a potential abandonment and return to the
site, possibly as part of seasonal activities. Absolute dates correspond well to
several other Obrovac-type of sites that were dated into the late 5th millennium
BC according to some chronologically sensitive artefacts that were recovered
From evidence lacking beliefs to evidence lacking practices - irrationality and traditional complementary/alternative medicine use.
Medical practices that fall outside of conventional medicine are usually referred to as
traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine (TCAM). Although TCAM may offer
certain health benefits, its use may have adverse effects, or be contraindicated with
certain conditions or prescribed therapy. This, and the fact that TCAM is increasingly
being used despite a lack of evidence of its efficacy, calls for further investigation to map
who finds these practices especially appealing. As research suggests that specific
irrational beliefs could be relevant for susceptibility to TCAM use, we opted to include a
broader set of irrational beliefs in a single design and test their validity in explaining
TCAM use. We did that across four samples: a community sample from Serbia (N1=575);
a community sample from Bosnia and Heržegovina (N2=561); a quota sample from
Serbia (N3=224); and a representative sample from Serbia (N4=1003). TCAM use was
measured using a 22-item checklist that included practices based on natural products
(e.g., herbal teas, balms, honeybee products), alternative medical systems (e.g.,
acupuncture, homeopathy), New Age medicine (e.g., yoga, meditation, mindfulness) and
rituals/customs (e.g., wearing amulets, drinking water from healing springs). For
irrational beliefs, we assessed superstition, general conspiratorial, and magical health
beliefs in all samples. We added medical conspiratorial beliefs in Samples 2-4, and
extrasensory perception beliefs for sample 4. The results of the regression analyses
demonstrated that irrational beliefs explain between 8.7% (Sample 4) and 23.3%
(Sample 3) of TCAM use across the four samples. While magical health beliefs and
superstition were the best predictors of TCAM use in Studies 1-3 (their predictiveness
varied between .17 and .28), in Study 4 extrasensory perception beliefs and medical
conspiratorial beliefs had the highest predictive power (predictiveness .26 and .07
respectively). Although specific predictors differed to some extent between the samples,
the overall pattern of results was consistent and emphasižed the important role of
irrational beliefs in TCAM use
Contract on Lease of the Jewish Inn in Sombor from 1821
In the early 19th century, although the Jewish community in Sombor had
barely two hundred members, its merchant activities were intensive. For all
Jewish merchants coming to Sombor, the Jewish Inn was the key institution
where they could stay while working in Sombor. The right to lease the Jewish
Inn was one of the privileges enjoyed by Sombor residents. This right was
realised at a public auction and awarded to whoever offered the highest amount
for the annual lease. The tenant signed a contract with the city, specifying
the obligations and rights of both parties. The appendix of the paper gives
an example of the contract signed between the city of Sombor and Lazar
Rosenzvaig to lease the Inn from November 1821. Other contracts drawn up
for this purpose have a similar content. The right to lease the Inn was the
cause of many disputes and disagreements among the members of the Jewish
community in Sombor. Based on an insight into the documents related to the
activities of the Jewish community of Sombor in the early 19th century, the
dispute regarding the lease of the Inn was one of the most significant and
protracted legal issues in Sombor in the first two decades of the 19th century
among the members of this community
Slavonia in the Works of English and British Travellers from the Middle Ages to the Modern Times
Svetoj Zemlji, Osmanskom carstvu, kroz Mađarsku, Austriju i Nemačku. Narativna slika
The paper observes the way in which English and British travellers saw and described
Sclavonia and Slavonia in the period from the fifteenth to the nineteenth century. The
way in which they constructed the image of Slavonia will be explored in the paper
through the presentation of their observations on various elements of this area. In
this way, one can notice how the narrative image of Slavonia changed in the period of
three centuries travel literature, as well as the character of the journey itself changed
with the visitor - whether they visited it for just a few hours or days on a diplomatic
mission or had a desire to learn more about the area they wrote about during their
journey to the Holy Land, the Ottoman Empire, Hungary, Austria or Germany. The
narrative image of Slavonia in the reports of travellers also depends on the means of
travel available to them - by land or by boat on the Danube or the Adriatic Sea. The
narrative image of Slavonia was subject to changes in the period of several centuries,
and the pace of the dynamics of change depended primarily on the pace of travel and
technical possibilities that modernization has given rise to in this period. Having all
this in mind, I would like to emphasize that the paper observes the English and the
British perception of Sclavonia, at first, and later the notion of Slavonia, and not actual
changes in the notion and scope of this area during the historical period in question
The spreading of homophobia as a contagion: Critical analysis of the homophobic discourse on the monkeypox epidemic in Serbia in 2022 through the prism of glocality
S druge strane, diskurs o MB-u preuzima specifičnu glokalnu formu u susretanju preovlađujuće homofobije lokalnog srpskog društva na poluperiferiji svetskog kapitalizma i dve globalne pojave – epidemije majmunskih boginja i manifestacije Evroprajda u Beogradu 2022. godine. Drugi deo nastoji da utvrdi aktersku (odozdo) perspektivu analizom komentara dela javnosti na objavama društvenih mreža koje su tematizovale Evroprajd kao pretnju širenja MB-a.Shortly after the revelation of the spread of monkeypox (MB), both in developed Western societies and in Serbia, discourses of homophobia appeared in texts published on the portals of domestic e-newspapers, as well as in public reactions on social networks. The subject of this paper is the discourse of contagion of monkeypox, which manifested itself as a (relatively) new form of discursive embodiment of homophobia in Serbian society. We will try to show that the homophobic discourse of contagion, on the one hand, has a long history in the societies of the center of world capitalism (labeling gay men as carriers of infectious diseases), since the whole situation is irresistibly reminiscent of the moral (sexual) panic related to the emergence of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 1980s, as well as other infectious diseases. On the other hand, the discourse on MB takes a specific glocal form in meeting the prevailing homophobia of the local Serbian society on the semi-periphery of world capitalism with two global phenomena – the monkeypox epidemic and the manifestation of Europride in Belgrade in 2022. More precisely, the discourse of contagion of MB is manifested in the claim that gay men are the source of the MB epidemic, which threatens to culminate during Europride and thus represents a danger for the Serbian nation. Finally, we will offer a reconceptualization of the Western-centric notion of homonationalism, which is a concept in social theory that tries to explain homophobia, and which must be replaced with the notion of heteronationalism, more adequate for understanding the hegemonic anti-gay rhetoric typical for Eastern European societies. Empirical data which will be collected with critical discourse analysis in this study consists of two parts. The first part tries to map the structural (top-down) aspect of this phenomenon, by analyzing the articles of the online version of the domestic media, which constructed the MB epidemic as a “gay contagion”. The second part tries to determine the actor’s (bottom-up) perspective, by analyzing the comments within a section of the public on social media posts that thematized Europride as a threat of spreading the MB.Naučna konferencija "Neizbežnost interkulturalnosti", Filozofski fakultet Univerziteta u Beogradu 13. i 14. oktobra 2023., Beogra
Towards an Effective Digital Education: Addressing Users’ Dispositions to Share Epistemically Toxic Content
Web-based information and communication channels are seen as
environments that facilitate the perpetuation and diffusion of ‘epis
temically toxic content’ (a phrase borrowed from Record and Miller,
2022), leading to potentially deleterious societal consequences. Two
types of solutions are proposed to mitigate these problems: structural
and educational. Proponents of structural interventions (SI) argue for
a variety of changes at the level of the digital environment, such as
nudging (Thornhill 2019), top-down control (Millar 2019), and oth
ers. Proponents of the educational approach (EA) argue that a lack
of digital literacy renders users more susceptible to adopting unreli
able content. They advocate for the careful development of strategies
aimed at identifying content that undermines their epistemic practic
es (e.g., Pollizzi and Taylor 2019; Guess et al. 2020).
What we aim to show is that both approaches tend to see internet
users as overly passive receivers of information who need external
guidance to make well-informed decisions. Our goal is to demon
strate that responsible engagement with online information should
also consider the active role of internet users, particularly their pro
pensity to create and share unreliable content online. With that said,
we propose strategies that include developing the abilities of internet
users to minimize negative factors that undermine the reliable use of
information channels and to ensure the responsible use of their com
municative aspects. The paper concludes with suggestions for culti
vating these skills and proposes further research as the foundation for
building comprehensive education strategies.Balkan Analytic Forum 2: Dispositions & Dispositions and Values International Conference, 10–20. October 2024. Belgrade
Early hunter-gatherer settlements and the emergence of agricultural villages in the Near East: a brief overview of Neolithic cultures
The paper presents a brief introduction to the Natufian culture as the beginning of the sedentary life of anatomically modern humans, and then presents the Early
Neolithic and Neolithic cultures and the main sites in the Middle East with a focus on
the Levant and Mesopotamia. The first goal of the paper is to point out the cultural
development after the transition to a sedentary lifestyle, which includes art, religion,
rituals, economy, architecture and settlement construction, as well as social relations.
The paper presents cultural changes chronologically and their impact on social changes
in communities. Accordingly, the paper presents the basic cultural elements and technological inventions and social changes using examples from some of the main and
most significant sites in the Middle East. The final goal of the paper is to present how
cultural innovations such as agriculture and further cultural evolution in prehistory, as
well as migrations, led to the creation of the first cities, and above all the first large city
of Uruk, which became the forerunner of the Sumerian civilization

The Wounded Body of the Bridegroom: Love, Violence, and the Song of Songs at the Dawn of the Early Modern Period
The paper examines the role of two miniatures depicting violence against the body of Christ within the context of love mysticism. They are based on the notion of bride and bridegroom from the Song of Songs, creatively reinterpreted to stir up the devotion of their owners. The first illumination comes from the Rothschild Canticles, a collection of biblical songs created in the early 14th century for an anonymous nun or canoness. It portrays the nun’s soul piercing Christ’s side wound. The second miniature belongs to the visual narrative of Henry Suso's Horologium Sapientiae from the 15th-century manuscript in the Royal Library of Belgium (MS IV 111). It depicts a dialog between Dame Sapientia (Christ’s divine nature) and the Disciple (the main character with whom the reader was supposed to identify). The composition includes two parables and the lady’s “most loving form” – a vision of Christ who is tortured while carrying his cross. It is argued that both examples were carefully devised to evoke Eucharistic allusions as a framework for the consummation of love.
In the Rothschild Canticles, the path toward intimate union with the divine bridegroom begins with an act of love violence – the phallic penetration of Christ’s side by the spear. The act is equated with the ritual performance of the celebrant priest in the Mass, ascribing the priestly role to the female soul. The erotic allusion achieves its full significance in the Eucharistic interpretation, as the desire for the loved one is fulfilled only through the real presence of Christ, realized through transubstantiation.
In the case of the miniature from Horologium Sapientiae, the vision of Christ’s torments is depicted anachronistically – his body bears the wounds of the crucifixion while enduring what preceded it. Therefore, the intention behind the image was to depict Eucharistic reality, which undermines chronological order: a sublimation of time and space, where the ultimate expression of divine love (Christ’s sacrifice) is reaffirmed ever again at Mass. Because the narrative of Suso’s work reveals that the Disciple is repulsed by Christ's disfigured body, the illumination suggests that unless the Disciple overcomes this aversion, he will reject the real presence of the beloved and the consummation of their love through communion.
Horologium Sapientiae
Work of Painter Janja Moler in the Principality of Serbia
Jovan Stergević, better known as Janja Moler, was one of the most
productive painters of the Principality of Serbia during the first half of
the 19th century. Vlach by birth (Tzintzar), he came to the Principality of
Serbia from Macedonia in the beginning of the third decade of the 19th
century and settled in Kragujevac, the Serbian capital at that time, with a
family and a group of painters. Due to the high appreciation by Prince Miloš
Obrenovič, since his arrival in Serbia, he has engaged, on Prince’s behalf
in various painting jobs, and has become well accepted among the founders
and contributors from various social circles, which has enabled him to paint
a large number of iconostasis and individual icons. There is an extensive
oeuvre of his works, which includes about thirty iconostasis, ten individual
icons and three epithaphios. His works were characterized by a recognizable
painting manner. It consists of retrospect, the use of graphic templates and
old iconographic solutions, the abundant use of gold, as well as the specific
color, and especially the physiognomy of saintly figures. In the environment
in which Janja grew up, not only he learned the art of icon painting, but
also the practical skill of limiting and running a workshop, with the help
of which he was able to realize a relatively fast painting of a large number
of icons and iconostasis. Although we do not have complete information
about the members of Janja Moler’s painting group, except for his sons
and a couple of co-workers who has signed their works, it is evident that
it had a great success on the art market of the Principality of Serbia during
the first half of the 19th century. The artistic circle surrounding Janja Moler
nourished a recognizable expression and the same iconographic template,
which is confirmed by the independent achievements of the painter, can be
reliably linked to this workshop. The fact that they received orders even
after Janja’s death shows that their work deep in the sixth decade of the
19th century was still accepted by many patrons of church painting, as well
as that Janja was outlived by his reputation as a painter
