“If not a musician–then what?”: Identity development in musically gifted radical accelerands
Background
Our narrative identities are complex cognitive constructs consisting of internalized, integrative accounts of past, present, and future critical life events (McAdams, 1996). By narrating these critical events and the transitions between them, individuals establish a sense of continuity between past and future selves (Ibarra & Barluescu, 2010). Previous research (Jovanović et al., in press) suggests that, in the lives of gifted musicians, radical acceleration is one of these critical events.
Aims
We aimed at understanding the identity construction in exceptionally musically gifted individuals and the role of radical acceleration in that process.
Method
In online narrative interviews (Spector-Mersel, 2011), four accomplished classical musicians who experienced radical acceleration in their music education shared their life stories. Applying Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (Smith & Osborn, 2003) we identified six life chapters (LC) and appurtenant themes.
Results
Participants’ life stories begin in musically rich family environments (LC1), and with early recognition of their musical gift. Guided by family and/or competent music teachers, and their own passion for playing (LC2), they have subordinated all other activities to practicing music, and practice has led to immense progress in musical skill; high accomplishments followed and gave rise to a positive musical self-concept. Entering university at the age of 14-15 (LC3), starting a professional music life and having great musical achievements, their musical identity grew stable, but wasn’t questioned. After graduating (LC4), the rise of new professional and private roles changed the way they perceive themselves. At the onset of early adulthood (LC5), the highly developed solo-performer identity sparked anxiety and uncertainty when thinking about professional risks coupled with limited career options. Looking back (LC6), they embrace the positive consequences of acceleration, while realizing its negative sides, too, like having no time to ask oneself: If not a musician, what would/could I be?
Conclusions
The life stories of exceptionally gifted musicians indicate that acceleration has substantially shaped who they are, not only as musicians, but that it has had a pervasive impact on their identities in other areas of life as well.

47. Something's fishy: the role of the Danube fish in the diet of the soldiers from the Roman military camp Diana – Karataš
The site of Diana – Karataš is a Roman period auxiliary fort that was once a part of the
Roman Limes on the Danube. It is located at the very end of the Iron Gates – a 134 km long
narrow Danube Gorge in today’s eastern Serbia. Here, a large fortification that could hold
around 500 soldiers was erected in the I century AD and lasted until the middle of the V
century. Due to its location, it was logical to assume that the diet of the soldiers stationed
here was supplemented to a significant extent by hunting, and especially by fishing,
bearing in mind the proximity of the Danube. An analysis of animal remains from the site
has been conducted in the last couple of years, indeed yielded a large amount of fish
remains, even though all of the material was hand-collected some 40 years ago. Here, we
will give a deeper insight into the significance and role of fish in the diet of the Roman
soldiers at the distant frontier, by looking at the contextual data, taxonomic composition,
taphonomic data, consumption patterns and biometry of fish remains. Special attention
will be given to the beluga sturgeon – the largest and the most valued species.ICAZ – 4th Roman Period Working Group: Social archaeozoology and role of animals in Roman period societies: social differences, the impact of Rome on animal-human relationships, and changes in the human diet, 09 – 12th April 2024, Belgrad
Anthropological analysis of the quality of life of older members of society in conditions of increased stress caused by the COVID-19 pandemic
The qualitative anthropological research, which started during the state of
emergency 2020 in the Republic of Serbia and will continue until the end of
the pandemic COVID -19, is focused on the oldest members of society, who
are assessed as the most vulnerable in the newly created circumstances, both in
the media discourse and in the sphere of decision makers. This assessment was
primarily related to health aspects, but also had multiple social implications,
as the Covid-19 threat to the health of the individual and even the entire health
system was transformed into total isolation because of a 24-h curfew for all those
over 65 years of age. The initial reaction to the crisis in Serbian society, as well as
the later stages, which differ significantly, have created a social environment in
which all kinds of problems related to the quality of life in old age have intensified,
with losses in terms of the functioning of the interlocutor in everyday life: from
the possibility and right to be mobile, to the reduction of social contacts, the right
to make decisions, to the unavailability of medical care or its postponement to an uncertain future. In these circumstances, an increase in stress-inducing factors
and their intensity was noted, resulting in a more marked deterioration in quality
of life than would be expected at this stage of life. Particular attention was paid to
the post-pandemic period in order to understand the observed consequences as
those that could be used to prevent potential crises in the future.Nacionalni naučni skup Postepidemiološki stres: Istorijske i

Practice of European CBT psychotherapists with LGBT clients
The aim of this study was to see how well are CBT psychotherapists informed about issues of LGBT population and to investigate if they feel comfortable treating these clients. The second aim was to examine attitudes towards this population and how they are affecting psychotherapy practice. We also gave respondents 4 vignettes to determine if the therapist was doing something wrong in hypothetical cases when working with LGBT clients. The four issues were assuming heterosexuality of the client, assuming sexual orientation was the cause of client’s depression, assuming that a bisexual person is actually gay and spending multiple sessions in which the client educates the therapist about transgender issues. Research was done on a sample of 101 therapists and psychotherapy trainees (83% of which identify as heterosexual). Results show that 63% of respondents have experience in working with this population and that 98% would accept working with these clients. The respondents seem interested in problems of LGBT clients but a third of them say that in reality they are little informed about their issues. The biggest hurdles they see in this work are anxiety about saying the wrong thing, inexperience and overcoming unintended micro-prejudice. For all of the vignettes the participants mostly agreed that the therapists made a mistake
Kuhn, Fleck and Archaeological Evidence: An Omnivorous Strategy to Study the History of Archaeology
The majority of the current histories on the social facets of scientific work rely theoretically on Kuhn’s The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, whose ‘paradigm’ has since become limited due to a rethinking of the epistemology of knowledge creation. Accordingly, Ludwik Fleck, whose notions allow for better micro-historiographies to surface as a supplement to the paradigm, have come to the fore with their applicability stemming from his The Genesis and Development of Scientific Fact. A hybrid omnivore strategy between them may be further supplemented by the contemporary philosophy of science of evidential reasoning in archaeology.
Applying this theoretical background, specific attention in this paper is paid to the archaeology of the former Yugoslavia, in which a monumental shift occurred. Prior to World War II, it consisted of lone individuals; however, with the introduction of a culture-historical approach, considerable growth occurred in archaeology after World War II, emerging as an emancipatory force in the service of ideology. Through an omnivore perspective, an examination of the archaeology of the former Yugoslavia presents a broader picture of the mechanisms of scientific development
Workshops on digital epigraphy and storytelling within the project PROMETHEUS
The EU co-founded project PROMETHEUS – Promoting Universal Values through Digital Epigraphy and Cultural Heritage is a collaborative initiative involving educational and research institutions aimed at integrating successful digital epigraphy practices with teaching methodologies. The project’s primary goal is to create a thematic digital resources and a storytelling platform that uses narrative elements to contextualize and present the contents of epigraphic monuments, making them more accessible and engaging for a broader, non-expert audience. The aim is to foster appreciation for the historical and cultural narratives preserved within these epigraphic monuments and the universal values they address
Is there a different role of emotional valence for concrete and abstract words
The concreteness effect denotes the advantage of concrete words over abstract words in
various tasks (Kousta et al., 2011; Paivio et al., 1966). One explanation for such a phenomenon
comes from the Dual coding theory according to which the verbal representation of concrete
words is enriched by perceptual information acquired through sensory experience with the
objects they denote (Paivio, 1991; Sadoski & Paivio, 2004). However, when controlling for
imageability and context availability, in a lexical decision task, Kousta et al. (2011) found
recognition to be faster and more accurate for abstract compared to concrete words, naming
it the abstractness effect. The advantage of abstract words was linked to their emotional
valence, i.e. the experience of bodily sensations related to emotions. To contribute to the
concreteness/abstractness effect debate (Paivio, 2013; Vigliocco et al., 2013), and investigate
the abstractness effect further, we presented a paired associate learning task to first-year
psychology students from the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade (N = 104) (Paivio,
Yuille, & Smythe, 1966). Sixty pairs of words were presented visually in a random order.
Participants were instructed to read the words carefully. After that, participants were engaged
in the cued recall, immediately upon the presentation and one week later. The stimuli were
abstract and concrete words. Within each group, there were positively, neutrally, or negatively
valenced words. The six groups of words were matched for imageability, context availability,
familiarity, arousal, age of acquisition, (log) lemma frequency, word length and association
rating within word pairs. In both testing conditions (immediately and one week later) a general
mixed-effects linear regression analysis of the binominal distribution of responses showed no
significant differences among the groups except for one: cued recall was significantly lower for
the negatively valenced abstract words. Based on these results it seems that emotional
valence is more relevant for abstract words as suggested by Kousta et al. (2011). To bolster
these results, and to make them more comparable to the original study by Kousta et al. (2011),
we are in the process of data collection for a lexical decision task with the same stimuli.International Word Processing Conference, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, Serbia, July 4th – 6th, 202
