Protecting the right to an open future through a balance between breadth and depth of education
Prezentacija razmatra kako rana specijalizacija u obrazovanju, od elitnog sporta
do stručnog obučavanja, može ugroziti autonomiju deteta u budućnosti
zatvaranjem alternativnih profesionalnih puteva i načina života.
his presentation examines how early specialization in education, from elite
sports to vocational training, can threaten a child's future autonomy by
foreclosing alternative vocational pathways and lifestyles. It frames this issue
through Joel Feinberg's concept of the "right to an open future," which argues
children must be protected from autonomy diminishing influences until they can
make free choices. This right suggests education should provide broad, impartial
exposure to different vocations and lifestyles to maximize future options. The
presentation then addresses Claudia Mills' critique that a right to an open future
leads to a superficial "shopping around" experience in education, preventing the
deep engagement required for genuine understanding and personal growth. The
presentation proposes a reconciliation between these two positions. First, schools
should act correctively by focusing curriculum on minority lifestyles, as children
are already overexposed to dominant ones at home. This ensures they encounter
challenging perspectives. Second, the presentation introduces the "proper bitesize" policy. For any subject, educators should identify a minimal yet meaningful
unit of experience - a "bite", that is substantial enough to be representative and
meaningful without being so long it monopolizes time and resources for learning.
This approach aims to balance the need for breadth and depth of learning, thus
protecting the child's right to an open future.Naučni skup Moralna odgovornost i problemi savremenog društva III „Odgovornost i rasuđivanje: epistemički, moralni i društveni aspekti”, Beograd, 28. novembra 2025. - Saopštenje štampano u izvod
Preliminary Results of Investigations of Remesiana, Eastern Necropolis (Campaign 2023)
Thirteen burials were discovered in the research campaign of 2023, and 12 of them were fully
investigated. The burials contained nine adults and three children, most of them buried
within simple pits, while the usage of bricks was detected in only two cases. Also, one more
funerary object with a horseshoe-shaped base has been discovered (Object no. 7). The object
is partially damaged, probably by later burials, hence, most of the eastern wall and NE corner
were missing. No skeletal remains have been found in the grave within the construction (G56),
and the grave was probably reused during the Antiquity. The situation at the field indicates
the possibility that the original grave was opened (remains in the western part), the burial pit
expanded, and a second body placed in the same grave. If that was the case, we can assume
that the skeletal remains disintegrated due to the acidity of the soil.
There was also a case of a (attempted?) grave robbery. The human remains in G61 were
piled up in one end of the grave, and a possible entry pit was also detected immediately next to
the grave. Grave goods, detected in only a small number of graves, consisted of usual items
found all over the necropolis – necklaces made of glass beads, bronze bracelets, and coins.
Among these, a bronze hand distaff was discovered in G59 – the first of its kind at the eastern
necropolis
What is Philosophy for Ksenija Atanasijević?
This chapter provides a general discussion of Ksenija Atanasijević,
widely recognized as a unique 20th-century Serbian philosopher. Her extensive
knowledge of various philosophical fields, including ancient Greek philosophy,
philosophies of the East, as well as Slavic and Serbian practical wisdom, combined
with her critical, systematic, and resourceful mind, made her prominent in Serbian philosophy and culture. Her philosophical development occurred after the
emancipation from the metaphysical thought of Branislav Petronijević, leading her
to focus on more relevant questions grounded in the new tendencies of Slavic philosophy and Serbian culture. The chapter explores the relationship between the
two different philosophical conceptions in her works before World War II. Despite
their differences, I assume that both concepts of philosophy have something in
common. This text particularly highlights Atanasijević’s philosophical fragments
and how, after a significant “turn,” she articulated her own philosophical position
based on ethics. After an overview of the fundamental claims and arguments of
her ethical stance, the chapter provides a critical discussion of them
Seeking Reliability Amidst Uncertainty: The Emergence of a New Political Generation in Serbia
The collapse of the canopy on the newly renovated Novi Sad railway station, which killed 16
people, sparked student protests and blockades lasting over six months. While mass youth protests
in Serbia took place in 1968 and again during the 1990s, this generation has articulated different
demands and embraced new forms of organisation.
This presentation aims to explore the emergence of a new political generation (Mannheim, 1952)
in Serbia and addresses two key questions: What structures them as a political generation? And
why is their response to the social crisis shaped in this particular way? The study draws on
qualitative analysis of 14 semi-structured in-depth interviews with students active in the protests
between February and May 2025.
Findings suggest that the unique socio-historical context has shaped this generation’s distinct
worldview. As the first to grow up under consolidated capitalism on the European periphery, their
outlook reflects global risks: labour flexibility, precarity, and uncertainty in adulthood, alongside
local instability and weak institutions. They also navigate a political environment characterised by
widespread institutional mistrust, low youth participation, and reliance on informal systems,
including clientelism and corruption. Additionally, disillusionment with the West is growing, as
liberal ideology loses appeal, and Western support is perceived as prioritising stability over
democratic development.
This generation’s political response includes: (a) the absence of ideology, with reliability of the
system and its institutions being their primary demand; (b) strong self-reliance and scepticism
toward the international community, especially Western states; and (c) a preference for
participatory decision-making, favouring direct over representative democracyESA RN30 Mid-Term Conference “Youth and Young Adults in a Radically Changing World: Stagnation, Continuation and New Beginnings”, Varaždin, Croatia, October 15–18, 2025.- Saopštenje štampano u izvodu
Strange Smells and Noisy Neighbors: Sensory Encounters Between Hunter-gatherers And Early Farmers
Through the senses, individuals gather information about the external world, both
consciously and unconsciously. Both biological predisposition and cultural influences
shape the process of information processing before a stimulus is even perceived. When
studying sensory perception, we assume similar abilities within the same human or
animal species. In humans, the senses register stimuli at different distances. Vision
detects distant stimuli, and smell and sound work at mid-range, while taste and touch
require direct contact. These stimuli are categorized as familiar or unfamiliar. According
to appraisal theory, a stimulus can be perceived as desirable (useful or pleasant),
dangerous, or irrelevant. This perception triggers a reaction based on personal
experience and cultural codes (such as taboos), leading to avoidance (flight),
confrontation (elimination of the stimulus), or approach. Within this framework, I examine
the Neolithization period from the perspective of Mesolithic communities. Early farming
and herding populations brought new objects and behaviours into Europe, creating a
challenging and unfamiliar sensory environment for local hunter-gatherers. So, were
Neolithic newcomers perceived as "smelly and loud neighbours"? This study explores
interactions between these communities—conflict, coexistence, and passive noninterference—
through the lens of sensory perception. Dynamic models of understanding
and evaluating the sensory world of "others" or "strangers" will be examined using
ethnographic, anthropological, and sociological research on interethnic relations in
contexts of colonization and globalization. The 31th European Association of Archaeologists Annual Meeting (Interwined pasts), Belgrade Virtual, 2-6 September 2025 - Saopštenje štampano u izvod
Factors Influencing the Emergence and Persistence of Workers’ Self-Management: A HistoricalComparative Analysis of Worker-Recuperated Enterprises in Argentina
The primary objective of this paper is to analyze the factors related to the emergence and
sustainability of workers’ self-management as a form of collective action by the working class. The
analysis is set within a comparative framework to establish the deterministic values of different factors. The model of workers’ self-management in the form of “worker recuperated enterprises” (Empresas recuperadas por sus trabajadores – ERT) in Argentina, which emerged during the dramatic economic crisis of the early 2000s, serves as the experiential framework where sustainability factors are analyzed through empirical research. In addition to focusing on “worker recuperated enterprises” in Argentina, the analysis also considers the workers’ self-management model in Yugoslavia. The paper starts with the hypothesis that the sustainability of workers’ self-management is conditioned by a combination of internal and external factors (i.e. factors within and outside of the company). More specifically, it tests the hypothesis that external factors provide the general framework supporting the emergence of workers’ self-management, while its consolidation relies on the constellation of several internal factors. The analysis of workers’ self-management in Yugoslavia and Argentina confirms the hypothesis regarding the factors affecting the establishment and consolidation of workers’ self-management. A comprehensive historical and empirical analysis concludes that external factors establish the general conditions for the emergence of workers’ self-management, while internal factors directly affect its sustainability. In other words, systemic and structural external factors create the potential for workers’ self-management, whereas the interplay between these external factors and internal organizational and activity factors determines its sustainability. Economic, organizational, and value factors are particularly significant among internal factors.
The Balanica Cave Complex (BCC) is situated on the southwestern slopes of the Svrljig Mountains, 17 km east of the city of Niš (southern Serbia) in Sićevo Gorge. Two caves connected by a narrow passageway – Velika and Mala Balanica – constitute the BCC, which was systematically excavated since 2004. The lower lithological beds of both caves are renowned for their pre-Mousterian Middle Palaeolithic archaeological records, which resemble Acheulo-Yabrudian types with characteristic Quina elements. Thermoluminescence (TL) and electron spin resonance (ESR) dating methods coupled with U ratio on flints and mammalian dental enamel reliably restricted the age of these assemblages to late Middle Pleistocene (Chibanian), in the range of MIS 7 to MIS 9. Dental remains from Velika Balanica are consistent with Neanderthals. Diverse large mammalian fauna from these beds is dominated by Alpine ibex and chamois and indicates a mixed rocky and forested environment fringed by grasslands (Mihailović et al., 2022). The lowermost Layer 3 of the Mala Balanica Cave, sterile with regards to stone artifacts, produced a large mammal association with Canis sp., Ursus sp., Crocuta spelaea, Cervus elaphus, Dama dama, Capra ibex. Most importantly, the lower part of this Layer (3b) yielded a hominin mandible fragment (BH-1) with a combination of primitive and shared derived traits and with no Neanderthal characteristics (Roksandic et al., 2011, Skinner et al., 2016). This combination of traits could indicate the presence of Homo bodoensis Roksandic et al. 2022 in the Eastern Mediterranean, but this proposal still needs to be tested. The combination of dating methods (ESR dating, with U-series and infrared luminescence) yielded a minimum age of 397–525 Ka for the Layer 3b (Rink et al., 2013), marking the BH-1 as the oldest hominin found in eastern Europe. To give an independent evaluation of the age of the BH-1 hominin specimen, we studied the micromammalian content of Layer 3b. Seventeen samples from excavations of 2008 in the vicinity of the mandible included the following taxa: Chiroptera indet., Ochotona sp., Spalax sp., Sicista subtilis, Allactaga sp., Apodemus ex gr. sylvaticus-flavicollis, larger cricetine (?Cricetus sp.), smaller cricetine (?Nothocricetulus sp.), Clethrionomys sp., Dinaromys sp., Lagurus transiens, ?Chionomys sp., Microtus arvalidens, Microtus cf. agrestis, Microtus (Stenocranius) gregaloides. This assemblage combines characteristic species of the European Cromerian, i.e. the early Chibanian. The concurrent ranges of L. transiens, S. gregaloides, and M. arvalidens suggest a more precise correlation. The age bracketing is provided by estimates of the lowest stratigraphic datum of Lagurus transiens to be not older than 0.7 Ma (Maul, Markova, 2007; Tesakov et al., 2019) and highest stratigraphic datum of Microtus (Stenocranius) gregaloides to be not younger than 0.6 Ma (Maul, Markova, 2007; Maul, Parfitt, 2010; Parfitt, Preece, 2022). This suggests a time range of MIS 15 to MIS 17. In the East European biochronological system, this fauna belongs to the unit MQR4–6 (concurrent range zone of Mimomys intermedius and Lagurus transiens). The combination of a short time (ca. 0.1 Ma) and a most extensive geographic range of the M. gregaloides (more than 8 thousand km) makes this biochron one of the keystones in the Middle Pleistocene continental biostratigraphy of Eurasia. The small mammal assemblage from Layer 3b combines forms characteristic of colder climate and open habitats (cricetines, Microtus gregaloides, Lagurus transiens, jerboas) and forest dwellers (Apodemus, Clethrionomys). Mesophilic forms are present in the refugial zones of the Balkan Peninsula even in the coldest periods of the Pleistocene (Bogićević et al., 2011), whereas the open habitat animals could penetrate this region only during colder climatic phases. Therefore, we tentatively correlate the fauna from Layer 3b of Mala Balanica to the glacial period of MIS 16, with an estimated age between ca. 0.7 and 0.62 Ma (Cohen, Gibbard, 2022), a time of the spectacular Don Glaciation of Eastern Europe and the Glacial b of the Cromerian complex of NW Europe
The Significance of the Works of Metropolitan Georgije Nikolajević for the Study of Serbian Medieval Literature
Owing to the intellectual acumen and education of Metropolitan Georgije Nikolajević,
the first collection of Serbian medieval chrysobulls, charters, and documents was published in
1840, under unique historical circumstances. Throughout his life, Nikolajević tirelessly sought
out Serbian medieval documents and manuscripts, which he meticulously prepared and
published. His proficiency in multiple languages (including Latin, German, Italian, Russian, and
possibly French) enabled him to broaden his scholarly horizons, allowing him to write and
translate with great competence.
Deeply invested in the entirety of Serbian history, he paid particular attention to
Dalmatia in his studies. Nikolajević believed that the continuity and existence of the Serbs in the
regions he examined could only be fully comprehended through an analysis of medieval
conditions. He authored several articles on Dubrovnik and its surrounding areas, exploring the
city’s history from its earliest days to the mid-19th century. His writings covered a wide range
of subjects, including the city’s constitution, educational institutions, language, religion,
inhabitants, attire, trade, industry, land and its products, taxation, major landmarks, and civic life.
Additionally, he researched the history of Kotor, Zadar, Split, Lika, and Krbava. His
scholarship was profoundly influenced by sources such as Constantine Porphyrogenitus, The
Chronicle of the Priest of Dioclea, Mavro Orbini, Thomas the Archdeacon, and Ludovicus Cerva
