Social determinants of mental health: The role of proximal and distal factors

    No full text
Background: A body of evidence indicates that mental health is influenced by social factors. Aims: This study aims to explore the social determinants of mental disorders by applying a conceptual framework for the social determinants of mental disorders. Method: The study was conducted on a representative sample of the Serbian population (N = 1,000, age range, 18–65 years). A wide spectrum of mental disorders (depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, somatization, eating disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, dissociation, and prodromal symptoms) and five domains of proximal and distal social determinants of mental health were assessed. Results: Distal variables predicted symptom severity across all disorders. Proximal variables predicted symptom severity of all disorders over and above distal predictors. Conclusions: Our study highlights the importance of a wide range of social determinants that contribute to mental health

Testing the Effectiveness of the Psychosocial Support Program for Youth

    No full text
Youths are a group at risk of developing mental health difficulties and there is a need for evidence-based psychosocial programs. The aim of this study is to test the effectiveness of the Psychosocial support program for youth. It consisted of six group workshops and individual sessions, held by psychologists, and covering the topics of mental health such as help-seeking, social support, and stigma. One-group pretest-posttest design was used with inclusion criteria being between 13-24 years of age and not undertaking any other form of psychosocial/psychiatric treatment. A total of 78 youth (Mage = 16.34, SDage = 2.01, 16.9% males) who participated in the Program agreed to take part in the study. The participants were from the general population, recruited conveniently by the service providers. Inventories measuring well-being (WHO5), quality of life (MANSA), mental health literacy consisting of knowledge and attitudes towards mental health difficulties (School Mental Health), depression (PHQ9), and anxiety (GAD7) were administered at three time points: before the Program implementation (pre-test), immediately after the implementation (post-test) and one month after (follow-up). By using the Bonferroni correction we adjusted the statistical significance level based on the number of tests performed. The Bonferroni correction was applied to the results of the paired-samples T-test, with 0.004 set as a Bonferroni-corrected p-value. The results showed that there is a significant decrease in post-test measures of depression (t (54) = 3.536, p = .001, Cohen’s d = 0.48), and an increase in positive attitudes (t (53) = -3.625, p = .001, Cohen’s d = -0.49) and knowledge (t (54) = -5.794, p = .000, Cohen’s d = -.78). The analysis of follow-up measures revealed significant decreases in measures of depression (t (19) = 4.880, p = .000, Cohen’s d = 1.09) and anxiety (t (19) = 6.047, p = .000, Cohen’s d = 1.35), with increases in attitudes (t (19) = -5.494, p = .000, Cohen’s d = -1.26) and knowledge (t (19) = -9.308, p = .000, Cohen’s d = -2.08). Although the results support the effectiveness of the Program, they should be interpreted with caution due to the high rate of sample attrition, and the absence of a control group resulting from resource constraints.31. međunarodni naučni skup Empirijska istraživanja u psihologiji 28–30. mart 2025; Filozofski fakultet, Univerzitet u Beogradu - Institut za psihologiju i Laboratorija za eksperimentalnu psihologiju, saopštenje štampano u izvod

School context shapes school actors which in turn shape school context

    No full text
The school functions as a dynamic entity, with each generation of students contributing to its evolution. This ongoing process is influenced by various stakeholders and the complex interactions that shape the school’s environment. Facing uncertainty, education systems are tasked with preparing students to navigate instability. In response, the concept of schools as learning organizations has gained prominence. This paper examines the dynamic interplay between school actors and their context, grounded in an ethnographic study of a primary school in Belgrade, Serbia. Data collected through fieldnotes, document analysis, and interviews reveal a systematic effort to build the school as a learning organization. These efforts resulted in the school being recognized as one of the top ten nationally, with students achieving above-average results on standardized tests. However, a leadership transition disrupted this trajectory. Following the retirement of a principal who guided the school’s transformation, a state-appointed replacement introduced practices misaligned with the school’s established principles. This led to abrupt changes, mismanagement, and resistance from the school community, which ultimately replaced the candidate with a leader aligned with the school’s ethos. The findings underscore the school’s agency in shaping its context, actively responding to challenges and reaffirming its identity as a learning organization. The study highlights the importance of understanding context as a dynamic interaction between individuals and systemic processes, offering practical insights for advancing schools as adaptive and resilient learning organizations

Understanding the needs and perceived importance of mental health support for refugees in the Western Balkans route

    No full text
Despite an observed decrease in refugees transiting to Europe through the Western Balkans transit route, the difficulties and risks refugees face during transit persist, including risks of being trafficked, exploited, and harmed. Human rights violations in refugees’ countries of origin, along with the dangers of their transit to Europe, pose high risks for developing mental health difficulties and require mental health support (MHS). The aim of this research study is to further understand refugees’ needs and perceived importance of MHS in the current transit context along the Western Balkans route. The study was conducted from May to July 2024 and involved 12 persons (9 females), average age 34.5 years (SD = 11.55), that were accommodated in the Asylum center Krnjača in Belgrade, Serbia. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews conducted by psychologists experienced in providing MHS to refugees, accompanied by cultural mediators. The interviews were audio recorded and transcribed verbatim. The transcripts were analyzed qualitatively following the principles of thematic analysis, and the themes were developed and defined in an inductive and iterative manner. Three groups of themes emerged from the analysis – 1. Informal support as an important but limited resource (a. self-support; b. informal conversation as a resource), 2. Professional MHS as the crucial resource (a. professional as a selected support resource; b. female therapists as the preferred support resource; c. professional as an empathetic counselor; d. positive effects of professional support), and 3. Characteristics of professional MHS (a. support adapted to beneficiaries; b. timing of professional support). The study results deepen the understanding of current needs regarding MHS among refugees in transit and offer implications for practice in terms of types of support to be provided, the importance of professionals providing MHS and the need for adaptability to specific contexts.27. The evolution of the biosphere: Vladimir I. Vernadsky and the concept of common evolution

    No full text
The growing interest in astrobiology renewed the enthusiasm of contemporary scholars to explore the Earth Systems Science theories of the twentieth century and scholars who influenced the later development of astrobiology. Vladimir I. Vernadsky seems to be recognized as one such scholar. In this paper, I provide an analysis of one such theory, Vladimir I. Vernadsky’s theory of the biosphere, and explore his conception of evolution in nature. I begin my research with the presentation of Vernadsky’s conceptual framework by explaining the meaning of the term “biosphere” and identifying the fundamental assumptions of his holistic theory. Next, I turn to the analysis of the concepts of living and inert matter, questioning their distinction and mutual relations. Whilst the differences between living and inert matter should enable us to demarcate these two domains of the biosphere and distinguish them at the ontological and conceptual levels, it seems that such an objective remains unattainable for Vernadsky. I find the reason for this conclusion in Vernadsky’s endorsement of a specific relation of reciprocal causality between living and inert matter. As I show, the relation of reciprocal causality emphasises the causal activity of the living matter and unifies it with the inert matter of the biosphere, leading to the unique conception of the common evolution of the living and inert matter, i.e., the evolution of the biosphere. However, Vernadsky’s synthesis of living and inert matter causes certain difficulties in the theory, reflected in our inability to clearly differentiate between living and inert matter at the ontological and conceptual levels

Aristotle’s influence on Mihailo Markovic’s philosophy of praxis

    No full text
The philosophy of Mihail Marković revolves around the concept of praxis, a central theme in Yugoslav Praxis philosophy, where he is regarded as its most prominent representative. Mar ković sought to articulate the formal and normative aspects of this term. In my paper, I will focus on elucidating this concept within the framework of Aristotle’s practical philosophy. Similar to Aristotle, Marković defines praxis as a diverse array of human activities, while also characterizing it as a unique and authentic engagement that defines humanity itself. Both thinkers describe practice in terms of its underlying principles and purposes. Ultimately, my paper aims to illustrate how Marković’s reflections on praxis highlight the importance of his humanism. By delving into this concept, we can gain valuable insights into the nature of distinctive human activities and their philosophical implications.

Transnationalization vs. Eco-Nationalism: Discursive Framing of Environmental Struggles in Serbia

    No full text
This chapter explores the interplay between nationalist (eco-nationalist) framing and the transnationalization of environmental struggles in Serbia, focusing on the case of protests against lithium mining in the Jadar Valley. The discursive framing of the protests varies along the eco-nationalist axis, and we aim to explore how this framing influences the potential for the transnationalization of environmental struggles. The research is based on the critical discourse analysis of content on the social media and media outlets of the environmental organizations involved in protests against lithium mining in Serbia: “Let’s Protect Jadar and Rađevina”, “March from the Drina”, and “EKO Social Action”. The findings suggest that eco-nationalism (especially the ethnic subtype) can limit certain paths towards transnationalization (e.g., forging alliances with organizations from “core” countries). However, as can be seen in this case, it can also open up new avenues of cooperation with activists from (semi-)peripheral countries facing similar environmental injustices

Religion, Dynasty and Enlightenment: Serbian Patriotism in the Habsburg Monarchy in the 18th Century

    No full text
The concept of patriotism, present in the political, social, and cultural life of Serbs in the Habsburg Monarchy during the 18th century, represents an interesting and complex historical phenomenon. Patriotism manifested through religious, dynas tic, and constitutional forms, each with its specific features and role in preserving Serbian identity and culture. Religious patriotism focused on preserving the Orthodox faith and culture, with pilgrimages, relics, and shrines playing a crucial role in shaping spiritual and national identity. Pilgrims often brought back mementos in the form of illustrated books and engravings, which served as reminders of sacred spaces and events from Christian history. These books and engravings also had an educational function, transmitting religious messages and strengthening the sense of belong ing to the community. Additionally, the cults of Serbian saints formed an essential aspect of religious patriotism, acting as heavenly protectors of the people and the land. Their relics were greatly revered and became the object of pilgrimages. Dynastic patriotism, emphasizing loyalty to the ruling Habsburg dynasty, played a key role in the formation and strengthening of national identity within the Habsburg Monarchy. Although the monarchy was multiethnic and multiconfes sional, the idea of loyalty to the dynasty served as a means of integrating various peoples and cultures. The ruling dynasty symbolized unity and continuity, while religious and cultural activities helped strengthen ties between different ethnic and religious groups. Serbs remained loyal to the Habsburg crown while striving to pre serve their religious and national identity. This loyalty was expressed through par ticipation in ceremonies, military campaigns, and other public manifestations. Constitutional patriotism was based on the idea that laws and the consti tution were the foundations of political life. In the context of the Serbs in the Habsburg Monarchy, this meant fighting to preserve and expand their privileges. Overall, patriotism among the Serbs in the 18th century was a key factor in pre serving their identity and culture within the Habsburg Monarchy. Patriotic feeling was more than mere love for the homeland; it implied active dedication and readiness for sacrifice for the community’s welfare and its values. This helped build a strong community capable of facing numerous challenges and pressures, remaining true to its values and traditions. As such, it inspired many generations of Serbs who fought to preserve their faith, culture, and traditions, and its influence is felt even today.Конференција „Концепти национализма и патриотизма у српском политичком дискурсу – Средњи век, нови век, савремено доба“, Филозофски факултет Универзитета у Београду 30. и 31. маја 2024. - Саопштења штампана у целин
