Sands of time: Paleolithic sites Crvenka and At near Vršac (Serbia)
Although the Paleolithic finds from the northern foothills of the Vršac Mountains have been collected since the end of the 19th century, the richest assemblages - Crvenka and At, have been discovered in the second half of the 20th century. In the period between 1954 and 1978, R. Rašajski, curator of the City Museum of Vršac, by controlling the industrial exploitation of sand and gravels, built up large assemblages that count over several thousands of finds. His work was oriented toward recording the locations and their stratigraphical positions. Thanks to his work, it was recorded that the Upper Paleolithic artifacts originate from sand quarries at the locations At and Crvenka, settled on the southeastern part of At ridge, 2-4 km northern of Vršac city center. He also noted that the finds were collected in the layers of sand below Pleistocene loess. This pioneering work served later as the foundation for the archaeological excavations of At site, organized in 1984 by the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade, and later on in 2014-2015 as a collaboration between the University of Belgrade and the University of Cologne. Both campaigns confirmed Rašajski’s data on stratigraphical positions of the finds, earlier interpretations of the material, and the ways how it was deposited, furtherly complimented by the first results of absolute dating (Radovanović, 1986; Mихаиловић, 1992; Chu et al., 2014; Chu et al., 2016; Nett et al., 2021).
This paper aims to present the significance of sites Crvenka and At in the Paleolithic of Serbia, the influence of post-depositional processes that affected the stone tools and the importance of sedimentological and archaeological research of Pleistocene sand deposits in the southern part of the Pannonian plain.Saopštenje štampano u izvod
(Re)framing contested heritage as shared: a possible scenario
U postkonfliktnim društvima, interpretacija osporavanog kulturnog nasleđa
predstavlja kompleksan izazov.
identiteta i održivog mira nedovoljno istražena.
pregovaranju, prevođenju i reinterpretaciji kroz interakciju različitih društvenih narati-
va.
akcentovana uloga mladih u ovim procesima. Kroz analizu rezultata, rad pokazuje kako
kolektivno prisvajanje i simboličku rekonstrukciju kulturne memorije, a radi društve-
nog pomirenja. In post-conflict societies, the interpretation of the contested cultural heritage
presents a complex challenge. The reason for this is the fact that heritage bearing traces
of conflict, division, and denial is often marginalized or instrumentalized in processes
of reconstructing social cohesion. Consequently, its role in building collective identity
and sustainable peace remains insufficiently explored. With this in mind, this paper raises the question: how can heritage that divides us serve as a foundation for unity? The
theoretical framework of this study is based on a heritological approach, with particular
reference to an anthropological perspective and human rights studies, which view heritage as a fluid entity subject to negotiation, translation, and reinterpretation through
the interaction of different social narratives. The empirical part of the research is based
on a case study conducted within an elective course on Heritage Technologies, carried
out in 2024 at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Belgrade. The focus of the investigation was on cultural mediation and the semantic reinterpretation of heritage in an
educational context, with particular emphasis on the role of youth in these processes.
Through the analysis of the results, this study demonstrates how contested heritage can
be transformed into a common resource, creating space for collective appropriation and
symbolic reconstruction of cultural memory, aimed at societal reconciliation
Long-Term Neurocognitive Effects of an Early Reading Intervention in a Shallow Orthography
This study investigates the neurocognitive effects of an early reading intervention on Serbian children, leveraging ERP methodology to examine lasting neural changes five years post-intervention. A 36-session ALGO reading training was administered to an experimental group (N=23) with a matched control group (N=23) during preschool. Behavioural outcomes demonstrated significant improvements shortly after the intervention. To explore the long-term effects of this intervention, we recorded EEG data from 13 children from the same experimental group and 13 control group children from the same schools, matched in age, gender, and TIP-I test results. EEG data were collected using a mobile mBrainTrain Mobi semi-dry system. MMN and N1 ERP components were analysed to assess phonological discrimination and orthographic processing, respectively. While no significant differences in the MMN effect were found, the experimental group still exhibited a more pronounced negative response to deviant auditory targets. The N1 component showed marginally significant results for word stimuli, with the experimental group displaying enhanced negativity and a stronger word versus false font differentiation, particularly over the right hemisphere. These findings suggest persistent neural markers of the early reading intervention years after its completion, but also point to a low level of reading skills in third and fourth-grade children who should have a more pronounced MMN and N1 negativity by this age, especially a more pronounced left N1 laterality for word stimuli. This study highlights the sustained impact of early reading interventions on neural processing and supports adjusting educational practices to introduce reading instruction earlier to improve literacy outcomes.9th Congress of the Serbian Neuroscience Society, October 6-8, 2025, Belgrade, Serbia

Example of the Correspondence of the Office of the Doge of Venice From the 17th Century: Ducal Letter of Doge Alvise Contarini
It is known that the notary and chancellor played an important role in the written
production of the office of the Doge of Venice since the late Middle Ages. The documents
created within the said office can be classified as legal documents and contracts, and then
there are the letters of the parliament that come from the pen of the Doge or the Venetian
envoys in other countries. Most of the mentioned sources are kept in the State Archives of
Venice, while a certain number of documents are in archives in Istria and Dalmatia. One
such example of a source is the 17th-century transcript of Doge Alvise Contarini, which
forms part of the collection of Venetian documents available through the online State
Archives in Pazin. The document was written in the Venetian dialect of the Old Italian
language, and represents a valuable testimony in the field of cultural and literary history

Syrian King and Syrian Goddess: Hellenistic Influences on the Ideology and Political Organization of the two Great Sicilian Slave Revolts
Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean and the ancient point of contact between Africa, Italy, Greece and the Eastern world, witnessed two massive slave uprisings in the 2nd century BC. Together with the later revolt of Spartacus in Italy in the 1st century BC, the movements of Eunus-Antiochus of ca. 140/135-132 BC, and that of Salvius-Tryphon and Athenion of ca. 104-100 BC form the triad of great slave wars such as were never seen in antiquity, before or since. Twice in the same
century, during a period of several years, former slaves built states of their own, states that controlled large portions of the island and exchanged blows with the Roman armies, with surprising success. Our main source, Diodorus of Sicily (books 34/5 and 36, preserved in excerpts and fragments), describes these new political structures as recreations of the Hellenistic kingdoms. This tendency is especially remarkable in the case of the First Slave War when rebel leadership brought about, at
least outwardly, a Western replica of the Seleucid monarchy of Syria. Historians of the older generation took notice of these developments, though attempts at deeper analysis were rare. With one significant exception, the newer historiography has either ignored Hellenistic connections of the Sicilian slave revolts, or dismissed them as marginal. This paper argues that Hellenistic elements in the structure of the two ancient slave revolts are both substantial and historically significant. It was partly the case of simple ethnocultural affinity (the core of the rebels, including most of the
leadership came from Syria and Asia Minor), but also of great practical necessity that political entities created by the former slaves took on the form of the military monarchy of the kind prevalent in the Hellenistic East.A shorter version of this paper was presented at the 22nd ATINER Annual International

Antiserbism in Bosnia and Herzegovina: from Historical Revisionism to the Abolishment of Republika Srpska
The paper describes certain aspects of contemporary Bosniak
nationalism in Bosnia and Herzegovina: a cultural pattern that
oscillates between the dream of a Turkish Bosnia and the dream
of a Caliphate in Bosnia and Herzegovina; historical revisionism,
through which an attempt is made to build the identity of the
”Bosnian people of three religions” while denying the national
identity of Serbs; a unitary form of Bosniak nationalism, which
undermines the Dayton Agreement and the existing constitutional
structure of Bosnia and Herzegovina; and the existential threat to
Republika Srpska, starting from the demand to change its name,
to the demand from the SDA Declaration (2019) for its abolition.
As the preservation of the existence of Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina is closely linked to the Republika Srpska, its threat
– including by Bosniak unitarism – goes beyond the academic
question of ”the most dangerous nationalism” and becomes an
important cultural, social and security problem for the entire
region
Is a Colored Revolution Underway in Serbia in 2025?
We cannot yet give a definitive answer to the question of whether we
are dealing with a colored revolution in Serbia today or not, since we are currently unable
to have more reliable information about the actions of a foreign factor and the strength of
its influence on the student-civic movement. However, the paper lists at least seven other
characteristics of colored revolutions that we also recognize in the current protests in
Serbia. This is still not enough for an indisputable classification, but it is enough to establish a hypothesis about the character of these protests. Of course, this social process,
like others, is not historically closed - which is why social phenomena can surprise us
with their unexpected movement or even a different character compared to the classification we have established. But the excitement and beauty of social sciences lies in these
very unexpectedness and hiddenness, as true challenges to our theories and research
tools. The issue of a colored revolution in Serbia in 2024/2025 represents just such an
open challenge
Emotions in Transition: Material Reflections from the Mesolithic to the Neolithic
Studies on emotions confirm both their natural and cultural foundations. Basic emotional
capacities are innate and emerge early in phylogenetic development across all known
cultures and in higher mammals. However, the organism actively interacts with its
environment and plays a crucial role in its own development.
Can a unified methodology for studying emotions in archaeology be developed? Just as
the study of emotions in other disciplines does not follow a uniform path, neither can
archaeology, as each new investigation expands the possibilities and scope of emotional
reconstruction. Nevertheless, the knowledge of emotions and previous archaeological
research provide some fundamental guidelines: 1) While there is no consensus on the
universality of emotions, we are biologically predisposed to experience basic affects 2)
The materiality and emotional life of a given culture (and of the human species as a
whole) are deeply interconnected.
Psychological research has confirmed the interconnection of cognition, emotion, and
behaviour, encouraging archaeological efforts to incorporate emotional factors into the
interpretation of material culture. If artifacts, bioarchaeological remains, and landscapes
allow for the reconstruction of past human actions and thought processes, they are valid
for assessing emotions. As with other aspects of research, understanding the context of
findings is essential for interpreting emotions.
When archaeologists write about emotions, they describe their experiences and
perceptions, not as direct analogies but as sources of inspiration, hinting at competence
and responsibility in addressing a particular topic. From the emotional perspective of a
researcher shaped by a country in transition during the era of globalization, I examine
Mesolithic hunter-gatherer communities encountering the agricultural world of the
Neolithic, exploring: 1) Whether traces of prehistory reveal cultural temperaments -
cultures of hope or cultures of fear, 2) How material culture reflects the relationship
between collective, group, and individual emotions in times of instability. The 31th European Association of Archaeologists Annual Meeting (Interwined pasts), Belgrade Virtual, 2-6 September 2025 - Saopštenje štampano u izvod
