Comparing dental sizes between boys and girls in the Bronze age Mokrin necropolis (2100-1800 BC)

    No full text
Data on the dimensions of the teeth of girls and boys in the Bronze Age are almost non-existent due to the limitations in determining the sex of children based on their skeletal remains. A unique opportunity to study dental dimorphism among 57 Bronze Age children is provided by the fact that their biological sex was previously determined through peptide analysis. Our analysis included a metrical study of teeth from 24 boys and 33 girls who lived between 2100 and 1800 BC, buried at the Maros culture necropolis in Mokrin (Banat, Serbia). The mesiodistal and buccolingual diameters of permanent maxillary and mandibular molars were measured on an optical digitizing device. For this research, we have also measured the same diameters on all adults with available teeth and estimated sex by standard anthropological analysis. All the results were then compared to calculate the sexual dimorphism of the Bronze Age Maros population buried in Mokrin cemetery. Also, we compared the obtained results between children and adults. This way we gain insight into sexual dimorphism and differences in dimorphism expression in various ages in the Mokrin population, as well as the question of whether sexual dimorphism is noticeable in the teeth of boys and girls/men and women in Maros communities. The 31th European Association of Archaeologists Annual Meeting (Interwined pasts), Belgrade Virtual, 2-6 September 2025 - Saopštenje štampano u izvod

In the Search of Yugoslav Heroes: The Construction of Common Medieval Heroes in the Yugoslav Interwar Historiography

Malobrojne profesionalne istoričare, okupljene oko univerziteta u Beogradu, Zagrebu i Ljubljani, novonastala politička situacija usmerila je ka reinterpretaciji dotadašnjih, najčešće partikularnih, nacionalnih istorijskih narativa. Analizirajući reprezentaciju zajedničkih heroja u istoriografskim radovima Stanoja Stanojevića, Vladimira Ćoro-vića, Viktora Novaka, Ferda Šišića i Milka Kosa, posvetićemo se zajedničkim karakteristikama i razlikama u strategijama konstruisanja istorijskog narativa u tri najvažnija centra jugoslovenske istoriografske produkcije. The creation of the Yugoslav state after the First World War also had an impact on historiography. The new political situation prompted the small number of professional historians, gathered around the universities in Belgrade, Zagreb, and Ljubljana, to reinterpret existing, often particularistic, national historical narratives. The subject of this paper will be the works of Yugoslav interwar historians who, in analyzing the past of the “Yugoslav tribes”/“Yugoslav people”, identified common medieval heroes whose endeavors were seen as precursors to the subsequent Yugoslav unification in 1918. We will define a limited number of historical figures who were highlighted as the most significant Serbian-Croatian-Slovenian (Yugoslav) heroes of the medieval period. Next, we will address the question of what earned them a prominent place in the emerging Yugoslav historical narrative and how the interwar heroes differed from their prewar counterparts

Far Right in Serbian political thought Dragoš Kalajić as a model and symbol of contemporary Serbian Far Right

    No full text
The paper theoretically defines far right, extreme right and radical right. Afterwards, it embedds thought and practice of Dragoš Kalajić in the context of various ideological streamings within the European far right 1971- 2024. This half-century period can be roughly divided into three subperiods: 1) from the first Kalajić’s books till multi-party system formation 1971-1989; 2) from multy party-system formation till Kalajić’s death 1989-2005; 3) after Kalajić’s death. The first one was determined by Kalajić’s adoption of Giulio Evola’s and the New Right ideas. The second one was related to Wars of Yugoslav succession, formation of the ”Serbian New Right“, consisted of Kalajić’s closest extreme right followers, extreme right Serbian National Renewal and its paramilitary unit White Eagles, and Kalajić’s orientation towards Russia and Alexander Dugin’s ideas. The third one was marked by posthumous ideological Kalajić’s influence on Serbian academic authors of radical right orientation. Ideology-critical approach reveals reasons behind the fact that an Evola’s epigon was enabled to publish three books at reputable publishers in former Yugoslavia, and has been highly respected among extreme rightists since the end of socialist Yugoslavia. By the same token, the paper explains why Dragoš Kalajić has recently become a role model and symbol for the mainstream intellectuals who converted to radical right ideas

Some Characteristics of Abstracts in Scientific Research Papers in French

Scientific communication, governed by clearly defined formal, linguistic, and content-related rules, aims to convey scientific knowledge to the scientific community in an objective, neutral, precise, and unambiguous manner. Consequently, authors strive to distance themselves from their text, focusing on the research itself and eliminating redundant elements without clear purpose. In French, these requirements can be met through the specific use of personal pronouns, passive constructions, impersonal verbs/structures, tenses, moods, sentence modes, participial and infinitival forms, nominalizations, and relative clauses. Given the growing volume of scientific papers and journals, researchers face the challenge of presenting their research concisely to capture the reader’s interest. In this context, the abstract plays a crucial role. Universally recognized in scientific circles as an essential component of a research paper, the abstract follows a structured format and succinctly summarizes the article’s main content, making it a distinct genre. Building on these linguistic principles, this mini pilot study examines the elements and structures that ensure neutrality and linguistic economy in French abstracts within the humanities, social, and biomedical sciences, aiming to determine their frequency, reasons for their presence or absence, and the need for further research in this area. The study hypothesized that the occurrence and frequency of the examined linguistic tools would be significant, and that the abstracts would structurally align with the technical requirements set by journals. The results revealed the presence of elements ensuring objectivity and linguistic economy, though their distribution was uneven. Notably, pronouns like on and the authorial we were absent, and the use of impersonal verbs, constructions, and gerunds was minimal. Abstracts predominantly featured forms that promote conciseness (e.g., anaphoric use of personal pronouns, present participles replacing relative clauses, passive constructions without an expressed agent or auxiliary verb). Therefore, the hypothesis that these elements would be widely represented in the corpus was only partially confirmed. Additionally, it can be inferred that the abstracts, as an introduction to a scientific article, is primarily oriented towards concise informativeness. In some abstracts, certain forms appeared more frequently, suggesting that scientific texts are not entirely resistant to the influence of personal style. Thus, the hypothesis that authors strictly follow the guidelines set by scientific journals was not proven. While the findings are limited by the small corpus size, they underscore the relevance of further research in this area

Ka tome da postanete “matematička osoba”: odnos između emocija postignuća, ličnih uverenja i matematičkog identiteta

    No full text
The current study explored the relationship between mathematics beliefs (MB) (perceived competence, intrinsic value, extrinsic value and cost), academic emotions (AE) (anxiety, boredom and enjoyment), mathematics identity (MI) and mathematics achievement (MA) among eight-, nine– and ten-year-old students. The model specified in path analysis proposed that MI is associated with MB and AE. Furthermore, according to this model, MI is associated with MA and perceived competence. Results show that the model fits the data, supporting the assumed relationship between the variables and thus possibly confirming MI has a strong influence on MB. However, the relationship between MB and AE was more ambiguous. Enjoyment was the only emotion linked to mathematics identity. Finally, MA was affected by perceived competence but not by mathematics identity. The findings confirm a robust circuit of associations between intrinsic value, enjoyment and MI, signalling the importance of tracking the development of student’s interest and MI. The lack of association between MI and MA, points to the need for an educational system that prioritises mastery-oriented goals instead of achievement-oriented ones.

The Importance of Pride When Learning Math: The Influence of Academic Emotions and Motivation on Mathematics Achievement

    No full text
Emotions and motivation are important in students’ learning and achievement. This study explored how discrete positive and negative emotions, alongside motivational beliefs such as intrinsic value, utility, and perceived competence, relate to students’ performance in mathematics. A total of 644 Serbian high school students completed questionnaires on their emotional and motivational experiences in mathematics. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that positive emotions, particularly pride, were strong predictors of achievement, while negative emotions had little effect. When motivation was considered, pride and perceived competence emerged as the most important factors, while the impact of enjoyment declined. These results show the close connection between how students feel and their confidence in their abilities. They also point to the need for more focus on positive emotions like pride, which may encourage deeper engagement and better performance in school. Understanding how these emotions develop in the classroom could help teachers better support their students' success.31st International Scientific Conference Empirical Studies in Psychology - March 28 – 30, 2025, Belgrade - Preliminarna verzija saopštenja u celin

Landscape as practice: parks and rivers in the visual culture of Belgrade in the first half of the 20th Century

    No full text
This paper analyses various representations of urban nature in the visual culture of the modern era, with a particular focus on examples from painting, photography and postcards. Historically, a clearly articulated awareness of nature as an autonomous category is closely linked to the development of modern society. One of the defining features of modernity is the transformed relationship between humans and nature, which becomes evident through the pervasive presence of the concept of the image of nature, as well as through processes of musealization and institutionalization of nature in Belgrade’s society during the first half of the 20th century. In this study, the notion of landscape is reinterpreted as a verb; shifting from a passive noun to an active, living process or practice. This perspective enables a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between space and identity, highlighting the interactive and performative dimensions of nature, as well as the ways in which the image of nature operates as an agent in the construction of reality and social relations, rather than merely serving as a passive representation or spatial record. The research methodology is primarily grounded in visual culture studies, the social history of art, and cultural history. The conclusion argues that interpreting the evolution of the image of nature in Serbian visual culture of the early 20th century allows us to trace the development of the society in which such art was produced. Moreover, it emphasizes that the image of nature – and of the landscape in particular – is never politically neutral. Every depiction of nature embodies layers of cultural and social determinants that reflect its spatial and temporal context. Special attention is paid throughout to motifs of urban parks and rivers.13.

Deconstructing the Idea behind the MADE IN Knowledge Atlas: Merging Technology, Human Creativity and the Interpretation of Cultural Heritage

    No full text
The idea of creating an Atlas of World Knowledge, a microcosm all in one place, is probably as old as humankind. It is still embodied in a variety of collections, literary concepts, artworks, encyclopaedias and virtual creations. The concept of knowing everything and remembering and preserving at least one representative example from each layer of the world has always been a utopian dream, however: an endless process in which at least some of the puzzle is always missing. The MADE IN Platform for Contemporary Crafts & Design is a research, design and heritage initiative fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange between designers, craftspeople and other experts in the fields of culture and science, and the Knowledge Atlas — described by the project authors as a comprehensive repository of transdisciplinary expertise and natural resources — is at its very core. With over 100 multimedia entries recording traditional techniques, materials, processes and modern innovations, it is an invaluable resource for exploring craftsmanship, making and designing, not just in order to preserve traditional processes but also to transform them into meaningful and sustainable knowledge for the future. Published on the MADE IN website, the Atlas comprises textual material and photographic and video documentation. In order to better understand its potential, however, we must first return briefly to the very idea of creating an atlas of knowledge
