Work During and After Serving the Prison Sentence: Double Precarization in the Service of the Preservation of Capitalism

    No full text
Penal systems are not only mechanisms of social control, but also complex institutions that are deeply rooted in the wider socio-economic context. In various phases of capitalism, the prison system has functioned as an instrument of social control, which not only punishes, but also shapes and controls individuals, especially from the marginalized classes. Within this system, prison labor should be seen not only as an economic transaction, but as a form of unfree labor, thus perpetuating the cycle of poverty and criminalization. Neoliberal state policies often contribute to the precariousness of the prison labor force, using convicts as cheap labor. This kind of work usually includes low-skilled activities characteristic of informal, precarious jobs that are socially, legally and economically devalued. On the other hand, after release, the combination of social stigmatization, precarious employment and precarious conditions on the labor market (characterized by low-skilled, insecure and poorly paid jobs) creates fertile ground for further labor exploitation of ex-convicts. If they were not already part of the precariat, upon release, even if they had stable employment before serving their prison sentence, most ex-convicts face the challenge of concluding precarious work contracts, which further worsens their position on the social ladder. This paper contributes to the understanding of the complex interactions between penal systems and neoliberal practices, and explores the complex relationship between penal systems and capitalism, with particular emphasis on the impact of neoliberalism on prison labor and its role in the reproduction of economic inequalities. The aim of the paper is to show the way in which the double precarization of (former) convicts, both during the serving of the sentence and through reintegration and resocialization policies and inclusion in the labor market, contributes not only to the increase in the number of individuals who remain trapped in precarious positions on the labor market, rather, it enables the reproduction of neoliberal capitalist relations. In other words, this paper shows that the social and state attitude towards the prison population is only one in a series of gears that enable the preservation of the modern form of capitalism.Editor Ljeposava Ilijić Монографска студија/поглавље монографији M12 или рад у тематском зборнику међународног значај

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed, Something Green: How Different Domains of Traditional, Alternative, and Complementary Medicine Use Are Rooted in an Irrational Mindset

    No full text
Despite insufficient evidence base for some of its practices, traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine (TCAM) use is rapidly growing; psychological roots of this trend are still under-studied. Based on previous research, input from TCAM practitioners, and content analysis of online media, we developed a comprehensive instrument to measure the use of TCAM and administered it to an online community sample (N=583). Factor analysis indicated four domains of TCAM use, in line with theoretical taxonomies: Alternative medical systems, Natural/biological products and practices, New Age medicine, and Rituals/Customs, all converging toward a common tendency. Irrational beliefs and cognitive biases, especially magical health beliefs and naturalness bias, predicted unique variance in both TCAM attitudes and overall TCAM use, above sociodemographic variables, reported health status, and ideological beliefs. Furthermore, each domain of TCAM use, although differing slightly in sociodemographic/psychological profile, was consistently associated with an irrational mindset, even after controlling for other factors. This provides strong evidence for exploring psychological susceptibility to the use of traditional, complementary, and alternative medicine

“Nisi nadležan”: How a Student Movement Dictates Political Change in Serbia (2024/2025)

    No full text
In November 2024 a largest student movement in Europe, since 1968, erupted in Serbia instigated by government corruption and violence. Since then, the students have occupied the buildings of the higher educational institutions across the country, organized and inspired massive protests in more than 250 cities, towns and villages and performed different actions with the goal to draw attention to their struggle for the establishment of the rule of law, the proper functioning of the state institutions and the democratization of the Serbian society. By comparing the student movement of 2024/2025 to the ones from 1968 and 1996/1997, this paper explores how student movements, in particular the ongoing one, can dictate political changes in Serbia

When it comes to the research of parenting in the social sciences, fatherhood is a phenomenon that has not been studied extensively. Usually, parenting is discussed in general or research on par enting focuses mostly on mothers. The beginning and development of parenting education and edu cational programs for parents are primarily associated with mothers, their role in the functioning of the family and the upbringing of children. It has long been believed that fathers do not have a major, direct influence on the early development of a child and that their influence is reflected primarily in the economic provision for the family and support for the mother of the child. Two streams of research are responsible for changing this picture – the first of them refers to research into the consequences of the father’s absence on the development of his child, while the second one refers to the research of the influence of fathers on the development of their children. The conclusions of the researchers are con sistent – the role of the father in his child’s development is crucial. In our research, and some research results will be presented in this paper, we tried to determine what changes fatherhood brings to per sonal, individual development of fathers. Our goal was to probe into the perception of the fathers of young children of these changes as potential sources of their need for lifelong learning. In the research, we used the survey method and the semi-structured (in-depth) interview technique. The most signifi cant results of the research indicate that the changes that the birth of a child brings into a father’s life are certainly the source of his need for lifelong learning.Rad predstavlja prerađen i dopunjen master rad Potrebe očeva dece ranog uzrasta za obrazovnom podrškom, odbranjen 13. 12. 2022. godine na Filozofskom fakultetu Univerziteta u Beogradu (pod mentorstvom doc. dr Zorice B. Unravelling the story of animal exploitation in the territory of present-day Serbia during Late Antiquity – an archaeozoological overview

    No full text
According to published archaeozoological data, during the Late Antiquity – between the 3rd/4th and the beginning of the 7th century CE – in the territory of present-day Serbia, strategies of animal exploitation were primarily oriented toward the breeding of domestic species, while hunting and fishing had played a secondary role. The most frequently represented species were those of great economic importance, such as cattle, caprines, and pigs. Aside from these taxa, remains of equids, camels, and pets were discovered in the unearthed faunal assemblages. As indicated by biometric data, changing practices of animal husbandry led to changes in domestic animal body size. Remains of wild game were rare and represented by species that were available in the areas surrounding the sites, while fish remains were scarce. Although the archaeozoological research on the Late Antique settlements is modest, the available data gives valuable insights into animal exploitation strategies and suggests the presence of some regional differences. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to provide insight into animal exploitation strategies from different regions and settlement types by bringing together archaeozoological data. This article is part of a special issue entitled: ‘1st and 2nd ICORB’ published in Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports

The Influence of Influencers: Insights from Serbian Young Adolescents

    No full text
With the rise of social media, an increasing number of young people regard “influencers” as figures they look up to. Influencers are generally defined as content creators who engage large audiences on social media by leveraging their authenticity and broad reach. Previous research have predominantly employed frequency-based designs and closed-ended questionnaires constructed by researchers to track trends in influencer impacts on youth behavior. While valuable, such studies have certain limitations, including inconsistencies in defining the term “influencer” and predefined categories of risks and concerns that reflect researchers’ perspectives rather than the participants’. Our main goal was to provide young people with a more participatory role, discussing their understanding of the term “influencer” and their perception of influencers’ behavior. To achieve this, we conducted four focus group interviews (FGIs) with seventh-grade students from elementary schools in Belgrade. The research included 24 boys and girls, where each FGI consisted of 5-7 participants. The data were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis. Our participants defined influencers as individuals who earn their living by creating social media content to promote their lifestyle. One of the inducted themes is the impact of influencers on young people’s interests and preferences, including admiration for their successes or skills and a desire to emulate influencers. Another theme illustrates comparisons with influencers, seen as praising (motivation to excel, e.g., in sports/gaming) or adverse (negative body image or disappointment in parents' financial situation). A final theme centered on concerns about influencers’ authenticity and real lives, as participants acknowledged that influencers are often paid to advertise specific products, which may not necessarily reflect their genuine preferences or usage. Our study's findings support the notion that adolescents can critically evaluate the content they encounter on social media. They perceive influencers as “workers” and recognize their potential harmful influences, especially when promoting “harmful things” (e.g., gambling platforms). While our study does not provide a basis for generalizability, we argue that further qualitative research is needed to deepen our understanding of young people’s perspectives on social media influences and potentially harmful content before conducting broader quantitative studies on representative samples.31. međunarodni naučni skup Empirijska istraživanja u psihologiji 28–30. mart 2025. - Saopštenja štampana u izvod

    Counterpossibles and Hirsch's Ontological Deflationism

    No full text
Eli Hirsch argues that many ontological disputes are merely verbal. For instance, the debate between endurantists and perdurantists ultimately reduces to a choice between equally valid alternative ontological languages for describing reality. According to him, the dispute dissolves once both sides recognize that each speaks the truth in its own language. To facilitate this recognition, he devises a translation scheme that enables them to bridge their differences. When a perdurantist claims that an object has a temporal part at a certain time that possesses a particular property, the endurantist interprets this as a statement about how the object is at that time. The idea is that for any sentence in one ontological language, there is a corresponding sentence in the other that is true in all and only the same possible circumstances, making the two languages equivalent. Hirsch employs an intensional notion of equivalence, insisting that two languages are equivalent only if they can express exactly the same characters, that is, the same functions that assign “coarse-grained” truth conditions to contexts. By “coarse-grained” truth conditions of a sentence, Hirsch refers to the set of possible worlds in which a given sentence is true. However, at certain steps in the mutual translation of rival metaphysical theories, Hirsch appeals to counterpossibles (counterfactuals with impossible antecedents). In the case of the dispute between endurantists and perdurantists, his translation scheme includes sentences of the form: on the assumptions of perdurantism (endurantism), a certain perdurantist (endurantist) claim holds. We are dealing with counterpossibles because, from the perspective of endurantism, it is impossible for perdurantism to be true, and vice versa. Traditional possible-worlds semantics trivializes counterpossibles by treating them as vacuously true. Here, Hirsch adopts Daniel Nolan’s approach, which treats counterpossibles using impossible worlds, and endorses non-vacuism – the view that some counterpossibles are false rather than all being true by default. This commitment draws him into the debate between vacuists and nonvacuists. Moreover, a treatment of counterpossibles that relies on impossible worlds may expose his position to another difficulty: it introduces hyperintensionality, which he seeks to avoid at all costs. Hirsch takes a conservative stance on hyperintensionality in metaphysics, arguing that hyperintensional distinctions and a more refined conception of meaning do not play a significant role in ontological disputes. My aim in this presentation is to examine the extent to which Hirsch's acceptance of non-vacuism and his conservative stance on hyperintensionality in metaphysics affect the acceptability of his ontological deflationism.Issues on the (Im)Possible XI, May 27-29, 2025 Bratislava, Slovaki

Strategije upravljanja konfliktima: Uloga ličnosti i specifičnih uverenja o socijalnim odnosima u Srbiji i Italiji

    No full text
This study explores the relationships among conflict management strategies, personality traits, and beliefs about social relations in Italy and Serbia. These two European countries are geographically close, but have different histories, traditions and religions, and they differ along the individualistic-collectivistic dimension. Goals: The study aims to explore and compare the way in which basic personality dimensions predict specific conflict management strategies, as well as the way in which the Competitive Jungle worldview and the beliefs about conflicts mediate their relationship in different cultures. Method: The sample comprised 764 young people, aged 18-30 (M=21.54, SD=2.80). The measures included the Dutch Test of Conflict Handling, Mini IPIP-6, Delta personality inventories, Competitive Jungle Worldview and Conflict Beliefs scales. Path analyses were applied with seven personality traits as predictors (Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness, Conscientiousness, Honesty, and Disintegration), two social relation beliefs as mediators, and three conflict management strategies (Cooperative, Defensive, and Competitive) as criterion variables. Results: The results indicate that the common predictors are Openness and Agreeableness for the Cooperative strategies, Agreeableness and Disintegration for the Defensive strategies, and Extraversion for the Competitive strategies. Neuroticism and Conscientiousness are not implicated in conflict situations, while Honesty and Disintegration have a different impact on this form of behaviour in these two cultures. The results have confirmed different pathways of personality traits through the beliefs about the world as a competitive jungle and the beliefs about conflicts as threats or challenges. Conclusion: Basic personality traits, as universal dispositions for behaviour, have similar effects on conflict management strategies in both countries, while differences are observed in the mediating role of beliefs, which are shaped by the cultural differences existing between Serbia and Italy
