ARTEM-IS for ERP: Agreed Reporting Template for EEG Methodology—International Standard for Event-Related Potential Experiments

    No full text
The choices we make during the recording, preprocessing and analysis of event-related potentials (ERP) data can affect study outcomes. As such, it is critical that they are transparently reported to allow for reproducibility. Yet, systematic reviews of reporting practices in the field have shown that journal articles often do not meet this goal and that existing reporting guidelines have not resulted in a sufficient improvement in reporting transparency. An easier workflow for transparently documenting pipelines used in regular journal articles is needed. The ARTEM-IS (Agreed Reporting Template for EEG Methodology—International Standard) initiative is working towards addressing this issue by building dynamic, interactive web applications that support documenting information required by existing publication guidelines in the form of a standardized metadata template. Completing an ARTEM-IS form results in a human-reader-friendly PDF or DOCX and a machine-readable JSON summary of methodological information. This level of specificity surpasses conventional article methods sections, ensuring fewer omissions and ambiguities. These can be used as supplements to a publication, as a memory aid when writing a paper, or as records that allow easier metadata extraction. Here, we present the ARTEM-IS for ERP, which supports describing a typical ERP study, including most of its core methodological aspects (study description, experimental design, hardware, data acquisition, pre-processing, measurement, visualization, additional comments). We discuss the current functionalities of ARTEM-IS for ERP, its development via a grassroots collaborative initiative, and potential extensions (e.g., including complex designs or statistical analyses). In doing so, we highlight how widespread adoption of ARTEM-IS can benefit researchers, reviewers, and the broader scientific community by improving transparency, reducing reporting errors, and expediting rigorous replication efforts

The treasury holdings of the Church of St George in Knjaževac comprise liturgical objects and ecclesiastical furnishings that can be traced chronologically from the foundation and construction of this urban church to the present day. In cultural-historical terms, the most valuable items in the collection are the antiminses, Gospel books, and silver liturgical vessels dating from the nineteenth century. These objects reflect the material culture of the period in which they were created, pointing to iconographic types and artistic forms consistent with contemporary liturgical practice and the ecclesiastical realities of the time. Particularly noteworthy are the chalices and the petochlebnitsa produced by the Belgrade goldsmith Jovan Nikolić, which stand out among his numerous known works as distinctive and unique creations. These liturgical objects testify to the influence of affluent merchants from Knjaževac who, through their choice of donated objects and their personal aesthetic preferences, shaped the local ecclesiastical visual culture. Both dynastic and civic patronage played a decisive role in defining the appearance of worship as well as the relationship between state and church during the nineteenth century, indirectly extending into the sphere of individual private life. The liturgical objects that participated in the ritual life of the community gathered around the Church of St George thus provide a dynamic reflection of the cultural, religious, social, and economic circumstances of the inhabitants of Knjaževac over the past two centuries.

The corpus of liturgical objects preserved in the treasury of the Cathedral Church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos in Zaječar has not yet been subjected to systematic scholarly analysis or contextualized within the history of national ecclesiastical art. The liturgical objects from the cathedral church of the Timok Diocese reflect the religious, cultural, and social dynamics of this spiritual space over the past two centuries. Through selected material artefacts, it is possible to partially reconstruct the liturgical reality of the faithful and the contours of episcopal worship as performed in the Zaječar Cathedral Church. These movable material objects shaped the lived realities of both the laity and the clergy alike. Mechanisms of patronage reveal the key protagonists who, through policies of votive donation in the service of public and private memory, secured representation within the sphere of liturgical remembrance by means of representative liturgical objects. As the intermittent seat of the bishops of the Timok Diocese, the cathedral church in Zaječar accumulated a certain number of objects intended specifically for episcopal worship. Interpreted in light of the function and cultural characteristics of the assembled liturgical objects, the treasury as a whole emerges as a source of new historical layers in the understanding of the Zaječar Cathedral Church

Paleodemography of the Middle Bronze Age (1650-1500 BCE) horizon of the necropolis in Ostojićevo

The Middle Bronze Age horizon (1650-1500 BCE) of the necropolis in Ostojićevo (Banat, Serbia) is notable for its large number (103) of child burials in ceramic vessels. The primary question is why children were buried in this unusual manner and what prompted this distinctive and unique (for the period and region) practice. In this presentation, we explore this issue from a paleodemographic perspective. We aim to explore whether the burial site at Ostojićevo functioned as a regular necropolis for the nearby living population during the period between 1650 and 1500 BCE, or whether the burials—particularly child burials in vessels—reflect an unusual event or process. Specifically, we analyze the age distribution of the Ostojićevo Middle Bronze Age mortuary population to determine whether the mortality regime was unusual or consistent with the expected preindustrial pattern of attritional mortality. To achieve this, we examine the ratio of adults to subadults, and we compare the age distribution of children within the subadult population to the corresponding distributions from the preindustrial model life tables. The age structure of subadult individuals interred within the Middle Bronze Age horizon at the Ostojićevo necropolis was reconstructed through the analysis of a sample involvin. 48 individuals. Periapical and orthopantomographic (OPG) dental radiography were employed for the examination of the entire sample. The age of individuals, ranging from 30 weeks in utero to 23 years, was estimated using the London Atlas (AlQahtani 2010). Radiographs deemed diagnostically acceptable for individuals exceeding 20 years of age were further analyzed using the Kvaal method (Kvaal 1995).The 31th European Association of Archaeologists Annual Meeting (Interwined pasts), Belgrade Virtual, 2-6 September 2025 - Saopštenje štampano u izvod

Pythagorean Thought in the Modern World: Exploring Atanasijević's Perspective on its Relevance

    No full text
In her writings on ancient philosophy, Ksenija Atanasijević deals with the most important aspects of Pythagorean thought – the theory of number and harmony, the doctrine of transmigration of souls, as well as Pythagorean protofeminism. Furthermore, she proposes that Pythagorean thought is still very much relevant for the modern world, particularly contemporary science. In this chapter, we offer substantial evidence in support of her claim. The Pythagorean-Platonic thesis that the structure of the world can be explained by harmonious whole-number ratios of physical quantities is very significant, and inspired by musical analogy. Although an aesthetic approach to the study of nature appears to be mostly outdated, it is important to note that it survives in a different, modernized form within some leading scientific theories. Further, the chapter discusses the Pythagorean doctrine of “transmigration of souls.” Could Pythagorean metempsychosis be an early version of the thesis of the continuity of life? Finally, one of the milestones of Pythagorean practice was to provide philosophical education to gifted women. It could be said that Pythagoreans undertook the first serious steps in the direction of women’s emancipation. Atanasijević’s thesis that some of the most notable Pythagorean philosophical ideas are represented in modern world appears to be quite plausible and is clearly supported by influential scholars

    Inverse Nationalism against Republika Srpska

    No full text
The introduction explains the concept of inverse nationalism, then the first part of the paper lists some characteristic examples of inverse nationalism towards Republika Srpska, and the second part of the paper explains the context and the function of inverse nationalism towards Republika Srpska. All those factors that otherwise produce inverse nationalism in Serbia also operate in the case of the stigmatization of Republika Srpska in a part of our public opinion. The comprador intellectual and media elite, normalizing the (neo)colonial subjugation of Serbia in all domains of life, takes the supposedly endemic and (self)destructive “Serbian nationalism”, and especially the “Serbian crimes” committed in the 1990s war, as the original sin that justifies the paternalism of (neo)colonial centres towards Serbia. Republika Srpska is a convenient subject within such an autocolonial narrative, as it unites the mythical “original sin” (“the Srebrenica genocide”) with the main current ideological enemy — “Serbian nationalism” — as characterized by the pronounced national selfconsciousness of the majority of Republika Srpska citizens

The Role of Sociology in Serbia’s Post-Socialist Transformation

    No full text
The main objective of this chapter is to examine the role of sociology in Serbian society over the previous three decades and how it has changed alongside changing global and local social contexts, especially those related to post-socialist transformation. Sociology’s impact on the processes of post-socialist transformation is explored through its different aspects and roles: of sociology as a science that produces knowledge, as a profession building its own institutional infrastructure and organisational networks, and as expertise that offers applicable knowledge and influences the shaping of public policies. At the individual level, sociologists act as academics, engaged intellectuals, educators, experts, politicians, journalists, civic activists, and political analysts. As a social formation, sociology, therefore, produces structures but also meanings and interpretations of the social world, creating material as well as cultural (ideological) forms. In analyzing the role of sociology in Serbia, we will rely on the cultural political economy approach (CPE). The core of our analysis will be devoted to discourses on post-socialist transformation that circulated within the two most influential sociological journals in Serbia and some other key writings by Serbian sociologists, over the 1990–2020 period. In accordance with the CPE approach, we will address the issues of selection, retention, and possible reinforcement of certain discourses and rejection of other discourses.5th ISA Forum of Sociology July 6–11, 2025, Rabat, Morocco - Saaopštenje štampano u izvod

Thinking, Writing, and Deciding with AI: Human Agency in the Digital Age

    No full text
This book provides a comprehensive introduction to the field of artificial intelligence, examining the inner workings of machine learning and large language models through a philosophical lens. It navigates key debates regarding the nature of intelligence, consciousness, and linguistic understanding, while critically analyzing how these technologies reshape human autonomy, epistemic virtues, and cognitive skills. By investigating challenges ranging from the impact of deepfakes to the erosion of agency in automated decision-making, the book explores how AI influences our role as moral and epistemic agents. Ultimately, it seeks to define the conditions under which AI can serve as a vehicle for human enhancement and the strengthening of our intellectual integrity, rather than a source of its decline

    Razgovor sa Džonom Kotingemom

    No full text
My conversation with Professor Cottingham – one of the foremost living authorities on Descartes – aimed to illuminate often-overlooked aspects of Descartes’ system and to explore unconventional interpretative perspectives. As a result, themes such as Descartes’ metaethics, philosophy of emotions, and the ontology and teleology of human beings and animals take center stage. Naturally, discussing a Janusian figure like Descartes necessitates examining influences that penetrate deep into the past, present, and future, Our conversation, therefore, extends to his Ancient and Medieval predecessors, his contemporaries, and his successors. The depth of his influence also invites Professor Cottingham’s reflections on contemporary themes, including issues of (mental) representation, problems of inverted spectrum, qualia problems etc. Ultimately, it might be easier to list the topics we didn’t discuss than those we covered. Serbian – and all other – readers are fortunate to have such an intellectual delight before them.
