Precarious Working Conditions for Foreign Workers in Serbia: A Content Analysis of Online Articles from Daily Newspaper Danas about the Linglong Factory

No full text
This study aims to analyse the precarious working conditions experienced by foreign workers in Serbia at the Linglong tyre factory in Zrenjanin. It seeks to elucidate the nature of these conditions, particularly for labourers from Vietnam and India, in the context where numerous regulatory violations, misuse of public authority, and a blatant disregard for human rights have already marked the Linglong factory. The authors employ a content analysis method, focusing on secondary sources due to constraints in direct data collection from the foreign workforce. The empirical material of the research is articles accessed through a targeted query “Linglong workers” on the website of the daily newspaper Danas. The temporal scope of the analysis extends from October 2021 to October 2024, coinciding with significant media coverage of migrant workers’ hardships during the construction and inauguration of the factory. The primary units of analysis focus on article themes and concepts that reflect temporal, organisational, social and economic dimensions of precarity, such as the confiscation of passports, inhumane living conditions, irregular remuneration, unpaid overtime, failure to remit social contributions, denial of sick leave, prohibition of paid annual leave, obstruction of independent trade union organisation, and instances of belittlement. Additionally, the analysis seeks to evaluate the orientation associated with these themes and concepts, categorising them as positive, negative, or neutral. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the precarity and multilayered vulnerability of migrant workers in Serbia, particularly within the foreign investment framework. By focusing on the Linglong factory as a case study, the research illuminates the broader implications of precarious labour conditions in global supply chains.Conference New Divisions, Struggles, and Solidarities in South East Europe Belgrade, 13–14 June 202

An insight into dietary habits at the Monastery of St Barbara (south-western Serbia) during the early modern period: a zooarchaeological perspective

No full text
From the late 14th century onwards, and throughout the early modern period, the Ottoman conquest of Serbia led to the devastation of churches and monasteries and the conversion of some sacred Christian sites into mosques. One of the active monasteries during this time was the Monastery of St Barbara, located near Novi Pazar (south-western Serbia). Written sources indicate that the monastery was built during the first half of the 16th century and continued in use into the 17th century, when it was burned down, as shown by archaeological excavations. For a short period of time, this monastery served as a temporary seat of the Bishopric of Ras. The excavations have also confirmed the existence of an older medieval cemetery beneath the monastery buildings and traces of presumably earlier building remains. Archaeological material of the 16th and 17th centuries was not abundant, consisting mostly of pottery, and less numerous small finds and faunal remains. This paper aims to present the results of faunal analysis from the Monastery of St Barbara and reveal the dietary habits and characteristics of the everyday life of the monastery’s inhabitants from a zooarchaeological perspective, as well as indirect traces of trade. The analysis suggests that domestic animal meat and fish were predominantly consumed. Sheep and goat remains were the most abundant, as the most significant source for exploitation of primary and secondary products. Albeit small, the faunal assemblage from a few contexts at St Barbara uncovered to date is significant since it is the only known early modern period monastic faunal collection from the territory of Serbia

Interpreting contested heritage: musealization of the idea of reconciliation on TikTok

No full text
In the domain of heritage governance, interpreting the remnants of the past that we would prefer to forget presents the greatest challenge for heritage managers. Although this issue has gained attention since the end of World War II, civil and inter-ethnic conflicts at the close of the 20th century have further amplified its relevance. These struggles were characterized by the deliberate destruction of others’ heritage. If continuity with the past shapes our identity, bestows uniqueness, and differentiates us from others, can these remnants, interpreted from multiple perspectives, foster reconciliation? Who should determine what we will forget and remember, what we will preserve, and how we will interpret it? These are just some of the questions to which, even today, we have no precise answers, despite numerous UNESCO conventions and published works by leading experts. Starting from the premise that it is essential to change perspectives and approach the issue from the grassroots level, through engagement with local communities and universities, this paper aims to explore whether and to what extent it is possible to influence young people’s attitudes toward the unwanted legacy of the past; how to musealize the concept of reconciliation, and whether TikTok, as a mode of communication, serves as an appropriate tool for its heritagization. The research was conducted during the summer semester of 2024 as part of the project Back to the Future or How to Make Peace with the Past in order to Create a Better Tomorrow Together, supported through the call Towards a Culture of Shared Future in Southeast Europe from the Regional Network of Centers for Advanced Studies of Southeast Europe

Parenting styles and social competencies in prediction of conflict management strategies of youths in Serbia

No full text
Conflicts are inevitable aspects of human behavior, but the lack of skills for constructively dealing with them contributes to many individual and social problems. Therefore, it is important to understand the factors that may contribute to a different approach to conflict situations. The study aimed to explore how the perception of parental styles and personal social competencies predict the conflict management strategies of young adults in Serbia. We have included parental styles based on the assumption that the parental model of communication could have impact on modeling social behavior of youths. Method: The sample included 288 participants (69% females), aged 18 to 30 years (M = 21.54, SD = 2.80). The applied inventories were The Dutch Test of Conflict Handling –DUTCH, reduced on three factors: Cooperative (α = .88), Competitive (α = .72), and Defensive conflict management strategy (α = .72); Multidimensional Social Competence Scale which included empathy (α = .87), emotional regulation (α = .81), verbal conversation skills (α = .78) and non-verbal skills (α = .87), and EMBU scale for parenting style - authoritarian (α = .87), permissive (α=.80), and democratic styles (α = .82). The hierarchical multiple regression analyses were applied with gender, age, and parental styles (first step) and social competencies (second step) as predictors and conflict management strategies as criterion variables. Results: The first model was the significant predictor of Cooperative strategy [F (5,277) = 3.955, p < .01, R2 = .07], but no individual variables (gender, age, or parental style) reached the significance. The social competencies had stronger predictive power (F (10,272) = 16.416, p < .001, R2 = .38) where each of them were significant: empathy (β = 0.20, p < .01), verbal communication (β = 0.21, p < .01), nonverbal communication (β = 0.22, p < .01) and emotional regulation (β = 0.25, p < .001). Parental styles didn’t predict the Defensive strategies [F (5,277) = 0.145, p = .981, R2 = .00]. At the same time, social competencies, although significantly contributing, explained just 7% of the variance [F(10,272) = 2.214, p < .05, R2 = .07], where only empathy had some predictive power (β = 0.20, p < .05). Competitiveness was significantly predicted in the first model [F(5,277)= 4.267, p<.01, R2 = .07], with gender (β = 0.13, p < .05), age (β = -0.157, p < .05), and democratic parenting style (β = 0.19, p < .01) as significant predictors .The second model had stronger predictive power [F(10,272) = 5.650, p < .001, R2 = .17], with verbal communication skills (β = -0.21, p < .01) and emotional regulation (β = -0.15, p < .05) as negative predictors. Conclusion: All social communication competencies predict Cooperativeness, but they are not strong predictors of Defensiveness, while low verbal and emotional regulation skills predict Competitiveness. Parental styles explained the lower level of variance in predicting all conflict management strategies which could result from the subjective perception of the parental style of their children.31. međunarodni naučni skup Empirijska istraživanja u psihologiji 28–30. mart 2025; Filozofski fakultet, Univerzitet u Beogradu - Institut za psihologiju i Laboratorija za eksperimentalnu psihologiju, saopštenje štampano u izvod

Teorije zavisnosti. Kapitalizam iz vizure periferije

Knjiga "Teorije zavisnosti.

Taj identitet nadilazi problematiku muzičke scene i preliva se na razumevanje i kreiranje jedne vrste „znanja“ kako o samom gradu, tako i o narečenom perioduThe New Wave movement in rock and roll music represents a significant phenomenon within the local (Yugoslav) context. Its impact on the perception of both the past and the present is reflected in the continuous and increasingly pronounced need to organize tributes in the form of concerts, exhibitions, panel discussions, documentary films, and novels. This paper presents an anthropological analysis of the novel When You Say That I Am Yours (Kada kažeš da sam tvoj) by the writer Goran Skrobonja. The novel is set in the second half of the 1980s, during the existence of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. The main protagonist, Lazar Petronijević, lives and grows up in Belgrade and belongs to the ‘New Wave’ rock and roll scene that emerged in the early 1980s and continued to exert its influence in various forms throughout the decade. The aim of this research is to reconstruct the meanings attributed to the New Wave movement, the music scene of the time, and the city of Belgrade during that period, meanings that are shaped through memory and personal narratives. One of the conclusions drawn from the analysis is that the reality presented in the novel largely corresponds with the kind of (New Wave) reality that is frequently discussed, written about, filmed, and continuously reproduced as the ‘everyday life of the 1980s in Yugoslavia’. The novel’s analysis also reveals that although the term New Wave is not explicitly mentioned in many instances, it is deeply embedded in various meaningful elements identified in the text, such as descriptions of the city, public and private gathering places, radio and television shows, and magazines. These elements, which form the basis of the socialization process centered around music, not only create a symbolic network of meanings that shape the daily life of Lazar Petronijević but also ‘bring back’ to the 1980s a particular generation of readers, to the time of their youth, allowing them to evoke memories while simultaneously constructing retrospective meanings that transcend individual experiences and evolve into shared cultural representations, thus making them anthropologically relevant.

Normalisation of Passivity During Childbirth – Positive Experiences and Trust in the Healthcare System in Serbia as Generators of Justifying Passivity

No full text
Research and practice show that within the healthcare system (HCS) in Serbia, women’s passivity during childbirth is normalised. Both HCS staff and female patients hold this representation of women as inherently passive. The paper aims to present research findings on passivity normalisation during childbirth. This study aimed to investigate the factors related to HCS experiences contributing to this passivity normalisation. Participants (N=363, 252 with childbirth experience) completed scales measuring trust in medical staff, distrust in the HCS, reliance on the HCS, frequency of positive and negative experiences with the HCS, and normalisation of passivity during childbirth. The examined factors accounted for 25% of the variance in normalising passivity during childbirth. Specifically, participants who were more reliant on the HCS, had given birth and reported more positive or fewer negative experiences, were more likely to normalise passivity. Paradoxically, a positive relationship with the HCS led to adopting the passivity norm, while negative experiences were a protective factor. The HCS appears to teach women passivity, as positive experiences within the system reinforce the perception of passivity as appropriate
