Raw material studies of the Paleolithic record from Hadži Prodanova pećina in Serbia

    No full text
The site of Hadži Prodanova Pećina is a cave located in the western part of Serbia in central Balkans. Excavations of this Palaeolithic site, carried out in the early 2000s, revealed a small collection of artefacts corresponding to Gravettian and Mousterian contexts. The aim of this paper is to present petroarchaeological study of lithic assemblages and its importance for the reconstruction of behavior in the past. First results of the petrological identification of the artefacts revealed presence of quartzite, quartz, chert and silicified rocks as raw materials for their production with non-identical representation in different Palaeolithic contexts. Analysis of the geological features of the cave’s surroundings, however, shows only a limited occurrence of knappable materials. The possibility to exploit primary and secondary deposits within the local zone was examined. The procurement area, mobility and dispersion of operational sequence were also considered. The results suggest that there is a distinct interdependence among the raw material availability, the site occupation duration and the structure of the lithic assemblages. Raw material studies of Middle and Upper Palаeolithic contexts will be presented first, followed by a comparison of general outlines of raw material economy patterns proposed for both periods. The 31th European Association of Archaeologists Annual Meeting (Interwined pasts), Belgrade Virtual, 2-6 September 2025 - Saopštenje sa međunarodnog skupa štampano u izvod

Factors contributing to the decision of our students studying abroad to return to Serbia

    No full text
The trend towards internationalization is driven by an increase in the number of international students choosing to study abroad. This practice has also been observed in the Republic of Serbia, where in recent years, the number of Serbian students participating in the international educational market has been growing. Due to high competition, many small and underdeveloped countries around the world are searching for models that would encourage the return of highly educated (young) talents and professionals who study abroad. Relying on the push-pull theory, this research examines the factors that influence the decision of Serbian citizens who are currently studying abroad to return to their home country (potential returnees), as well as the actual decision of Serbian students who, after studying abroad, returned to Serbia (returnees). The sample (N=122) includes students at all levels of academic studies (undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral studies). The research was conducted through a questionnaire from November 2023 to January 2024. Socio-demographic data (11 questions) were collected, and students’ attitudes and experiences regarding academic mobility were examined (33 questions). This time, we focused on the results concerning the factors that influence the decision-making process of our international students to return to Serbia, considering socio-demographic variables (such as gender, socio-economic status of the student’s family, and the level of studies abroad). It was found that the most important factor for the majority of our international students in deciding to return to Serbia is related to their profession, primarily securing a well-paid job in their field, and to a lesser extent, favorable conditions for starting their own business—support from the state (a total of 40.1%), as well as factors related to the family aspect (21.3%).Trend ka internacionalizaciji uslovljava povećanje broja međunarodnih studenata koji se opredeljuju za školovanje izvan matične zemlje.

    No full text
Critical thinking is essential for the meaningful and effective use of artificial intelligence (AI) in gifted education. While AI can be a highly valuable tool in both teaching and learning—especially by enabling individualized and flexible approaches—its use without well-developed critical thinking skills carries the risk of becoming superficial, mechanical, or even harmful.Meaningful application of AI requires a certain level of knowledge, the ability to articulate problems clearly, formulate precise questions, assess the accuracy and relevance of information, and recognize or distinguish assumptions, biases, or value judgments from facts, all while taking the context into account. When asked about the role of critical thinking in the use of AI in education, AI itself highlights the importance of ethics and the need for responsible use—particularly regarding academic integrity, maintaining a critical stance toward AI, and understanding that, from both a student’s and teacher’s perspective, AI is a tool and support system, not a replacement for the learning process.

An Analysis of the Political and Economic Elite in Serbia during the Post-Socialist Era

    No full text
Studying the upper social classes is one of the central themes in empirical sociological research on social structure. However, this is one of the most challenging topics to research, which makes such studies particularly valuable. In Serbia (and previously Yugoslavia), empirical research on social stratification has a tradition of over fifty years. The first comprehensive study of the Yugoslav elite was conducted in the 1970s (Barton et al., 1973). Subsequent research took place in the late 1980s (1989) with a large-scale study of the social structure of Yugoslav society titled “Social Structure and Quality of Life in the SFRY.” This survey included sub-samples for the political and economic elite. Over the next three decades, research on stratification in Serbia continued almost on the same theoretical and methodological basis, which enables comparative analysis. Research on the economic and political elite was conducted by the Institute for Sociological Research in 1993, 2003, 2012, and 2015. Notably, such research is rare in this part of Europe, which makes the importance of this research even greater. The paper aims to present research on the political and economic elite in Serbia during the post-socialist period. It analyzes various aspects contributing to the consolidation of this social group as a privileged class that controls political and economic resources. These aspects include intergenerational and intragenerational mobility, economic position, value patterns (such as political and economic liberalism), etc. By analyzing the systemic transition from socialism to capitalism, and the changes that followed the collapse of socialism, the broader aim is to assess whether the consolidation of political and economic elites has progressed to the point where we can speak of the emergence of a new capitalist class and full establishment of the capitalist social system in Serbia (including other social classes and groups).5th ISA Forum of Sociology Knowing Justice in the Anthropocene, International Sociological Association, Rabat, Morocco, 6–11 July 2025.- Saopštenje sa međunarodne konferencije štampano u izvod

New Middle Pleistocene hominin dental remains from Velika Balanica, Southern Serbia

    No full text
Located in the Sićevo Gorge near Niš in southern Serbia, Velika Balanica cave has previously yielded a small collection of dental remains attributed to early Neanderthals (Roksandic et al., 2022), dated to 285 ± 34 ka and 295 ± 74 ka using the thermoluminescence method (Mihailović et al., 2022). Here, we present three new dental specimens identified or discovered since 2020 in Layer 3a and 3b of Velika Balanica: a mandibular incisor (BH-7), a maxillary incisor (BH-8), and a mandibular molar (BH-15). The incisors display large and robust crowns and roots, corresponding to a dental morphological pattern typical of Eurasian Pleistocene hominins (Martinón-Torres et al., 2007). BH-8 exhibits linear enamel hypoplasia, offering insight into systemic physiological stress experienced during this individual’s childhood (Hillson, 2014). BH-15 molar displays a continuous middle trigonid crest (especially evident at the enamel-dentine junction), a feature consistent with Neanderthal attribution (Martínez de Pinillos et al., 2014). The morphology and metrics of the new dental specimens align with previous evidence, supporting the presence of an early Neanderthal population at Velika Balanica around 300 ka

University teachers competencies for teaching students with disabilities

    No full text
Since 2009, the Republic of Serbia has been promoting inclusive education policies thatenable persons with disabilities to be educated within the regular education system. Atuniversities, the representation of students with disabilities remains low, and their educationalexperience is still insufficiently explored. Research indicates that the low level of teachercompetence is one of the key barriers to providing quality education for this group of students.A mixed-method study was conducted to examine university teachers’ competenciesfor teaching students with disabilities, based on assessments made by both teachers and thestudents with disabilities themselves. The research covered three segments: (1) assessing therelevance of university teachers’ competencies for teaching students with disabilities; (2)assessing the development level of university teachers’ competencies for teaching students withdisabilities; and (3) the possibility of creating an empirically based model of universityteachers’ competencies for teaching students with disabilities. The analysis of the relationship between the perceived relevance and the developmentof competencies enabled the identification of areas in which university teachers require furthertraining. The findings confirm that university teachers lack sufficient systematic opportunitiesto develop the necessary competencies for teaching students with disabilities, and highlight theneed for a holistic, long-term approach to professional development that encompasses alldimensions of competence, thereby improving inclusive higher education. Based on the results, recommendations were proposed for designing educational programs aimed at developinguniversity teachers’ competencies for teaching students with disabilities
