Po czym poznać błazna? Postacie komiczne na kartach tytułowych polskich druków z XVI i XVII w.
Nieznany druk Angelusa Silesiusa a muzyczne aspekty jego ignacjańskiej duchowości
According to the inventory of the Sodality of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1661, Johannes Scheffler – who had already been known as Angelus Silesius for seven years at that point – gifted the association “Compacta Philothei Anonymi Societatis amoris”. The name is most likely a reference to a previously unknown text Philothei Anonymi Societas Amoris seu Spiritualis Animae amantis cum Deo Associatio…, signed with monogram “J.A.S.V.” and published in the same year by the Gottfried Gründer publishing house in Wrocław. The text – promoting church service praising divine love – clearly references devotional writings on the subject of nuptial motif created in numbers by Jesuits of the time. The references in question are related to the matter of cantional repertoire, known today from the songbooks of Friedrich Spree and his emulators, but also to popular para-theatrical of the Jesuit school theatre (Johannesa Paullin’s Philothea) and of the increasingly popular meditationes quadragesimales. The unearthed publication fits into both of these traditions and sheds new light on Silesius’ earliest known devotional text so far, Heilige Seelen-Lust oder Geistliche Hirten-Lieder… from 1657 by expanding the understanding of the mystic’s work in terms of the pastoral method used by the author as well as the languages of culture the clergy utilised at the time: song lyrics, their musical arrangements, and quasi-theatrical forms with formative and community-building functions. Philothei Anonymi Societas Amoris seu Spiritualis Animae amantis cum Deo Associatio… was published during what had been previously considered Silesius’ “silent” period and allows for a closer look at the author who, in 1661, was merely finalising his own spiritual formation and, as a newly ordained priest, was beginning his activities in various segments of Wrocław’s society. The contents of the text point towards Ignatian inspirations of the pastoral work done by Scheffler. It also allows for the reintegration of his historical portraits, entangling him in seemingly contradictory paradigms – on one side, a Counter-Reformation polemist, on the other, author of songs full of gentleness that so often crossed the religious divide. In the context of the pastoral program included in the text, one can also assume a different perspective on the later attempts at its reception, on both sides. Among Catholics, this is exemplified by the Divine Love Academy of Veit Scheifer, while among Protestants, a noteworthy fact is the popularity of Heilige Seelen-Lust oder Geistliche Hirten-Lieder, almost exclusively among evangelicals, and not just Lutherans, but various variants of mystical pietism as well

Absolutyzm Aleksandra III a Żydzi w Rosji w latach 1881–1894
Based on the analytical-comparative method, the aim of the article is to consider the correlations between the strengthening of absolutism in Russia by tsar Alexander III and the position of Jews in the state system. Policy towards Jews was an integral element of the “reversal of system reforms” aimed at strengthening autarchy. The legal and political mechanisms introduced in an above-mentioned period have had negative consequences for this group and have significantly worsened its situation in Russia
Is There a Self? Embodied Self-Experience and Cassirer’s Pluralistic Philosophy of Culture as an Antidote to the Crisis in Human Self-Knowledge
A view on selfhood informed by contemporary scholarship of the embodied philosophy of mind is invaluable because it validates self-experience as real in a rich and integrative manner, neglecting neither experience nor science. Subjectivity, intersubjectivity and their empirical underpinnings are included as necessary, non-reducible parts of a greater whole of experience. This breaks away from decades of reductive scientific approaches to the mind which dismissed experience as an epiphenomenon of neural processes without explanatory value, as well as from anti-scientific rhetoric of the existential sort. Embodiment research pursues a holistic approach to studying cognition but it does so often without providing an epistemological foundation for the harmonization of the various levels of description. Ernst Cassirer, who recognized the growing conflict of various modes of knowing, provided such an account. This article aims to bring Cassirer’s philosophy into a fruitful dialogue with embodied philosophy of mind in order to present a view on selfhood which affirms our everyday intuitions
Between Empiricism and Universal Scepticism: Notes on Two Contemporary Interpretive Models of the Gnoseology of Xenophanes of Colophon
This paper examines the two contemporary interpretation models of the philosophy of Xenophanes of Colophon formulated by Hermann Fränkel and Ernst Heitsch. It will be demonstrated that both models primarily relate to the two well-established ways of interpreting his gnoseology popular in the doxography of the 2nd and the 3rd C.E. and presented by Sextus Empiricus in a work titled Against the Logicians. The author considered them as two alternative ways of explaining Xenophanes’ skeptical philosophy, which, however, are based on the different approaches to the concepts of knowledge and opinion. The discussed interpretation models offered by Hermann Fränkel and Ernst Heitsch highlight one way of understanding the gnoseology of the philosopher of Colophon over the other. Therefore, based on Sextus’ approach, further analyses are required to combine the two opposite interpretation models proposed by Hermann Fränkel and Ernst Heitsch, which will take into account the historical, cultural, and philosophical background of the work of Xenophanes
