    No full text
In the years 2000–2015, sixteen publishers, called the “Lilliputians”, revolutionised the Polish children’s book market by offering innovative works by avant-garde authors and illustrators. Translations, which represented more than two-thirds of their offer, played a crucial role in this process. In this article, we examine the evolution of these publishers over the next five years (2016– 2020). We seek to identify their position(s) in the Polish publishing field and check whether they have kept their role as innovators. We therefore analyse, in the light of Pierre Bourdieu’s fields theory, the number of books published annually, the proportion of new titles in the catalogues, the preferred original languages in the case of translation, the number of award-winning books and authors, and the number of books whose publication was subsidised. The results of this study suggest that the position of the Lilliputian publishers in the Polish publishing field and their role have changed, although they have not modified their strategy. One of the reasons for this is the appropriation of their practices by other publishers

    No full text
Among the most important contributions of French thought to translation studies, two themes are indisputable: retranslation, addressed as early as 1990 in the now canonical issue of Palimpsestes, and the role of paratexts of translation. The names of Antoine Berman and Gérard Genette are now an “obligatory element” of the bibliographies of studies that explore different aspects of these two phenomena. Using recent advances in research on retranslation and the paratexts of translation, the author focuses on the peritexts added by retranslators to their translations of Pan Tadeusz. She shows that these peritexts are a place where the translator’s subjectivity and self-reflexivity are displayed, as manifested by (1) the choice of elements commented on in the encyclopaedic notes and the way these elements are valued in the comments; (2) the number of “self-corrections” or justifications for the techniques used; (3) the passages interpreted by the translator in the footnotes; (4) a strong link between successive translations, in the form of borrowings from previous versions, particularly the first one

    No full text
The present paper is the first in the series devoted to the study of the temporal dimension of the literary and photographic works of Claude Simon, Nobel Prize-winning author (1985). It proposes to examine the temporal aspect of movement and immobility, the latter not being considered as the opposite but rather as the superlative of movement, temporarily suspended. The analysis is mainly based on the philosophical theories of Gaston Bachelard and Henri Bergson, as well as the photographic ones written by Siegfried Kracauer and Roland Barthes. Influenced by the formal experiments of the Nouveau Roman, Simon rejects the traditional temporal structure of narrative in favor of Faulkner’s conception of the eternal “present of writing”, which translates at the photographic level where the present is split between the experience of the Operator (the photographer) and the Spectrum (the subject of the photograph). Time frozen in duration loses its progressive character but acquires a certain plasticity. Simon’s works capture the energy of motion and the hidden energy of rest and bring it to an explosive state in a paradoxical synthesis of vertiginous immobility

The overall statistics for the negative verbal representations of the macro-concept of man in the speeches of South-East Serbia point to the linguistic fact that micro-groups identified by the integral semantic component of ‘messy’ can be found among the first ten most frequent groups of synonyms. This finding related to the associative field ‘man’ in the Prizren-Timok image of the world represents a stimulus for a lingua-culturological description of the concept of non-hygiene, which corresponds to a lack of tidiness in physical appearance, apparel, one’s household, the work one does. The attitude towards hygiene is culturally coded. Society has clear esthetic criteria and standards of acceptability and neatness. Expressives which include the identifier ‘neat / messy’ have a subjective-axiological semantic component – an evaluation of the outward appearance and a moral evaluation, reflecting the characteristic features of dialectical lexis (the frequency of the expressive with a pronounced emotional component, increased intensity of expressivity, and an increased affective tone), along with the traditional spiritual culture and mentality of this speech community.

Czym jest postmodernizm? Głos po latach

    No full text
Philosophical postmodernism, since its beginning, has aroused controversies and was met with a great deal of criticism. One has to state, however, that there is an enormous confusion concerning what in essence this criticized philosophical approach is, i.e.: what is postmodernism? The aim of this paper is an attempt to clarify postmodernism by showing a significant part of its current reception, its relation with other philosophical currents, and pointing out some “myths” connected to it. As the title says, the presented article is a “voice years later”, so it is a voice asking about postmodernism today — when it is more mature and grounded than in the 1970s or 1980s. From this perspective, the main question of the text is: what kind of postmodernism (or: what understanding of postmodernism) makes sense and has value for contemporary philosophy

Niesprawiedliwość poznawcza według Mirandy Fricker. Zastosowania, zarzuty i kontynuacje

    No full text
The article presents the concept of epistemic injustice developed by Miranda Fricker (2007, 2017). The term refers to instances in which an individual is assigned an inferior epistemic position and thus is at risk of non-epistemic mistreatment. Fricker discusses testimonial injustice (subconsciously seeing someone as less credible) using the example of Simone de Beauvoir and Jean-Paul Sartre. Hermeneutical injustice, which is described as either a gap in knowledge or a harmful interpretation in the collective imagination, is exemplified by sexual harassment and homosexuality. One of the major critiques and developments of the concept of hermeneutical injustice was presented by Arianna Falbo (2022). She argues that the sources of hermeneutical injustice are not limited to gaps in knowledge but also a plethora of misleading concepts which cover up and overpower better concepts. Thus, the mere presence of appropriate concepts is not enough, the absence of harmful concepts is also necessary. The author claims that modifying the concept of epistemic injustice as proposed by Falbo explains why the existence of a nonbinary gender category in the German legal system was not sufficient to reject the binary gender system. Finally, the author discusses an analogous concept of epistemic disobedience from decolonial philosophy1. These discussions result in the claim that epistemic errors, overlooking certain experiences and/or usurping objectivity are the basis of unintentional discrimination

    Modelling Qualia with Physical Computers

    No full text
According to Frank Jacksonʼs knowledge argument, Mary, who lives in a black-and-white world, has all the physical knowledge about the world, yet she has new information when she sees a red apple. If we accept this, then physicalism – according to which the description of the world can be realised entirely with the help of physical theories – is false. However, even if Jacksonʼs argument about new information is true, we do not have to discard physicalism. Even exclusively physical computer systems are not capable of predicting their own sensory information if they are built using a specific structure and complexity. It can be shown that a specific type of computational system can lead to the creation of decision-related unpredictability of a specific type of sensory information. This investigation takes a charitable position towards the concept of qualia to provide it with a physicalist and computationalist explanation

Przeobrażenia strukturalno-funkcjonalne Wojska Polskiego w latach 1989–2015 (wybrane problemy)

    No full text
The article focuses on demonstrating the most important structural and functional transformations carried out in Polish Armed Forces in the years 1989–2015. The attention was drawn to the role of different factors that determine the scope and pace of these changes or the inconsistency in the implementation of prepared programs assuming the restructuring of the Polish armed forces. The article also describes the impact of the “Partnership for Peace” program and Poland`s subsequent accession to NATO on the acceleration of the process of modelling the structures of the Polish Army and the results of the restructuring measures taken
