The Transfer of the New Biography: Virginia Woolf and Lytton Strachey in Interwar Poland
This article presents the cultural transfer of the new biography, which attracted avid interest in interwar Poland. It reconstructs how modernist publishing networks circulated Virginia Woolf’s biofiction and Lytton Strachey’s modernist biographies, using previously unexamined archival correspondence from the UK and Polish archives, along with interwar newspapers and magazines from digital and print repositories in Poland. The article focuses on strategies of cultural transfer as developed by the publishing house Rój that launched Strachey’s books, as well as on diverse cultural mediators who reviewed and popularized Woolf’s and Strachey’s works. The early reception of Woolf’s and Strachey’s biographical experiments is examined in the context of the growth of Central European modernism(s) and interwar changes at the global literary marketplace

Refleksje Hannah Arendt o „banalności zła” w reportażu „Eichmann w Jerozolimie”
This article presents an analysis of the attitudes and contextualizes the conduct of Adolf Eichmann—the German Obersturmbannführer, executor of the Final Solution to the Jewish Question, whose trial, held in Jerusalem in 1961, became the basis for the book Eichmann in Jerusalem, written by the German philosopher Hannah Arendt. This study included a phrase concerning Eichmann’s behavior—the “banality of evil,” which, like the book itself, caused and constantly provokes numerous controversies, not only of a philosophical and existential nature, but also because of the way it is understood. The present article is an attempt to look at this issue from many angles, as well as to point out the avenues of criticism of the perception of A. Eichmann himself, whom Hannah Arendt describes as a cog in the German extermination machine. This perspective of the researcher, repeatedly questioned, has continued to provoke reflection for several decades. The question arises as to whether it is possible for a man who contributed to the extermination of more than 9 million Jews to be able to justify his acts only by the orders of his superiors he followed
Dekret Demofantosa — ateńskie prawo przeciw tyranii
The article is devoted to one of the Athenian laws against tyranny — the decree of Demophantos. It was aimed at protecting Athenian democracy against being overthrown again, and thus at preventing any authoritarian form of rule in this polis in the future. The author presents his own translation of this law, cited in Andokides’s speech On the Mysteries (1.96–98). Moreover, he supports the view of M. Canevaro and E.M. Harris, according to which the text of the decree cannot be perceived as an authentic document, being in fact a later addition to this speech. The only elements of the decree that can be regarded as genuine are those, which are confirmed in speeches of Demostenes (Against Leptines 159–162) and Lycurgus (Against Leocrates 124–127)
Przepisy prawa regulujące nadanie i zmianę imienia i nazwiska jako narzędzie formowania nowego społeczeństwa w państwach o ustrojach niedemokratycznych — część II
The subject of the article are legal regulations concerning giving and changing names and surnames, analyzed in the context of their role in the formation of society in countries with non-democratic systems, including the creation of a model member of such a society. Administrative law and administration will be shown as a tool serving the current interests of the ruling power. The importance of the name and surname for shaping a person’s personality and strengthening his relationship with a specific group will be explained, and the consequences of changes in this area will be indicated. The article will also highlight and discuss two types of provisions of legal acts regulating the granting and changing of a name and surname. The former make it possible to separate the model members of the new society from its enemies and make it easier to identify and eliminate undesirable people (laws in force in the Third Reich). The second enables the creation of a homogeneous society through the forced assimilation of selected individuals (laws in force in People’s Poland aimed at de-Germanization). The article uses the legal-dogmatic method, consisting in the analysis and interpretation of the texts of legal acts, and the historical and legal method, taking into account the changes of the analyzed legal institution over the years. The work also takes into account the practice of applying the law in the researched area

Integracja nowych wrocławian przez film. Polish Cinema for Beginners — studium przypadku
The article presents the history of the project “Polish Cinema for Beginners”, which since 2012 has been introducing Polish films to foreigners living in Wrocław using the formula known from film societies. The aim of the text is to gather facts about the project, its idea, programme, creators, and its evolution, including the impact of the pandemic and the war in Ukraine on it. The article shows how the project, by popularising the history of Polish Cinema among newcomers in Wrocław and fostering integration in the international community and the urban life of the Lower Silesia’s capital, gained a high reputation among participants and influenced a more inclusive cultural landscape — not only of the city, but also of the country, pointing to the problem of linguistic exclusion in increasingly multicultural society in Poland
Narracja performatywna w „Czarnym słońcu” Jakuba Żulczyka — metalepsa i syndrom audiowizualny
This article focuses on the relationship between literature and audiovisual media. I examine how the author of Czarne słońce [Black Sun] uses elements of poetics taken from action movies and video games to increase the effect of literary immersion (the reader’s involvement in the presented world). The concept of this book is based on the performative influence on the reader, who experiences text in an almost physical way. The author also uses the figure of metalepsis, which enabled him to achieve the effect of breaking the framework of literature — infiltrating the textual world from outside and vice versa. The main point of this paper was to show the plasticity of literature and its ability to use the semiotic system of other media systems (films, video games). The use of imaging methods typical for audiovisual arts in this case allowed to adapt to the ways of influencing readers entangled in the culture of images and sounds.
The book becomes a heritage asset not only because of its content but also because of its physical form and provenience. A particular difficulty in preserving it for future generations is the moment when, pursuant to Article 6, paragraph 1 of the Constitution of the Republic of Poland of 1997, it should pass from private property to the public domain. The cases of three bibliophilic heritages allow us to show the consequences of insufficient state interest in them which arose for culture. On this basis, actions are presented that can prevent the repetition of such events in the future.Prawny aspekt dóbr kultury jako własności prywatnej. Losy zbiorów E. Zegadłowicza, G. Morcinka i J. Kuglina po ich śmierci. Casus zbiorów Ryszarda Ziemby. Wnioski i zalecenia chroniące pośmiertnie prywatne zbiory dóbr kultury
La traductologie canadienne : ancrage européen, tropisme anglo-américain
History and politics account for the development of Translation Studies in Canada. In 1969 when the Official Languages Act compels the Canadian government to communicate both in French and English to restore the rights of the francophone minority, translators are in short supply. Translation thus becomes an academic discipline. An inventory of Canadian books on translation published during the ensuing fifty years (1970–2020) brings to light two main stages in the evolution of translation research. During the first two decades (1970s–1980s), didactics and terminology development figure prominently. At the crossroads of European and American poststructuralist works, Canadian translation criticism emerged at the turn of the1990s. By setting itself in the descriptive, target-oriented paradigm (Tel Aviv-Louvain school of thought), it broke away from the hermeneutic-poetic paradigm epitomized by Meschonnic. Feeding upon French Theory (Bourdieu, Derrida, Foucault) and Cultural Studies (Bhabha, Spivak), the main underpinnings of American postcolonialist scholarship, it aggregated around cross-cultural objects of study, with the concept of translation now extending to the interaction of cultures. Sociological approaches to translation represent the second most important research area. Today, these approaches are superseded by new complex, interdisciplinary models. Attention is shifting towards espistemology while digital supports and new practices bring about new theoretical queries, new technological tools, and didactic models. Finally, with facts and figures in hand, we question the status of Translation Studies in French in a globalized editorial environment, where English reigns supreme
