The New Age Spiritual Life Narrative: New Wine in Old Wineskins?
This article sets out to discuss the structure of New Age spiritual memoir as distinct from the Christian spiritual memoir. I look at the notion of spiritual seekership which drives the plots of New Age spiritual memoirs, and the various patterns of seekership that have been identified. Seeing that the major structural difference between New Age and Christian spiritual memoirs lies in the number of turning points (several “awakenings” vs one conversion experience, respectively), I present the most common types of turning points featured in the studied texts (psychedelic-induced and non-dual awakenings, as well as energy-like somatic experiences). The above are illustrated by brief overviews of selected memoirs (by Stanislav Grof, Richard Alpert/Ram Dass, Tony Parsons, Richard Sylvester, and Suzanne Segal)
An Ecological Perspective on the Challenges in Language Education: Focus on Agency and Affordances
The article presents an overview of recent research trends from an ecological perspective, arguing that the ecological perspective can be most aptly used to describe current language education, characterized by dynamic and unpredictable changes. It delineates such topics as the spread of technology and out-of-school language learning, linguistically diverse classes, and teacher wellbeing. The notion of teacher agency is addressed, which can be critical in the perception of the challenges in education, i.e. whether they will be used as affordances to modify teaching or as a threat undermining the teacher’s professional identity. In conclusion, guidelines for current teacher education are provided
Is It All That Positive? An Exploratory Study of Emotions in the Older Adult In-Person and Online EFL Classrooms
Late-life foreign language education (i.e., FL geragogy, FLG) is said to be related to the de- lay of age-related cognitive changes in healthy individuals and has been shown to positively affect the quality of life of older adults, the fastest-growing age group worldwide. These are also the two main reasons which seem to be behind the high enrolment rates for FL courses at the Universities of the Third Age (U3A) and senior centres alike. Nowadays, following the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic and months spent in the emergency remote teaching, some of the older learners decided to continue their ed- ucation online, others came back to the classrooms. In both cases, the research on third age learner emotions remains rather scarce, despite a gradually increasing interest of applied linguists in this age group. The aim of this paper is thus to bridge the gap between FLG and Positive Language Education (Mercer et al.) by discerning the reasons behind the learners’ choice of in-person or online classes and investigating the emotions experienced in both modes. To this end, the qualitative research was conducted in two groups of older adult English as a FL learners in the in-class (n = 11) and online mode (n = 6). The data was collected via open-ended questionnaire and a thematic analysis of the dataset was done to identify patterns of meaning. The results indicate that although the emotions in both modes are similar, and learning English in later life is a source of pride, satisfaction, and self-fulfilment irrespective of the form of classes, the online experience is decidedly more negative and causes greater anxiety, frustration, and boredom. In addition, face-to-face social interaction seems to play a vital role in the learners’ overall perception of the course
Older Adult EFL Learners’ Readiness for Autonomous Language Learning
Learner-centred education has emphasized the significance of learner autonomy in language learning over the past forty years. Currently, the literature on the topic implies that cultural and educational environments affect autonomous learning perception and practice, therefore students’ readiness must be examined before creating autonomous learning activities. Given the scarcity of studies, the purpose of this research is to shed light on the issue of whether older adult learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) are ready for learner autonomy. To achieve this goal, the present study collected responses from sixty-five EFL learners, aged between sixty and eighty-six. The data were obtained through a questionnaire consisting of five sections: background information, views on teacher and student responsibilities, decision-making skills, motivation, and autonomous activities both within and outside the classroom. Furthermore, eight voluntary EFL learners participated in the follow-up interviews. The analysis involved utilizing descriptive statistics from the questionnaire replies, as well as interpreting the interview data. The findings revealed that Turkish older adult EFL learners exhibited a limited degree of readiness for autonomous language learn- ing, despite their notable levels of enthusiasm and eagerness to improve their English proficiency
Mickiewicz lingwistyczny
Olaf Krysowski’s book Mickiewicz i romantyczna filozofia języka [Mickiewicz and the Romantic Philosophy of Language] discusses various linguistic concepts that inspired Mickiewicz in his early works. The author uses creative linguistic ideas to interpret selected literary works of the poet, and also points out their Slavophilic determinants, proving that speech functions are the source of Romantic cognition and the mytholinguistic image of the Slavs.Książka Olafa Krysowskiego Mickiewicz i romantyczna filozofia języka poświęcona została omówieniu rozmaitych koncepcji językoznawczych, które inspirowały Mickiewicza w jego wczesnej twórczości. Autor wykorzystuje twórcze pomysły językoznawcze do interpretacji wybranych utworów literackich poety, wskazuje również ich słowianofilskie uwarunkowania, dowodząc, że funkcje mowy stanowią źródło romantycznego poznania oraz mitolingwistycznego obrazu Słowiańszczyzny

Noworoczny upominek u wstępu do roku królika, czyli Japonia w drukach Jana Kuglina
This article analyses two works — Dwa opowiadania noworoczne by Ihara Saikaku and Serce na wschód by Aleksander Janta-Połczyński, published at the end of the 1930s by Jan Kuglin, an outstanding typographer, lover of beautiful books and creator of many bibliophilic editions, who, at that time, ran the publishing house Rolnicza Drukarnia i Księgarnia Nakładowa in Poznań. In Kuglin’s ouvre, the two publications, strongly inspired by Japanese culture, form a coherent, yet unusual group of works. In my article I will try to answer the questions as to where this idea came from, what motivated the typographer when he decided to publish both texts in such an original way and whether it was really original at that time. Therefore I will discuss the two projects in detail, concentrating on the elements which give Kuglin’s prints a distinctively oriental character.

Beginning with Teun van Dijk’s studies, the notion of discourse is handled, but this concept is inscribed in the crossroads of problems related to power, oppression and context. The aim is to investigate some characteristic examples of Argentine public discourse from independence onwards (with such authors as E. Echeverría, D. F. Sarmiento or L. Mansilla), when religious arguments formed the background of the nationalist apologetic debate. The reasoning put forward in Argentine political speeches and press articles indicates that the context of “civilisation” required an indispensable basis in theology and the social sciences. In short, we see how the religious discourse underlies the debate that does not free itself from oppression. It will be interesting to discover the context of colonial Christianity in the La Plata River region in the way it argued the recently conquered freedom and the supposed ethical principles of the projected and imagined Argentinian national community.
