The main objective of the article is to indicate the impact of the pandemic on the Polish economy, with particular emphasis on businesses from the perspective of employees. The hypothesis is that the coronavirus pandemic negatively affected the functioning of the Polish economy. Taking up this topic is related to the various reactions of the government and European organizations to the emergence of a new threat and the significant role of health in the economy. This article is mainly empirical. The research was conducted using the method of standardized computer-assisted questionnaire interviews between March and April 2021. The questionnaire form was shared on social media in the student group and the group Accounting – my passion (in Polish Księgowość moja pasja). 120 entrepreneurs and employees (N=120) were surveyed. The negative impact of the coronavirus is perceived by almost all respondents and the mitigation instruments offered by the government are considered insufficient. It would be worthwhile to think about relief solutions in times of pandemic, the current opinion shows a negative perception of the measures introduced so far. The pandemic caused not only economic effects, but also affected many areas of people’s lives, resulting in a negative perception of reality. The functioning during the lockdown was limited to the necessary minimum, therefore the quality of life was rated as average. The main objective of the article is to indicate the impact of the pandemic on the Polish economy, with particular emphasis on businesses from the perspective of employees. Employees’ dynamic capabilities-based model of their perceived job security

    No full text
The article concerns the role of employees’ dynamic capabilities in boosting the perceived job security of employees in contemporary organizations. It is assumed that the fit between employees and their job (P-J fit) and employees and their supervisor (P-S fit) in mediating the influence of employees’ dynamic capabilities on perceived job security. Such a theoretical model is empirically verified based on the sample of 1,197 organizations operating in Poland, Italy, and the USA in 2021 when job security was crippled by COVID-19. The results confirm that employees’ dynamic capabilities remain crucial for boosting perceived job security and such relation is mediated by P-J fit and P-S fit.The article concerns the role of employees’ dynamic capabilities in boosting the perceived job security of employees in contemporary organizations. The market for sports and leisure services is constantly evolving. Polish consumers are more often interested in the offer of sports and leisure enterprises such as fitness clubs, water parks, gyms, or sports and leisure centres, recognising the importance of looking after their health and physical fitness. After a period of isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, physical activity is even more frequently regarded as fundamental to maintaining health and fitness, harmony and balance in life. Currently, all fitness-related activities are classified as leisure time mega trends (e.g. work-life balance). Modern technologies are another noticeable trend, which is beginning to accompany people in physical activity as well. They help streamline the service delivery process and apply a personalised approach to the customer. We are not just talking about today’s most popular social media, apps and activity monitoring devices. QR codes, geolocation, gamification, sports coaching, and others can be applied in business practice. The objective of the article was to show the specifics of the sports and leisure industry, characterise the dominant technological solutions and identify the opportunities they can provide for sports and leisure businesses. It was assumed that modern technologies could be complementary and successfully used both to promote physical activity itself and to build the commitment of buyers of services provided by such companies. The research used qualitative and quantitative methods, as well as literature analysis. As the analysis of the survey results and observation of the market has shown, modern technologies motivate participants of physical activity, while sports and leisure companies are beginning to recognise their advantages in promoting their services. The article emphasises the complementarity of solutions and their comprehensiveness, as well as possible implications in the service activity of sports and leisure enterprises. The result of the analysis is a proposal for a set of useful features and solutions dedicated to companies providing sports and leisure services. By applying the proposed solutions, these companies can become more innovative, while their customers will be more satisfied. The market for sports and leisure services is constantly evolving. Ekonomia dnia zagłady. Przemoc kolonialna, katastrofa ekologiczna i palenie opon w Palestynie

    No full text
The article analyzes the Palestinian act of tire burning at the intersection of the following frameworks – colonial violence, racial capitalism, and environmental discourse. The analysis considers the many functions of Palestinian tire burning: capital accumulation, waste management, protestors’ protection, counter-violence, pollution redistribution, and spectacle production. This analysis leads to the argument that Palestinian tire burning takes part in a “Doomsday Economy.” The article promotes the concept of a “Doomsday Economy” as a frame for understanding violence toward Palestinians and the contemporary intent of tire burning. The Doomsday Economy is a violent economic structure that involves two interplaying processes: (a) the positioning of a discursive catastrophe in a deferred future by colonial powers in order to conceal the present violence and production of a daily doomsday for the oppressed; and (b) the oppressed’s acceleration of the future-doomsday’s arrival for all participants of this economy – through pollution and images – introducing doomsday as a present state.

„Historia naturalis curiosa Regni Poloniæ, Magni Ducatus Lituaniæ, annexarumque provinciarum, in tractatus XX divisa” z 1721 roku

Gabriel Rzączyński’s Historia naturalis curiosa, composed of twenty treatises, published in 1721 in Sandomierz, has been a source of information about the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth (Res Publica Utriusque Nationis) for many years, and one of the most extensive attempts to characterize the natural environment of the country. It also contains information on historical events that involved the natural world and the state of knowledge and medical practice in Poland and Lithuania. Historia has also been the subject of many secondary studies and historiographical analyses, but has not yet been translated into its author’s native language. A concise description of its content and a discussion of its importance for academic reflection are intended as an encouragement to translate the opus into the languages of the nationalities that formed the state at that time.Gabriel Rzączyński’s Historia naturalis curiosa, composed of twenty treatises, published in 1721 in Sandomierz, has been a source of information about the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth (Res Publica Utriusque Nationis) for many years, and one of the most extensive attempts to characterize the natural environment of the country. Presented here is a translation of four poems by the Northumbrian monk Alcuin, advisor to Charlemagne, forming a mini-corpus which depicts the author as a teacher and creator of the educational and moral reform program of the reborn Roman Empire. The commentary points to the reception of Greco-Roman antiquity — especially the topics — and the attempts at remolding the material in the Christian spirit.Presented here is a translation of four poems by the Northumbrian monk Alcuin, advisor to Charlemagne, forming a mini-corpus which depicts the author as a teacher and creator of the educational and moral reform program of the reborn Roman Empire. „Czu d[er] towfil”. Jeszcze o Poliptyku Zwiastowania z Jednorożcem z wrocławskiego kościoła św. Elżbiety, jego fundacji i twórcach

The article discusses the circumstances of the commissioning and execution of an altarpiece for the St. Elisabeth’s Church in Wroclaw, identified with the Annunciation with the Unicorn Polyptych, on the basis of assumptions formulated in the previous literature on the subject. Basing on archival records in the form of accounts kept during the fundraising, the author attempts to reconstruct the chronology and method of financing the commission and to identify those involved in the undertaking. In order to complete the picture of the processes accompanying collective commissions, the conclusions of this analysis are juxtaposed with the results of research on contracts for the creation of altar retables from the second half of the 15th c., preserved in Silesia. The question of the identity of the group of founders, whose anonymous images were placed on one of the painted sections of the retable, and the question of the ideological function of their anonymous collective portrait are also addressed. The article discusses the circumstances of the commissioning and execution of an altarpiece for the St. Elisabeth’s Church in Wroclaw, identified with the Annunciation with the Unicorn Polyptych, on the basis of assumptions formulated in the previous literature on the subject. Uniwersum „Fallouta” w kontekście „atomic culture”

    No full text
The Fallout universe is an adaptive remix of themes that characterise the so-called (American) atomic culture. The creators of the universe have been developing it for years by entering into a dialogue with American pop-culture. Fallout’s storyworld is retro-futuristic and retrotopian in nature, a critique of the American Dream and a pessimistic diagnosis. Rebuilding civilization will not be possible because the negative aspects of human nature prevail over the nobler instincts. The apocalypse presented in this way is also a reflection — on a macroscale — of the universally understood ‘evil,’ which expresses itself — on a microscale — in ordinary human interactions. So the ultimate product of civilization — the actual ‘atomic legacy’ — will be mutations, aberrations, anarchy and barbarism

The Mode of Being of Popular Literature in the 20th Century

    No full text
The article is devoted to the functioning of literature (and, more broadly, cultural texts) in popular circulation and the transformation of their role in the 20th century. The starting point for the analysis is the link between commercialisation (as an immanent feature of the ‘lowbrow’ circulation) and the artistic quality of the output that is part of it. The examples of the phenomena under discussion come from different linguistic milieux. This highlights the transnational nature of popular works, which feature invariant solutions to plots. In these two contradictory yet simultaneous tendencies can be observed: schematisation and de-schematisation, which renews conventionalised solutions. The author also emphasises the role of English-language works in the creation of figures of the collective imagination. Their presence in the minds of readers and the transformations they undergo with the development of industrial society and urbanisation processes can be traced from the late 19th century to the 1990s. That is why the 20th century — a period of intense expansion of popular culture — is a cohesive cultural entity with distinguishable individual periods. They are usually associated with socio-political crises, with stories becoming a cultural response to them and, at the same time, their artistic reception in the imaginarium communis. In addition, this is a time of technological progress, significantly affecting the distribution and media-based mediation of cultural texts in popular circulation. Literature has ceased to be a ‘separate phenomenon’ in it, hence the need to look at it as a part of a larger whole, with which it enters into various relationships. The domination of English-language output during the analysed period is associated with the global hegemony of the Anglo-American entertainment model. At the same time — in the works available to Polish-speaking readers — its ‘over-presence’ stems from the appearance after 1989 of a large number of translations, which have significantly influenced domestic pop-culture; moreover, their popularity in the reality of the free market economy has been determined by the read- ers themselves with their purchasing choices. It is hard to speak in this situation of the existence of national models of popular culture, although undeniably there are authors who dominate the local publishing markets. And yet they, too, exist in the context of the global pop culture industry
