The semantic categories WE and THEY in the discourse of Polish mothers on the Internet
The author analyzes mothers’ statements in selected Facebook discussion groups to investigate the categories WE and THEY in the mothers’ discourse on the Internet. The aim of the article is to analyze the collective identity of mothers – how they perceive themselves, how they perceive their social environment, who belongs to the mothers’ close and distant social context, and when THEY become hostile. The data analyzed, primarily includes texts in which the personal pronouns referring to the semantic categories WE and THEY (my ‘we’, nas ‘us’, oni ‘they’, ich ‘them’) appear. The analysis of the data from the two discussion groups has shown that there is no single distinct discourse of mothers but multiple discourses in which various factors, such as the group characteristics and the members’ interests, have an impact on their worldview and child rearing
Word and non-word of the year. Linguistic usage as a reflection of socio-political processes
The Society for the German Language (GfdS) in Wiesbaden has been selecting the word of the year since 1971. The first “winner” in the surveys was the adjective aufmüpfig (‘rebellious’), followed in second and third place by the nouns Junktim and Umweltschutz (‘environmental protection’). 20 years later, the ‘non-word’ of the year was added to the list. The list of non-words was opened in 1991 by the adjective ausländerfrei (‘free of foreigners’). The announcement of the selected terms has since become a public event with far-reaching resonance and sometimes controversial discussions (keyword: ‘semantic battles’). In this article, the author places the topic in the context of linguistic research and describes the socio-economic and day-to-day political background that largely determines the respective selection of words and non-words. Several examples are used to focus on the influence of socio-political circumstances on the use of language (such as the fall of the Berlin Wall and reunification, migration and xenophobia, Russia’s war against Ukraine as a turning point)
Narzędzia i zasoby cyfrowe w perspektywie glottodydaktyki polonistycznej
The paper concerns issues at the intersection of didactics and digital humanities. Its aim is to reflect on the role of digital tools and resources used in Polish language glottodidactics. The text attempts to classify them generally as teaching aids serving specific educational purposes. The results of a survey conducted among students and graduates of Polish Philology as a Foreign Language (at the Faculty of Humanities of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń) are also presented. They show what digital tools and resources are used in teaching and learning Polish as a foreign language at the university level, as well as whether they can influence students’ motivation to learn Polish and serve to develop language competences
Kody polityki naukowej w myśli decydentów reformujących system nauki i szkolnictwa wyższego w Polsce
The purpose of this article is to reconstruct the basic cognitive codes underlying the political activities related to the reforms of the science and higher education system in Poland from 2007 to 2023. I argue that regardless of the political affiliation of the minister in charge of this department, the activated codes had identical provenance and stemmed from specific structural conditions, including the fetishization of scientometrics, the culture of imitation characterizing the periphery’s attitude towards the center, and the apologia of the New Public Management. I analyze the legal acts and their justifications, the statements of ministers, and the social media debate on the reforms
Idealizacja i dewaluacja Tadeusza Kościuszki, polskiego bohatera narodowego, w kreowaniu rzeczywistości politycznej
This study presents how political entities of various provenance, with the help of a historical figure and related events, tried to shape political reality through the instrumental use of the model of the Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko for political activities and implementation of various political goals. The chronological reconstruction of the process of idealization and devaluation of Tadeusz Kościuszko illustrates the durability of the forms of celebration and, at the same time, the interpretative capacity of this national hero over the centuries. It also confirms the durability of the cult of the national hero and reformer
„Twój awatar, twój wybór” — tożsamość użytkownika aplikacji randkowych w Metawersum
The purpose of this article is to reconstruct the meaning of identity of the users of Metaverse dating applications. The analysis of their communication is embedded in the postmodern theories of Zygmunt Bauman and Anthony Giddens. The conclusions presented in the article are based on critical discourse analysis, which used texts taken from the websites of the aforementioned platforms as research material. The study shows that identity appears in them mainly in the context of constructing it on a visual level and manifesting it through an avatar. An additional important aspect influencing it is the virtual implementation of lifestyles and established relationships.
Hobbes bez Schmitta. Suwerenność, prawa człowieka a porównawcza teologia polityczna
The paper is a contribution to discussions about prospects of reaffirmation of the ontological-political interpretation of Hobbes’s thought advised in the mid-twentieth century by Leo Strauss and C.B. Macpherson. The paper begins with an outline of the main avenues and lines of contention and division within contemporary Hobbes studies, constituted as examples of the “definitive rejection” of Strauss’s and Macpherson’s interpretations. In the second part, there are discussed some issues in detail that help us to define the meaning of the political ontology in Hobbes’s thought as determined by the pair of oppositions “juridical (negative) power” — “ontological-generative (positive) power”. In the third and fourth parts there are considered two main aspects and implications of the Hobbesian theory of sovereignty, as well as the current debates around it (launched mainly as a result of inspiration by Carl Schmitt’s reading of the theory): firstly, the doctrine of an exception/state of emergency in relation to the idea of citizenship and human rights, and, secondly, metaphysical-political and theological-political, justifications of the “monistic” authority of the absolute power juxtaposed against a pluralist and democratic (republican), and at the same time a-secular and cross-religious-comparative considerations of sovereignty of the “people” (as a “multitude”). As a result of the proposed analyzes and reflections, the religious and theological foundations (considered through comparative studies on the doctrines and traditions of three monotheistic religions) are highlighted for questioning the “essentialist” approach to the “fetishism” of sovereignty in the most influential doctrines from Schmitt to Morgenthau and Hinsley
Вацлав Серошевский — исследователь якутской общины
The research on the Yakut community, which is the subject of my article on Wacław Sieroszewski (1858–1945), is closely related to his stay — as an exile — in Siberia in the 1880s and early 1890s. Polish literature of the 19th century was dominated by the image of Siberia as a land of suffering, a place of exile for thousands of Poles. Sieroszewski wanted to show his compatriots a different, unknown face of this land, especially its eastern part — Yakutia. This prompted him to successively acquaint himself with the Yakuts as well as their geographical, natural and socio-cultural living environment. Yakutia and the Yakuts became the subject of many-sided studies of the Polish exile — scientifically reliable, extremely suggestive and artistic, and at the same time unmarred by sentimentality or pathos. They resulted in literary works, scientific articles published in Russian magazines and a comprehensive, one-of-a-kind monograph on the Yakut community. The first print of Sieroszewski’s book in 1896 was a scientific event of world importance. The great scientific value and importance of the publication was evidenced, among other things, by the fact that the author was awarded the gold medal of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society, and after some efforts he was allowed to return to his homeland.

Public health challenges in the context of the influx of refugees from Ukraine to Poland
The new geopolitical situation connected Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has put the Polish healthcare system in front of a huge challenge and the necessity to quickly take and implement strategic decisions aimed at providing the best possible healthcare for refugees without harming the Polish society. Objective: The main objective of the article is to present selected challenges of public health resulting from the influx of refugees to Poland. Materials and methods: the research part used a review of the current Polish literature containing information on the influx of refugees to Poland, Google Scholar, and PubMed scientific databases, as well as statistical data from the Central Statistical Office (CSO). Results: public health, despite many difficulties related to the lack of medical documentation, the threat to the health security of the Polish population, the excessive burden on the state budget, and problems with the implementation of Ukrainian specialists, developed and consistently implemented health strategies with the involvement of private health care. The reforms implemented by the Polish government, aimed at adapting to the new reality, have contributed to the provision of the necessary and specialized health services for refugees, without adversely affecting access to medical care for Polish citizens. Conclusions: The changes introduced by the Polish government, which contributed to the adaptation of the healthcare system to new challenges, such as providing support to refugees, were analyzed. The results of the analysis show that these modifications made it possible to provide the necessary and specialized health services for this group, without affecting the accessibility of healthcare for Polish citizens. The study suggests that such an approach can provide an effective model for adapting to contemporary migration challenges while meeting the needs of refugees and ensuring access to healthcare for the local community
