No full textThe issue of the scope of criminalization under Article 256 of the Polish Penal Code is important in the age of a rise in popularity of totalitarian ideologies. Currently, this proviso contains three basic types of prohibited acts, which themselves are multi-variate and complex. The article offers an analysis of selected features, primarily new ones, introduced by the amendment of July 7, 2022, or those that have so far received less attention. These include subjective premises. All types contain feature pertaining to motivation, which means that, as a rule, they can only be committed intentionally with direct or direct intention. The provision of Article 256 PCC still raises some controversy and will probably be subject to further amendments by the legislator

No full textThe article delves into the interpretive and practical challenges arising from the incorporation of the term “ideology” within the Polish Penal Code, along with the introduction of a novel criminal offense pertaining to the dissemination of Nazi, communist, fascist ideologies, or ideologies that incite the use of violence for the purpose of influencing political or social life. Primarily, it will elucidate the complexities that may confront criminal courts and the involved parties when confronted with the necessity of applying the amended legal provisions. Subsequently, an effort will be undertaken to provide a structured exposition of the historical development of political and legal doctrines. This historical context may serve to ameliorate some of the uncertainties, or potentially serve as a persuasive element within legal proceedings. The article adopts a multifaceted approach, encompassing a dogmatic analysis, a linguistic examination, and a comparative legal methodology. The analysis culminates in the inference that the aforementioned amendment fails to introduce lucid and precisely defined concepts into the Penal Code, thereby contravening the fundamental legal principle of definiteness within criminal law provision

No full textThe purpose of this article was to look at film culture in Lower Silesia in 1970 and the starting point was the brochure ‘XXV years of cinematography of Lower Silesia’. The plans indicated in the brochure were confronted with their realization, for which aim the Lower Silesian press and archival records were analyzed. Since the brochure presents actions that fit into the ideological and cultural agenda, the article also takes a closer look at the activities of cinemas at that time, which indicate that the viewers preferred Western films and disliked Soviet films the most
Between commemoration and ideologization: Battles of the Polish Legions in the East Carpathians in Polish literature of the interwar period
No full textThe article provides a critical analysis of representations of the Eastern Carpathians present in the interwar Polish literature, as a space marked by memory of the legionary battles during the Great War.
Alongside the image of the Hutsul Region as a space of idyllic nature or a civilizing mission calculated to integrate the mountainous borderland with the rest of the modern state, the interwar Polish literature brought an image of the region as a unique place on the historical level for Poles. Interwar Polish writers presented the Eastern Carpathians as a prominent place on maps of the legionary combat routes, and thus as existing with special rights in the Polish national memory. Additionally, they portrayed Poles in military entourage and the Hutsuls as their helpers in the fight for Poland’s independence, and then for maintaining Polish order on the South-Eastern outskirts of the country. This way of presenting the Hutsul region and the Hutsuls in the Polish dominant discourse of the interwar period (especially literary discourse) was greatly influenced by the war events that took place in 1914–1915. The 2nd and 3rd Infantry Regiments of the Legions fought then in the Eastern Carpathians against the Russians. Literary representations and reminiscences of legionary battles in the region and cooperation of (some) Hutsuls with the legionnaires had primarily a commemorative function. But not exclusively. They also served to bring the Hutsuls closer to the Polish nation and to distinguish them from the Ukrainian nation, as well as to symbolically appropriate the Hutsul region to the needs of the Second Polish Republic. The article sheds light on both the commemorative and ideologizing aspects of the literature devoted to the battles in the Eastern Carpathians and their legionary and Hutsul protagonists

No full textThe “Declaration of the letter of the Kraków Voivode, delivered among the people in Stężyca”, the authorship of which is attributed to Szczęsny Kryski, states the following: “If you so chastise Machiavel’s teachings that one ought to reign judiciously, I do not know if it will please you should the noble-born rise up against the king and the peasants against the noble-born, and, having slaughtered the noble-born, the peasants themselves should rule, as had unfolded in Holland; for such ‘Regestra’ were left by William to Maurice”. The passage refers to William I of Orange and the Dutch Revolt (1568–1648). During this insurrection, an armed conflict broke out between the Protestant population of the Low Countries and Spain. The conflict was widely considered as a religious war. In my article, I will analyse why Szczęsny Kryski, in the “Declaration of the letter of the Kraków Voivode, delivered among the people in Stężyca” (approx. 1606–1607), alluded to the Eighty Years’ War and William I of Orange, referring to Niccolò Machiavelli. I will also show why this Dutch Revolt was generally condemned in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth

No full textThis article discusses guides to drawing and painting produced by the publishing house Arkady in Warsaw between 2010 and 2022. This kind of books has not been analysed before. The described guides are niche products on the Polish publishing market — the ones published by Arkady are characterised by exceptional editorial work and narrow, specialised topics. This article presents selected, representative guides. The analysis of their form and content, in which the bibliographic method and the method of the analysis and criticism of literature are employed, allows us to draw a few interesting conclusions. The manuals published by Arkady are editorially consistent and have their own individual graphic design, distinguishing them from other publications of this type. The analysis has been extended to include conclusions regarding the potential recipients of such editions. The impact of the online activities undertaken by the authors of these guides on the publishing outcome has been also taken into account.Poradnik jako typ książki. Wydawnictwo „Arkady”.
