Managing Biological Risks in Biomedical laboratories of Public Hospitals in Athens, Greece, based on the Biosafety requirements
Objectives: The aim of the present study was to review the laboratory workers’ perception on the biological risks in Biomedical laboratories of Public Hospitals in Athens, Greece, to evaluate how they are managing the biological materials and to propose mitigation measures according to the existing risk, the local legislations and the international Biosafety guidelines.
Materials and Methods: The study was designed as a cross-sectional study with a detailed health and safety (H&S) questionnaire focused on biosafety and biorisk management. A total of 36 biomedical laboratories Biosafety Level-2 in 20 public hospitals were assessed for their biosafety containment and compliance with biosafety practices. Laboratory staff (medical laboratory doctors, medical laboratory technologists, laboratory assistants, biologists and biochemists) (n = 415) completed the questionnaire.
Results: The results showed, that a significant percentage of laboratories lacked proper management of the biological agents and biological materials in general, thus more specific: restricted access 48.9%, controlled and independent ventilation 36.6%, use of BSCs 31.8%, biorisk management system in place 31.6%, risk assessments 28.4%, biosafety manuals 21.4%, SOPs 35.9%, assigned biosafety officers 10.8%, occupational Doctor 34.9%, accidents reporting 25.5%, emergencies plan 34.2% and biosafety training programs 28.2%.
Conclusion: There are marked deficiencies in containment and administrative controls, as well as in the implementation of the Greek and EU biosafety legislation. This emphasize the urgency of addressing critical gaps in biosafety and in emergency preparedness in Greek biomedical laboratories. Therefore a Biorisk Management System, risk assessments, SOPs, assignment of a Biosafety Officer, staff trainings and emergency response plans should be developed, applied and enforced, in compliance with the local and European legislation and guidelines
Intra-abdominal metastasis after pelvic primary Synovial Sarcoma resection: case report
Introduction: Synovial sarcoma is a malignant soft tissue sarcoma. It occurs predominantly in young adults. 90% of synovial sarcomas occur in the extremities, they have been reported in other sites, including abdomen and pelvis. Up to 40% of all patients with soft tissue sarcomas develop distant metastasis, despite adequate local disease control.
Aim of the article: To provide an update on one of the rarest and most aggressive tumors, to affirm the importance of early management and especially surveillance, and to encourage the codification and the management of these tumors.
Presentation of cases: Here, we discuss a case of a 78-year-old female patient, operated 10 years earlier for a pelvic Synovial sarcoma, who presented with intra-abdominal mass to our hospital that eventually turned out to be a metastatic intra-abdominal synovial sarcoma following biopsy.
Conclusion: It is important to be aware that primary intraabdominal tumors can occur and delayed metastasis is more typical of synovial sarcoma than of many other sarcomas and should be considered in determining the appropriate frequency and duration of follow-up imaging
Indoor air quality in selected school buildings in the Central Sector of Athens at the Attica’s Region and potential Health Risks
Aims and scope: Indoor air pollution is considered as an important environmental risk factor for health. Indoor air quality in schools is very important, as students and teachers spend most of their day (30%) indoors and consequently are more exposed to indoor pollution than outdoor air pollution. The present study has the aim to investigate the indoor air quality (IAQ) in school buildings in the Central Sector of Athens at the Attica’s Region and record physical parameters and concentration levels of indoor air pollutants that are associated with comfort, health and safety conditions inside the classrooms. Methods: The indoor air quality research was conducted in forty-seven (47) classrooms in a total of twenty-six (26) school buildings in the Central Sector of Athens at the Attica’s Region, during the period from March 2022 to May 2023. The air pollutants Carbon dioxide (CO2), Carbon monoxide (CO), Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC’s), Nitrogen dioxide (NO2), Particulate matters PM (PM10, PM2.5) and physical parameters such as temperature (T) and relative humidity (RH) were monitored by the series 500 Portable Air Quality Monitor AeroQual, during (1) teaching hour per day in each classroom. During the samplings some windows and doors were opened, due to measures and recommendations for health and safety for students and teachers against COVID-19. Findings: The overall mean concentrations of the main parameters recorded inside the schools were 0,136 ppm CO, 823,38 ppm CO2, 12,07 ppm VOC’S, 0,006 ppm NO2, 38,1 μg/m3 PM10 and 15,4 μg/m3 PM2.5. The mean recorder temperature was 24,52 oC, and relative humidity was 45,78%. In this study a total number of twenty- two (22) classrooms (46,8%) of schools at the Attica’s Region had no comfort temperatures for students. In all cases indoor CO concentrations were below the 50 ppm, guideline set by WHO. Eight (8) of the forty-seven classrooms in the Region of Attica (17%) had a CO2 concentration more than 1000ppm. VOC’s exceeded the limit value of 0,8ppm indoors in all schools (100%). There was statistically difference for CO, CO2, ΝΟ2 (p<0,001), for VOC’s (p=0,004) and for PM10 (p=0,028) between indoor and ambient air. Conclusion: The indoor air quality of the classrooms was influenced by the outdoor air, the location of school, the number of windows that were opened during the lesson, the number of students inside the classroom, the activities, furnishing and school equipment. No comfort conditions in classrooms and exceeded limits of indoor air pollutants can lead to diminished IAQ and thereby harmful effects on students. A well airing of the classrooms during the lessons and breaks is necessary for a better air quality. Ventilation is one of the most important factors affecting indoor air quality, diluting the exposure agents originating from indoors
Evidence of komatiitic basalt enclaves in the Téra-Ayorou pluton (Liptako, West Niger) (West African Craton)
The present study focuses on the basic enclaves (amphibolo-pyroxenites) of the Téra-Ayorou pluton in Niger Liptako (NE portion of the Man Ridge of the West African Craton). The methodology used includes field observations, supported by polarizing microscope observations of thin sections and geochemical analyses of whole rock. These enclaves are characterized by high MgO, low Na2O, K2O, and TiO2 contents, high CaO/Al2O3 ratios, depletion of light rare earth and enrichment in Ni and Cr. These basic enclaves are thought to come from certain basic to ultrabasic Pogwa and Ladanka plutonites in the Diagorou-Darbani greenstone belt, with which they share the same geochemical characteristics. This suggests that these enclaves were ripped out by the pluton as it was being emplaced. The basic enclaves and basic plutonites with ultrabasites have different signatures from those of the birimian basites of the West African Craton, which are tholeiitic and calc-alkaline. The amphibolo-pyroxenite enclaves of the Téra-Ayorou pluton and the basic to ultrabasic plutonites of the Diagorou-Darbani greenstone belt constitute a fairly continuous line of komatiitic rocks from peridotites (serpentinites) to basalts (metapyroxenites, amphibolites). This komatiitic lineage results from the fractional crystallization of a magmatic liquid from a mantle source with variable partial melting rates. The komatiitic line and the tholeiiti
Frequently, the concept of circulatory system is difficult to understand since it brings together other biological concepts such as nutrition and respiration. This study aims to determine whether students in the third year of middle school manage to understand this concept at the end of the module, and to highlight the main challenges related to the teaching-learning of blood circulation in middle school as well as to describe all the ideas and obstacles encountered by the students involved. This is an exploratory and descriptive study. Our population is made up of 100 middle school students. Our results reveal that learners have acquisition problems to varying degrees. Thus, the percentages of difficulties encountered, in establishing the distinction between veins and arteries (86%), the opening or closing of the blood circuit model (64%), as well as the conception of the heart as a pump or as a double pump (64%), the organs and functions of the circulatory system as well as the components of the circulatory system (32%). In fact, many students interviewed neglect the response to the risks that threaten the circulatory system. The confusion between the circulatory system and the respiratory system has finally been observed. It is also essential to emphasize all the ideas and obstacles encountered by students in order to improve the quality of acquisition of the concepts of blood circulation
As an extraordinary judicial procedure, revision aims to ask the judge, in limited cases, to re-examine a final decision, which has become res judicata, due to new elements. In the course of the trial, the guarantees of independence and impartiality promote the proper application of the law and the fairness of judicial proceedings. Those guarantees help the judge to handle contentious cases without any influence and interference from external forces. While accomplishing its mission, the judge must examine all the contentious aspects, both in form and in substance. However, the Supreme Court’s proceeding doesn’t allow the analysis of the admissibility of the appeal for review. The judge's competence to review the full jurisdiction is called into question by articles 163 and 171 of the Supreme Court’s law. These articles convey an injunction which obliges to judge on the merits without analyzing the conditions of admissibility. According to the international case law, this inconsistency calls into question the quality of court at this supreme jurisdiction by preventing it from exercising effective judicial control. According to the advances of the international case law in the framework of a fair trial, it seems more than essential for Burundian positive law to move towards a "culture of separation of powers" by entrusting the mission to dispense justice only to the courts and tribunals, by promoting the procedural and institutional guarantees contained in the Constitution and in the international instruments ratified by Burundi

Liver disease can be a major threat to public health. In Africa, the situation is more complex due to contamination by hepatitis B and C viruses. In Côte d'Ivoire, the prevalence of hepatitis is 12% for viral hepatitis B and 5% for viral hepatitis C. Medical treatment is one of the major challenges in overcoming them. However, the high cost of treatment offered by modern medicine forces most patients to turn to traditional medicine. It is therefore necessary to explore the plant world in search of medicinal plants that could provide a significant therapeutic alternative. The aim of this study is to inventory the medicinal plants used in the traditional treatment of hepatitis in Bengassou in the Bocanda department (central-eastern Côte d'Ivoire). Ethnobotanical surveys were carried out in this locality among 23 traditional practitioners, using a questionnaire. In this study, three liver pathologies were identified: jaundice, hepatitis and cirrhosis. Forty-four (44) plant species were listed, along with their modes of use. Leaves (76%), the most widely used part of the plant, are commonly prepared as a decoction (82%). The oral route (50%) remains the preferred method for administering remedies. Investigations into the involvement of medicinal plants in recipes to treat these ailments showed that Alchornea cordifolia (Cpr= 17.65%), Costus afer (Cpr= 11.76%), Morinda lucida (Cpr= 11.76%), Newbouldia leavis (Cpr= 11.76%) and Vernonia colorata (Cpr= 11.76%) are used in most medicinal preparations. According to these results, the plants listed could be useful in combating certain liver disorders, particularly hepatitis, cirrhosis and jaundice
Condom use in HIV-serodiscordant couples is an effective and widely recommended prevention strategy, complementing other prevention methods. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and factors associated with regular condom use among serodiscordant couples, and to describe the reasons for adopting or not adopting this behavior. It was carried out at care sites in the city of Parakou, in northeastern Benin. It was a mixed quantitative and qualitative multicenter cross-sectional study. Participants meeting the inclusion criteria were recruited over a 7-month period from August 2022 to February 2023. Based on non-probability sampling for convenience, quantitative socio-demographic, economic, behavioral and background data were collected using a questionnaire. As for the qualitative component, the aim was to collect the perceptions and motivations of the respondents, for descriptive purposes, in order to clarify the data collected by the quantitative survey. Data were analyzed and processed using SPSS 25 software. The significance level was set at 5%. Logistic regression was used to identify associated factors. After transcription, qualitative data were subjected to thematic content analysis. Regular condom use concerned less than 5% of respondents (4.68%). In this population of regular condom users, young people (71.43%) and women (85.71%) were the most represented. Most of them (71.43%) had a secondary education or higher, had an income of less than 50,000 CFA francs (64.28%), were married (85.71%) and polygamous in 57.14% of cases. Nearly 29% of subjects who systematically used condoms in their relationship tested positive for hepatitis B, and 21.43% showed poor compliance with ART. Factors associated with regular condom use were: Persons living with HIV's attitude to the disease (p = 0.039) and clinical stage of infection (p = 0.007). Factors facilitating regular condom use were: habitual condom use prior to positive testing, insistent recommendations from health workers, free condoms, healthy communication about HIV within the couple, and threats from HIV-negative spouses. As for the barriers found, these were: failure to share serostatus with the partner, bad perception of condom use in a stable couple, denial of the disease or trivialization of the risk of transmission, and the need to prove love and trust to the partner. Public awareness campaigns are needed to improve the general perception of condom use within couples
