Commuting is an integral part of daily life and can have a significant impact on subjective well-being (SWB). Studies on the link between commuting and subjective well-being are contradictory, hence the need for a systematic synthesis of existing data. In accordance with PRISMA principles, this systematic review aims to examine the relationships between commuting characteristics and the different components of subjective well-being. We selected only peer-reviewed literature analyzing the effects of travel time, mode of transport, and distance on the different components of subjective well-being: cognitive, affective, and eudaimonic. We selected studies published between 2010 and 2023 in Scopus, Google Scholar, and PubMed. In accordance with Kmet et al. (2004), an assessment of methodological quality and inclusion criteria resulted in a total of 32 studies. The results of the study show that long commutes (>80 km/day) and long distances traveled decrease life satisfaction and increase levels of negative emotions related to commuting. While public transport and cars are generally perceived negatively due to fatigue, delays, congestion and distance constraints, active modes of transport (walking, cycling) promote well-being
The Melipona beecheii is a stingless bee native to Mexico that is exploited on a smaller scale than Apis mellifera. The objective was to identify innovations in the M. beecheii honey chain among beekeepers in southeastern Mexico, in the Usumacinta Canyon Flora and Fauna Protection Area. The methodology of the EC0818 competency standard was used: chain mapping, analysis of production processes, identification of innovation and design of an innovation management strategy. It was found that the honey market is mainly localized, focused on self-consumption, with limited marketing; Artisanal production focuses on one harvest per year. However, in the local market, the price of melipona honey is 20 times higher than that of A. mellifera; hence the importance of improving the quality of the chain to meet the characteristics that the target market requires. In addition, the growing demand for natural products increases the opportunity for their commercialization as an ingredient in cosmetics through digital platforms. One strategy is to organize producers into associations to have access to sources of financing that allow them to improve the quality of production, introduce innovations, improve distribution channels, and venture into tourist activities related to bee farming
The present study examines the relationship between parental educational styles, self-esteem and drug addiction among adolescent patients at the Côte d'Ivoire Blue Cross Center. To this end, 35 participants, male and female, aged 17 to 19, having used drugs at least during the last 12 months, were selected using medical consultation files. Then, questionnaires from Coopersmith's self-esteem scale (1984) and Robinson & al's (2001) parenting style scale were administered to them in order to identify the level of self-esteem and the parenting style to which each of them was subject. Finally, the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST-10) questionnaire was administered for the diagnosis of addictions. The chi-square analysis carried out on the data collected suggests a simple and interactive relationship between democratic parenting style, high self-esteem and addictive behaviors related to drugs among adolescents in Abidjan compared to permissive parenting style and low self-esteem. These results fall within the perspective of the attachment theories of Bowlby (1988), psychosocial theories of Peele (1985), and psychological models of addictions. This study, with the aim of providing an explanation of drug addiction in relation to the social context and the intrinsic characteristics of adolescents, could contribute to raising parent’s awareness of the use of stimulating educational practices for the optimal development of their children and thus keeping them away from practices likely to cause them harm
In a world of digital revolution, schools are increasingly forced to adopt technological innovations to develop learners' skills. However, the promotion of educational technologies in areas where many schools lack subsequent resources is a real challenge. This article aims to study the influence of the pedagogical integration of information and communications technologies (ICT) on the development of digital competencies of learners in rural areas. A quantitative methodological approach was used to operationalize this objective. The theoretical framework based on Vygotsky's social constructivist theory (1985) helped to contextualize our research and interpret the results obtained. A questionnaire was distributed to 95 participants. The data collected were analyzed using a simple linear regression test performed with the software Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS.20.1). The results reveal that the use of empowering tools, the practice of gamification and the use of startups in learning develop learners' digital competencies. Despite the challenges in this domain, the prospects for integrating ICT into education in rural areas are promising. The study suggests that, by drawing on the principles of socio-constructivist theory fostering a collaborative learning culture, it is possible to turn these challenges into opportunities for developing learners' digital skills
This study is based on data collected in two portions of the Sassandra River: the lake at Buyo and the river at Guessabo. These bodies of water are exploited by artisanal fishermen. Biological data were collected on catches in the commercial fishery, complemented by data from six sampling campaigns. An ichthometer, electronic scale and GPS for the coordinates of the fishing areas were used. This approach has provided insight into the environmental stress these fish are experiencing with respect to the Biomass Abundance Index (ABC) values. In terms of diversity, 46 species have been identified, belonging to 11 orders and 17 families, with a dominance of Perciformes, Siluriformes, Characiformes and Osteoglossiformes. The lake portion showed greater abundance (7312 individuals), but less well organized populations, while the river portion showed reduced abundance of diversity (1943 individuals), with better organization. In the sampling period (June 2020-December 2022), Syndontis koensis (886 individuals) and Sarotherodon melanotheron (258 individuals) were the most abundant in the lake and river regions, respectively. The results reveal environmental stress on these populations
Modeling Site Suitability and Capacity for Small Hydropower Generation in Edo State, Southern Nigeria
The study evaluates the suitability of sites for small hydropower (SHP) development in Edo State, Nigeria, as a renewable energy source. The assessment integrates Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques with hydrogeological and remote sensing data, including precipitation, stream order, geology, slope, land use/land cover, and soil texture. A Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) approach, specifically the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), was used to rank potential SHP sites based on their suitability for hydropower generation. The analysis identified three highly suitable locations for SHP development. The estimated gross annual energy outputs for these sites were 5.8 MW, 5.65 MW, and 6.1 MW, respectively. These findings indicate significant potential for SHP as a sustainable energy solution in the region. However, further considerations-such as the specific hydropower yield, the river course location, environmental sustainability, socio-cultural factors, and compliance with government policies-are crucial for successful development. The study underscores the importance of SHP in enhancing electrification efforts while promoting environmentally friendly and sustainable energy generation
Water Safety and Hygienic Practices of Formal and Informal Food Outlets in Malawi
Access to potable water is one of the most important aspects of ensuring consumer safety in food production. Interventions to improve the quality of drinking water and ensuring hygienic practices provide significant benefits to health. However, the monitoring of water quality and maintaining good hygiene remains a challenge in public food outlets where contamination of water may cause the outbreak of disease. The study aimed at assessing the water safety and hygienic practices of formal and informal food outlets in Malawi Community-based cross-sectional study design was conducted in Nkhotakota district, Malawi. A stratified random sampling technique was adopted to select 384 participating food outlets to assess water safety and hygiene practices. Data were collected through interviews and observational checklists. The study revealed that 31% (n = 384) of the food outlets had poor hygienic practices and half of the food handlers in the food outlets (50%, n = 376) had no knowledge of water contaminations. Furthermore, it was found that 96.6% of the food outlets (n = 384) use untreated water. Based on the findings, it was concluded that water being used was not safe for drinking due to poor hygiene and lack of knowledge by food handlers. Due to poor hygiene and lack of knowledge by food handlers, the study recommends widening the scope of policies in food outlets to provide special periodic orientation sessions to food handlers on sanitation and hygiene followed by evaluation in their respective food outlets. Food outlet owners should take responsibility for ensuring that hygienic conditions are followed at their business premises
