The aim of this study was to determine the anti-anaemic effects of aqueous extracts of Syzygium guineense (Myrtaceae) leaves, used in traditional medicine for the treatment of anaemia. Phytochemical screening of the aqueous extract of Syzygium guineense leaves revealed the presence of sterols, polyterpenes, polyphenols, catechic tannins, alkaloids, quinones, and saponosides. A study of the acute toxicity of the aqueous extract of Syzygium guineense leaves in female mice gave an estimate, in accordance with Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development 423 guidelines, of the 50% lethal dose. The results show that administration of the aqueous extract of leaves of Syzygium guineense at a dose of 2000 mg/kg body weight, then at a dose of 5000 mg/kg body weight, did not cause any mortality in the animals. This shows that the aqueous extract of Syzygium guineense leaves is not toxic by the oral route. Anaemia was induced in Wistar rats by oral administration of phenylhydrazine hydrochloride. Oral administration of Syzygium guineense aqueous extract at doses of 200, 1000 and 2000 mg/kg body weight to anaemic rats resulted in normalisation of red blood cell levels, haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit level, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration and mean corpuscular haemoglobin content similar to the anti-anaemic action of Ranferon® (70 mg/kg body weight). These results show that the metabolites revealed in this extract could be responsible for its anaemic effects. This could justify the use of this plant in the treatment of anaemia
Introduction: Road accidents are the leading cause of death among children and young people aged between five and 29. Compared with scourges such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and diarrhoeal diseases combined, road traffic injuries claim more victims, especially in low-income countries. The aim of this study was to review the epidemiology of road traffic injury-related deaths in hospitals. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiological, sociodemographic and lesion-related aspects of deaths related to road traffic injuries in a referral hospital in Burkina Faso. Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive study with retrospective data collection covering the period from 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2024. It focused on deaths related to road traffic injuries in the Orthopaedics-Traumatology Department of the Yalgado Ouédraogo University Hospital. Results: From 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2024, the orthopaedics-traumatology department recorded 175 cases of in-hospital death among the 10,235 admissions for road traffic injuries, representing a case-fatality rate of 1.7%. One hundred and seventy-two (172) cases met our inclusion criteria. The series comprised 145 men and 27 women. The mean age of the deceased was 41.5 years, with extremes of 5 and 85 years. Patients who died as a result of road traffic injuries on Saturdays accounted for 25.6% of the series (n=44) and on Sundays 22.7% (n=39), i.e. 48.3% during the weekend. The 6pm to midnight period accounted for 50.6% of fatal accidents (n=87). Motorcyclists were the victims in 79.1% of cases. Collisions between motorcyclists and car drivers accounted for 50.58% of fatalities. Public and private sector employees accounted for 32.6% of the series. The average admission time was 4.7 ± 8.85 hours. The victims who died suffered head injuries in 78.5% of cases (n = 135). In 98.5% of cases, the motorcyclist victims were not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. Death occurred during hospitalisation in 71.5% of cases, while 31 patients (18%) arrived already dead and 18 patients died on arrival (10.5%). The average length of hospitalisation for patients who arrived alive (n = 141) was 25.2 hours, with extremes of 12 minutes and 17 days. All 141 patients who arrived alive received medical treatment, 115 also received orthopaedic treatment, and 113 received surgical treatment, representing 65.31% of cases of post-operative death. Conclusion: Although road accidents are a major cause of morbidity and mortality, specific data on the deaths they cause remain poorly documented in our context. Our study reveals a high in-hospital mortality rate from road traffic injuries in Burkina Faso, mainly affecting young men, in this case, motorcyclists not wearing helmets. The injuries are multifaceted, but the clinical picture is almost always that of a polytrauma. This study highlights the urgent need to reinforce road safety measures, in particular the wearing of helmets, and to improve the management of serious cases. These results call for targeted prevention policies and more effective emergency systems
This study was conducted from January 2023 to January 2024 in four fishponds in the Centre region, with the main objective of evaluating the diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates in relation to the physicochemical quality of these fishponds. Sampling of benthic macroinvertebrates followed a multi-habitat approach, using a square kick net measuring 30 cm on each side with a 400 µm mesh opening. The collected organisms were fixed in 10% formalin contained in glass vials. In the laboratory, specimens were washed with running water, then preserved in 70% alcohol before identification and counting operations. Physicochemical analyses showed that the waters were low in oxygen (O2 = 31.72 ± 19.75%), weakly mineralized (120.08 ± 28.61 µS/cm), and had a slightly basic pH (pH = 7.37 ± 0.40 UC). These low values are indicative of organic pollution in these aquatic environments. These values suggest that these waters are generally of poor quality and are likely to cause stress and potential losses for aquatic organisms. During this study, faunal analysis allowed for the inventory of 9140 individuals belonging to 3 phyla (Mollusca, Annelida, and Arthropoda), 3 classes (Gastropoda, Insecta, and Achates), 8 orders, and 32 families. The Mollusca phylum accounted for 7344 individuals, representing 80.35% relative abundance, followed by Arthropoda with 1795 individuals, or 19.63% relative abundance, and finally Annelida with 1 individual, or 0.01% relative abundance. The Mollusca phylum was dominant with a relative abundance of 80.35%. The dominance of this phylum indicates their pollution resistance and that the ponds are impacted by organic pollution. High values of the Shannon and Weaver diversity index (3.25 bits/ind.) and Pielou's Evenness (0.60) over time showed ecological balance in the MBK1 fishpond, indicating the good ecological health of this fishpond. Conversely, low values of these diversity indices Shannon and Weaver (0.37 bits/ind.) and Pielou's Evenness (0.44) over time showed an imbalance in the YDE1 fishpond, favoring the development of a single family, the Thiaridae family. Analysis of the Organic Pollution Index (OPI) values showed that the waters of the studied fishponds are subject to high pollution, suggesting poor biological quality
The Mediating Role of Engagement and Culture in the Relationship Between Paternalism, Organizational Identification and Voice Behavior
This study investigates the mediating effects of work engagement and organizational culture in the relationship between paternalistic leadership, organizational identification, and voice behavior within the context of Jordanian industrial shareholding companies. The research sample was drawn from a population of 3,612 managers occupying top and mid-level positions across 239 companies, as listed by the Jordanian Ministry of Industry and Trade. For the purposes of this research, large firms were classified as those with a workforce of 500 employees or more. A stratified random sampling technique was adopted to enhance sample representativeness, resulting in a calculated minimum sample size of 347 respondents. From the 400 questionnaires distributed, 347 were returned, of which 318 were deemed suitable for statistical analysis, corresponding to a valid response rate of 79.5%. A quantitative research design was employed, utilizing Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) through SmartPLS software to test the hypothesized relationships. The results revealed that paternalistic leadership has a significant and direct positive effect on both organizational identification and voice behavior. Similarly, organizational culture demonstrated a substantial positive influence on these outcomes. Moreover, work engagement was found to be positively correlated with organizational identification and voice behavior. Importantly, the analysis confirmed the mediating roles of both organizational culture and work engagement. Specifically, organizational culture mediated the relationship between paternalistic leadership and both organizational identification and voice behavior. Additionally, work engagement served as a mediator in the relationship between paternalistic leadership and these two dependent variables. These results highlight the pivotal role of internal organizational dynamics - namely culture and employee engagement - in strengthening leadership effectiveness and fostering constructive employee behavior in industrial organizations operating in Jordan
Complexity of Electronic Marketing towards Performance of Gas Energy Companies in Tanzania: Insight from Innovation Diffusion Theory
The purpose of this study was to investigate the complexity of electronic marketing on the performance of gas energy companies in Tanzania with insight from Innovation Diffusion Theory. Data were gathered using a structured questionnaire sent to a convenience sample of 302 employees from Gas Company Tanzania Ltd, Taifa Gas Ltd, Lake Gas Ltd, Oryx Gas Ltd, and Pan African Energy Ltd. The study used an explanatory research design. Structural equation modelling was applied to data analysis to find the causal link between company performance and the complexity of electronic marketing. Results revealed quite a strong positive correlation between company performance measures and the complexity of electronic marketing. These results advise businesses in the gas sector to give training programme investments top priority in order to improve the simplicity of learning and application of electronic marketing tools. Organisations should also make sure staff can access structured learning opportunities and user-friendly systems. Reducing the entrance barrier for staff by means of simplified tool interfaces and consistent training can help to maximise their output in using electronic marketing solutions. Gas businesses should also concentrate on developing internal knowledge and encouraging a culture of appreciation for the advantages of electronic marketing.
Echoes of Silence: Postcolonial Feminist Voices in Hosseini’s And The Mountains Echoed
This paper examines the silenced yet resonant voices of Afghan women in Khaled Hosseini’s And the Mountains Echoed (2013) through the lens of postcolonial feminist theory. By foregrounding both diasporic and localised female experiences, the article interrogates how gendered silence are inscribed, resisted, and reimagined within the novel’s multinational and multigenerational narrative. Drawing on the works of C. T. Mohanty, G. C. Spivak, and D. Kandiyoti, the study explores the interplay between patriarchal structures, cultural memory, and geopolitical displacement. It argues that Hosseini’s portrayal of female characters somehow creates a textured tapestry of various levels of resistance - from silent to rebellious, deferred agency, and challenging dominant monolithic representations of Afghan womanhood

Objective: To assess the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its clinical impact among patients with rheumatic diseases in Chad. Methods: A retrospective, cross-sectional, analytical study was conducted at the (HRT) Rheumatology Department from January 2018 to May 2024. Among 5000 patients, 330 fulfilled IDF and 214 WHO criteria for MS. Clinical, laboratory, and therapeutic data, as well as functional scores (SF-36, DAS28, BASFI, WOMAC), were systematically analyzed. Results: MS prevalence was 6.6% (IDF) and 4.3% (WHO). The cohort was predominantly female (88.7%), with a mean age of 49.8 ± 12.4 years. The most frequent components were abdominal obesity (93.0%), hypertension (89.7%), and hyperglycemia (64.8%). Associated diseases included connective tissue disorders (40.9%), degenerative conditions (34.3%), and autoinflammatory diseases (24.8%). After a mean two-year follow-up, functional and quality-of-life scores improved, although 13 patients developed cardio-renal complications. Conclusions: MS is common among rheumatology patients in Chad and worsens disease prognosis. Systematic screening and multidisciplinary management are essential to improve outcomes and quality of life
New advances in UAV technology and data processing capabilities have made it possible to obtain high resolution images and three-dimensional (3D) data that can be used to assess tree attributes. This study was conducted at Widou thiengoly in the Ferlo locality, northern Senegal, with the overall objective of applying a photogrammetric approach for measuring stem density (stems/ha) with UAV images. A tree approach method based on a digital height model of a 10-hectare study area was implemented, which was constructed from UAV images. From this, the performance of the individual tree detection algorithm was evaluated. For each plot, the number of trees was counted manually using the drone-derived ortho-mosaic as a reference. A total of 92 reference trees were counted in this study and the algorithm detected 75 trees, giving an accuracy of over 90% (F-score of 0.93). Overall, the algorithm missed 10 trees (omission errors) and falsely detected 3 trees (commission errors), giving a total count of 88 trees. This study suggests that the local maxima filtering algorithm combined with optimal window sizes, applied on a photogrammetrically constructed Digital Height Model is capable of performing tree counts with acceptable accuracy (F > 0.90) in the Sahelian zone
Shaping the Shift: Unpacking Uncertainties in change management for service delivery of Selected Commercial Banks in Nairobi City County, Kenya
Due to evolving technologies, the banking industry faces increased pressure to meet corporate objectives, enhance productivity and profitability, control operational costs, reduce waste, and improve service delivery. Prolonged inadequate service delivery could be the reason behind the declining customer numbers and performance of Kenyan commercial banks, which have remained unchanged for the past five years. The primary goal of this study was to examine how various change management approaches affect service delivery at selected commercial banks in Nairobi City County, Kenya. This study aimed to examine a sample of commercial banks in Nairobi City County, Kenya, to find out how different methods affected their service delivery. These methods include leadership strategy, stakeholder participation strategy, communication strategy and planning strategy. The study was guided by three theories: stakeholder theory, path-goal leadership theory, and service quality theory. This study used a descriptive research design. The unit of observation consisted of the seven commercial banks in Kenya, together with the 314 individuals employed by these banks in the areas of finance, credit, marketing, and risk management. The approach of simple random sampling was used by the researcher to choose the respondents from each stratum. The total number of individuals sampled in the study was 176. To find out whether the questionnaires are reliable, comprehensive and easy to understand, a pilot test was carried out on 18 bank managers at SBM Bank. The investigation instrument's ultimate dependability was determined using Cronbach's alpha, which fell between the range of 0.7 and 1. Following the completion of the descriptive statistical analysis, tables were generated that displayed the frequency, mean, percentage, and standard deviation distributions. To assess the relationships and the impact of each independent variable on change management strategy, multiple linear regression was employed. The results indicated a strong positive significant correlation between leadership strategy, stakeholder engagement strategy, communication strategy, planning strategy and service delivery. The study concludes that effective leadership strategies enhance employee satisfaction and engagement, leading to improved service delivery, engaging customers through feedback mechanisms, surveys, and focus groups allows banks to understand their needs and preferences, effective communication strategies foster better engagement with customers, allowing banks to understand their needs and preferences and planning strategy aids in the optimal allocation of resources, including human, financial, and technological resources. The study recommends that banks should develop systems for collecting and analysing customer feedback to understand their needs and expectations. The banks should regularly gather feedback from customers, employees, and other stakeholders to understand their needs and expectations. The banks should recognize the various stakeholders involved, including customers, employees, regulators, and community members. The banks should conduct regular surveys and focus groups to understand customer needs, preferences, and pain points
In recent years, there has been growing interest in using plants for the prevention and treatment of cancer, due to their rich variety of phytochemical constituents and limited side effects. This study focused on a medicinal plant species from the Ivorian flora to evaluate its cytotoxic potential on two cancer cell lines. Cytotoxicity was assessed using the MTS assay (tetrazolium [3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl) -5-(3 carboxymethoxyphenyl) -2-(4-sulfophenyl) -2H-tetrazolium]) on the prostate cancer cell line PC3 and the breast cancer cell line MCF-7, with doxorubicin used as the positive control for cell death. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH and ABTS assays, with ascorbic acid and gallic acid as respective standards. The best cytotoxic activity was observed on the PC3 cell line (IC50 = 17.79 ± 0.09 µg/mL). However, the antioxidant activity of this extract (IC50 = 13.97 ± 0.9 µg/mL in the DPPH assay and 66.77 ± 0.9 µg/mL in the ABTS assay) is less notable than that of the controls (IC50 of 7.09 ± 0.3 µg/mL for ascorbic acid and 21.47 ± 0.4 µg/mL for gallic acid). Nevertheless, Mezoneuron benthamianum demonstrated strong efficacy against PC3 cells, a cell line derived from prostate cancer. This plant could potentially lead to the discovery of new anticancer molecules that may be used in prostate cancer therapy
