The economy of Burkina Faso is characterized by a predominance of the informal sector and precarious employment. This study explores the factors influencing underemployment in Burkina Faso, focusing on the root causes of this phenomenon, particularly the informal structure of the economy, as well as potential strategies to address it. The data used come from the Integrated Regional Survey on Employment and the Informal Sector (ERI-ESI), conducted from March to June 2018, and cover a sample of 13,885 households across the 13 regions of Burkina Faso. Given the binary nature of the variable of interest, a logistic regression model was used. The results reveal that the underemployment rate stands at 23.16%, with a higher rate in the informal sector (23.32%) compared to the formal sector (16.52%). Factors influencing this phenomenon include place of residence, socio-professional category, level of education, type of employment, and gender. Being a woman increases the risk of underemployment by 2.16 times. These results highlight the urgency of implementing targeted interventions for women, promoting off-season activities, and strengthening awareness campaigns to improve workers' access to information, particularly for women, in the labor market
Alternative to the right-hand rule: Farah’s method
Right-hand rule (RHR), the conventional tool to establish directions of magnetic field and force in electromagnetism, is hard to use because it involves hand motions and three-dimensional visualisation. This paper presents an alternative approach, called Farah's Method, using rotation of Cartesian coordinate axes rather than hand movements, so students can learn it more easily and with less mental burden, as the proposed method is based on the rotation between the axes.. A challenge encountered in this study was the lack of available resources addressing an alternative approach to the right/left-hand rules. In a quasi-experimental study involving 60 secondary school students, we compared Farah's Method to the RHR through pre- and post-tests with conceptual and problem-solving activities, as shown in Figures 11-13. Under the Farah's Method condition, there were significantly improved post-test scores (80.47% vs. 61.27%, p < 0.001), better problem-solving accuracy (87.63% vs. 66.87%), shorter response latencies (35.87 s vs. 53.12 s), and lower self-reported cognitive load (overall rating: 4.31 vs. 3.70). These results draw attention to the method's capacity to simplify vector analysis into concise, significant aspects and foster conceptual understanding. This method is also compatible with learning technologies such as PhET simulations and virtual reality interfaces, where coordinate rotations can be dynamically visualised, making it easier to implement in digital learning environments. This approach has future uses in STEM fields such as mechanics and engineering and offers an accessible, scalable pedagogy for overcoming spatial reasoning obstacles. The research implies that Farah's Method is preferable to the RHR with excellent prospects for revolutionising electromagnetism teaching via technology-enhanced learning
In the lowlands of the Sudanian climate of Burkina Faso, low crop productivity due to inadequate knowledge of the intrinsic characteristics of soils is a crucial problem. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of soil diversity and topographical position on the combined efficiency of microbial activity and the carbon cycle. The study was carried out in the Lofing lowland (south-west of Burkina Faso). A morpho-pedological characterisation of the study area according to the French system (and its correspondent according to WRB, 2015) revealed eutrophic Brown soils (Vertic Cambisols), covering 56.29% of the lowland. The second type concerns hydromorphic soils with low humus content (haplic Gleysols) covering 40.85% of the lowland. The results of analyses of subsurface soil samples (0-10 cm) showed higher values for total carbon (+29%) and mineralisable carbon (+22%), metabolic quotient (+29%) and microbial respiration (+36%) in hydromorphic soils compared with brown soils. On the other hand, it was in brown soils that microbial biomass and yield were greater (+22% and +69%, respectively). This study shows that the labile fraction of carbon and the activity of soil microorganisms are strongly influenced by colluvial organic inputs and topography. Thus, the interaction between soil type and topography is a key factor in assessing the soil organic carbon cycle in the lowlands of Sudanian climate of Burkina Faso

Supply Chain Resilience: The Role of Total Quality Management on the Performance of Kenya Medical Supplies Authority
Managers are empowered to improve the quality of services and products by incorporating key total quality management principles. However, the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) has faced scrutiny due to inefficiencies, which are hindering access to essential healthcare services. This aims to assess the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority's performance in the application of the four Total Quality Management principles. These are fact-based decisions, process-centric approaches, relationship management, and employee engagement. The study is grounded in four theoretical foundations: resource-based view, dynamic capabilities, stakeholder theories, and Deming’s theory of quality management. A descriptive research design was used. The target population was 330 employees; however, a sample of 181 respondents was selected using proportionate stratified and simple random sampling techniques. Structured questionnaires were used to collect data, which was analyzed quantitatively using both descriptive and regression analysis, and SPSS version 25 was used to aid the data analysis. The findings indicate that the independent variables explain 58.5% of variables in the dependent variable, that is, the performance of KEMSA. Fact-based decisions had the highest impact and positive correlation with performance (B = 0.372, t = 5.239), followed by employee engagement (B = 0.348, t = 4.640), process-centric approach (B = 0.319, t = 4.691), and relationship management (B = 0.257, t = 3.134 all at p<0.01. The findings point to the importance of continuous staff training, participatory leadership, and integrated data systems to enhance performance. Additionally, the study recommends mentorship for junior staff, regular assessment of all resources, and a supportive organizational culture that sustains quality improvements

The implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) represents a major step toward the continent’s economic integration. However, its potential effects are likely to vary significantly depending on the structural characteristics of the member countries. In particular, the countries of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (WAEMU), although united by a common currency and regional institutions, display considerable heterogeneity in terms of productive specialization, levels of industrialization, and commercial absorption capacity. In this context, this article aims to analyze the differentiated effects of the AfCFTA on WAEMU economies through a simulation using the SMART partial equilibrium model integrated into the World Bank’s WITS platform. The objective is twofold: to identify the sectors and products most sensitive to intra-African tariff liberalization, and to highlight the structural disparities likely to shape those effects. This study builds on recent work on the impacts of trade liberalization in Africa (Wonyra et al., 2020; Bayale et al., 2020), while adopting a comparative intra-regional approach. The choice of the SMART model is justified by its ability to generate detailed, disaggregated results and to incorporate the trade preferences specific to each country analyzed
Banana Bunchy Top Virus (BBTV) is one of the most destructive viruses affecting banana plants, causing Banana Bunchy Top Disease (BBTD). It causes significant economic losses and poses a threat to food security in several regions of the world. This literature review provides an overview of the current state of knowledge on BBTV. BBTV belongs to the Nanoviridae family, genus Babuvirus. It consists of single-stranded DNA made up of 6 to 10 DNA molecules, each encoding a protein that plays an important role in the functioning of the virus. The six components of the BBTV genome are called DNA-R, DNA-N, DNA-S, DNA, DNA-M, DNA-C, and DNA-U3. It affects all parts of the banana tree, particularly the leaves, pseudostem, and suckers, causing dwarfism of the plant, dark green streaks, and leaves that stand upright like a bouquet of flowers. It can cause losses of up to 80 to 100% of banana production. BBTV is transmitted mainly by an aphid, Pentalonia nigronervosa, which transmits the virus persistently and circulantly. It belongs to the order Homoptera, the family Aphididae, and the genus Pentalonia. Its main host is Musa spp., although other plants such as Enset may also be affected. It spreads mainly through aphids and conventional planting material, particularly bulbs and suckers, which contribute to the spread of the disease. BBTV can be detected by various techniques such as visual observation, serological methods (ELISA), and molecular methods using PCR amplification techniques, LAMP, and RCA. BBTV spreads rapidly in areas where its vector is present and where infected suckers are exchanged between farmers. Favorable climatic conditions, such as humidity and high temperatures, accelerate the spread of the virus. The virus is present in nearly 53 countries worldwide. Its incidence is 38% in Africa, 32% in Asia, 28% in Oceania, and 2% in the Americas. There are two main phylogenetic groups: the Pacific-Indian Ocean (PIO) group and the Southeast Asia (SEA) group. The various BBTV isolates show more than 85% homology. All isolates from Africa are grouped at the POI level. Genetic diversity influences the virulence and spread of the virus. To protect banana crops, BBTV management measures can be implemented at several levels. These management strategies are based on (1) the elimination of infected plants to prevent spread; (2) the use of healthy, certified plant material; (3) control of the aphid vector, particularly with insecticides or biological methods; (4) research into resistant varieties through genetic selection or biotechnology. In Gabon, the presence of BBTV poses a growing threat to banana production. Few in-depth studies have been conducted, but those that have been carried out have revealed the presence of the virus in eight of the nine provinces. Efforts are needed to better map its presence, raise awareness among producers, and implement appropriate control measures

Highly present within the Docker community of the Autonomous Port of Abidjan, associative actors constitute a relevant lever for analyzing urban dynamics linked to the migration of workers from rural areas. This study aims to understand the motivations and processes that lead certain migrant dockers to form ethnically-based associations, despite the existence of a federation meant to represent the entire profession. It employs a qualitative approach based on content analysis of semi-structured interviews. The survey, conducted from March to May 2024, focused on three associations: the Burkinabè Dockers Association, the Malian Dockers Association, and the Dockers Association from the West of Côte d’Ivoire. The results reveal that these ethnic associations are structured around three main logics: the valorization of cultural identities, the preservation of ties with the villages of origin, and solidarity among members. These structures thus appear as mechanisms of mutual support, as well as actors of personal and collective development in an urban context
