The present study, conducted in the commune of Cocody, aimed to improve knowledge of the urban flora of the area. The methodology consisted of a bibliographic synthesis of floristic lists from previous studies combined with a transect survey. The results revealed the presence of three plant formations, namely: the botanical garden of the National Center for Floristics, the botanical garden of the National Center for Agronomic Research, and the botanical garden of the Biosciences Training and Research Unit of Félix Houphouët-Boigny University. The results indicated the presence of 602 species distributed across 415 genera grouped into 96 families, with a strong representation of the Fabaceae. This flora is dominated by microphanerophytes and is mainly composed of species from the Guineo-Congolian (GC) zone, with 338 species accounting for 56.15%. The flora is rich in 122 species with special status, including 84 endemic species. Thirty-six species are listed on the IUCN Red List, and 24 rare and/or threatened species of the Ivorian flora were recorded. Regarding the mode of dissemination of diaspores, zoochorous species were predominant, followed by anemochorous, autochorous, and hydrochorous species. All these factors highlight the floristic diversity of the studied flora

While the nature offers a diversity of traditional food, the current situation of food insecurity is alarming in various homesteads in the Goma city (eastern DR Congo). There are preliminary surveys describing the attachment of the urban community to traditional food items in Goma. The above knowledge gap motivated this survey study. Therefore, the goal of this study survey was to identify the types of traditional food traded/consumed in this town and the drivers (factors) influencing current trend in the consumption of traditional food in urban environment. The study survey was composed of a sample of 13 producers, 52 sellers and 126 consumers who were randomly selected from the entire urban population of consumers/sellers met during interviews. The results indicated that, a variety of traditional food was produced, traded and consumed by local inhabitants from different historical/family background. Most of these traditional food types were of plant origin (55.60%) as compared to animal (33.30%) and fungal (11.10%) origins. About 40.10% of traditional foods were consumed 3 times per week per household. There was a seasonal variability in price of different food types. Consumption behaviors varied according to wealth status and to cultural background. Two categories of traditional food were used as food or medicine. The list of animal-based food types included honey (90.00%), animal skins (73.30%), guinea pig (52.90%), grasshoppers (50.80%), termite (38.70%) and insect caterpillars (13.06%). The list of plant based traditional foods included mushroom (72.80%), wild eggplant (66.40%), leaves of taro (62.80%), gourd pulp and seeds (58.60%), nightshade or green (55.00%), sunflower (54.40%), yams (50.80%), plantain/banana flour (47.60%) and maize/sorghum-based porridges. As compared to producers, the study revealed that consumers/venders had high ability to process/store traditional foods recently collected in the field/nature wild or home-gardens (p=0.024, χ2 test). As compared to sellers/marketers, the key driver of the choice of food items by a given producer/consumer was the consumer's financial-cultural back ground(statute) (p = 0.011, χ2 test). Aged respondents wanted to shop more food stuffs collected in the wild than from home-gardens.  Overall, the level of consumption of traditional food was found to be low in Goma as compared to reports from other urban cities of DR Congo and Sub-Sahara Africa. In future, there is an urgent need for an awareness campaign to be conducted after detailed studies are conducted for the nutritional values, toxicity risks that can be associated to health of consumers of traditional/wild foods. Obviously traditional food types have the potential to contribute in the improvement of the nutritional quality and welfare of consumers of urban and rural households. For producers/collectors/ harvesters, traditional food is likely contributing to the increase of household income, livelihood and wellbeing of users. As nutritional-sensitive products, they have the potential to increase women financial baskets as these are frequently involved in trading traditional foods in Africa

    Get PDF
Burnout is a common phenomenon in many modern-day organizations. The literature, however, shows that burnout is more pronounced in nurses relative to other categories of healthcare workers.  Unfortunately, there is a dearth in the literature on how organization development interventions can help reduce burn out in nurses. This paper accordingly attempts to examine the ways job redesigns can be appropriated as typologies of organization development interventions, the overarching goal being to propose dimension-specific interventions of job redesigns that can subsequently be empirically tested as predictors in studies, towards understanding of how to reduce burnout experiences in nurses in their everyday undertaking of caregiving

    Get PDF
Business creation in Mexico is crucial for economic development and job creation. However, the lack of entrepreneurial culture among university students represents an obstacle to this process. This research aimed to evaluate attitudes and perceptions toward entrepreneurship among students at a public higher education institution. A structured questionnaire was administered to a representative sample of six educational programs, considering variables such as creativity, self-confidence, family support, tolerance for failure, and entrepreneurial motivation. The results reveal that only 10% of students have a high entrepreneurial culture, while 49% are at a medium level and 40% at a low level. The predominant intention to start a business is occasional, with low participation in projects, which demonstrates a gap between favorable attitudes and entrepreneurial action. The main constraints are a lack of financial resources, fear of failure, and sporadically manifested creativity. It is concluded that there is entrepreneurial potential in students, but it needs to be strengthened through comprehensive university programs that promote not only technical skills but also personal empowerment, institutional support, and a supportive family environment. This will allow entrepreneurial intentions to be transformed into viable projects with a social and economic impact for the region

The accessibility of public transportation for elderly people in Poland's rural and peri-urban regions represents a pressing concern, particularly in light of the nation's aging demographic and the growing phenomenon of transport exclusion. This study delves into the myriad challenges faced by seniors in accessing reliable transportation, emphasizing the detrimental consequences of limited mobility, such as heightened social isolation and diminished access to essential services. The paper scrutinizes the underlying causes of transport exclusion, including the curtailment of bus and rail services, inadequacies in stop infrastructure, and vehicle fleets that fail to accommodate the needs of the elderly. Through an in-depth case study of the Konin Agglomeration, the disparities in accessibility are brought to the forefront, underscoring the imperative for systemic modernization of transport networks. Proposed solutions, such as the implementation of demand-responsive transport systems and comprehensive infrastructure enhancements, are explored as avenues to mitigate these issues. The article posits that by adopting integrated strategies and prioritizing accessibility, policymakers can significantly enhance the mobility and social inclusion of elderly citizens. Such measures not only improve the quality of life for this vulnerable population but also contribute to the broader goals of sustainable transport development and societal cohesion

The Sasanian Simorgh and Its Reflections in Islamic and Byzantine Art

    Get PDF
The Simorgh, a prominent composite creature in ancient Iranian mythology and art, achieved its most stylized and symbolic form during the Sasanian period. A mythological hybrid with canine or leonine heads, eagle wings, scaled bodies, and peacock-like tails, it became a key motif in Sasanian luxury arts. This study introduces a new typology of the Sasanian Simorgh based on a comparative formal analysis of its visual variations in silk textiles, silverware, and architectural ornamentation. Four main morphological groups are identified, each defined by distinctive tail structures and compositional elements. Employing Panofsky’s iconological method in conjunction with the theories of Hans Belting and Michael Baxandall on visual transmission, the research explores how the Simorgh motif was recontextualized in Islamic and Byzantine art. The findings demonstrate how the proposed typology enhances our understanding of the Simorgh’s visual transmission across cultural and temporal boundaries, revealing consistent patterns of adaptation and transformation in Islamic and Byzantine art. This typological framework thus contributes to broader discussions on image circulation, visual hybridity, and cultural exchange in Late Antique and Byzantine visual cultures

    Get PDF
The present work is concerned with assessing the quality of the English language in official reports published by the Italian Higher Health Institute and released through its website during the COVID-19 pandemic. The reports are the result of a translation from Italian into English, on which a quantitative analysis was carried out to assess the total number of errors, as well as their accuracy, adequacy, and readability. A qualitative evaluation was also undertaken focusing on the cohesive, lexical, and syntactic features of the reports, thus highlighting mistranslations. The quantitative analysis, carried out using the TAUS DQF system, evidenced a mean accuracy of 3 and a mean adequacy of 2. The Grammarly software counted a mean number of 109 errors. The Flesch-Kincaid readability tests, calculated using the Content Analysis SEO Tool, yielded a mean reading ease of 38 and a mean school grade of 8. The publication of official health reports addressed to the general public should be committed to improving lives and increasing the social impact of science. On the other hand, official health reports that are aimed at a specialized medical audience should respond to all the rules and norms of that specific language community. In both cases, the reports assessed in the present investigation seem to fail in their communicative function due to their linguistic ineffectiveness
