Influence of School Climate on Teachers’ Turnover Intention in Public and Private Primary Schools, Ikeja City, Lagos, Nigeria

    Get PDF
Teacher career turnover is a serious global occupational hazard, with the estimated teacher turnover rate ranging from 13 to 15% annually. Even countries with the best educational systems are not insulated in this regard. There cannot be actual turnover without turnover intentions, which are a key precursor. Being a multilevel structured phenomenon, several school variables could be implicated, such as school climate and job satisfaction. The Nigerian education system is portrayed as an environment where turnover intention thrives. Due to the dearth of literature on this regard in Lagos state, Nigeria, this research work utilized a survey research design to study the phenomenon in public and private primary schools. A total of 373 teachers were sampled using a simple random technique, and data was collected through a structured questionnaire. Appropriate descriptive and inferential statistics, such as Pearson product moment correlations, simple linear regression, and Independent t-tests, were used to analyze the data. The findings revealed that there was a moderate negative significant influence of school climate of public and private primary schools’ teachers on turnover intention. This means as school climate improves, the turnover intention goes down. School climate measures (safety, academic climate, community climate and organizational environment) jointly influenced teachers' thinking of quitting their current job. There was a significant difference between public and private primary schools’ teachers’ turnover intentions.  The study concluded that school type (public or private primary schools’ climate) has a significant, moderating effect on teachers’ turnover intention.  Teachers’ turnover intention was higher in private schools. It is recommended that public and private primary schools in Ikeja City should intentionally improve school climate by improving safety, academic climate, community climate, and organizational environment to reduce teacher turnover intention

Mehmet Rauf's Novel September: One of the first novels written under the influence of Western literature and its critical analysis

    Get PDF
The scientific article aims to analyze the factors provoking betrayal and the origin of remorse and to present psychological portraits of the characters in Mehmed Rauf's acclaimed novel "September", which is considered the first psychological novel in Turkish literature of the Serveti-i-Funun period. The article applies the method of content analysis and critical study of the scientific literature related to the novel itself and the analysis of new tendencies in Turkish literature. Based directly on the novel's text, the article studies the reasons and the source of betrayal, its impact on the characters, and the tormenting feelings caused by remorse. New psychological motives that appear in the novel "September" could be considered as an original phenomenon in Turkish literature in the period around 1900; Though the end of the novel is tragic, the characters of “September” are forgiven for their “misdeeds” as the death of the main heroes purifies their sins. &nbsp

    Get PDF
Silver nanoparticle synthesis from plant extracts has been widely used in medicine. Potential applications of silver nanoparticles include wound dressings, prosthetic and surgical instrument coatings, drug delivery, and an antimicrobial agent. The present study prepared and tested an aqueous extract of Ajuga iva leaves for its phytochemical components. The results of the phytochemical analysis of Ajuga iva leaf extract revealed the presence of alkaloids, carbohydrates, proteins, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, and coumarins. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized using the Ajuga iva leaf extract in a 1 mM solution of silver nitrate. The synthesized silver nanoparticles were characterized with UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and Fourier Transform Infra-Red (FTIR) spectrum. SEM analysis revealed the size of the AgNPs of 36 nm, 55 nm, 70 nm, 100 nm, and 300 nm. The EDX study showed that the optical absorption peak was detected at 3 keV, the characteristic peak for the absorbed metallic silver nanoparticles. FTIR analysis identified the possible functional group involved in the reduction of silver metal ions into silver nanoparticles. In addition, the antibacterial activity of synthesized silver nanoparticles was also examined and the results showed good antibacterial activities against E. coli and Streptococcus bacteria

The aim of the study was to examine the influence of attachment to one's place of residence and the perception of risk controllability on protective behavior among populations living in flood-prone areas of Abidjan. To this end, a questionnaire was administered to 200 heads of households aged between 40 and 75 in the Gonzacqueville district, comprising 147 tenants and 53 homeowners. The results, obtained using SPSS 20.0 software, show that attachment to one's place of residence determines protective behaviour among people living in flood-prone areas of Abidjan. When residents of the Gonzacqueville neighborhood have low attachment to their place of residence and do not control flood risks, they mobilize more problem-centered strategies compared to their peers who have high attachment, control flood risks, and use emotion-centered coping strategies. These results could be exploited by local government officials in their implementation of protective measures for populations at risk of flooding

Does corporate governance affect M&As’ impact on social and environmental performance? Evidence from Milan Stock Exchange’s listed firms

    Get PDF
This study’s aim is twofold: (1) to explore the effect of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) on bidders’ social and environmental performance, and 2) to determine the potential drivers of this process by focusing on corporate governance characteristics. The analysis is based on M&As performed by firms listed on the Milan Italian Stock Exchange during the 5-year period of 2018–2022. The research data were retrieved from the FactSet and Refinitiv Eikon databases and examined using regression analyses. The findings demonstrate that M&As positively affect social and environmental performance, as long as good corporate governance practices are in place. The current research draws on stakeholder-agency theory and identifies the potential drivers of the value creation process in the M&A context enhancing the limited existing literature on this topic. The findings highlight the role of corporate governance in strengthening the impact of M&As on bidders’ non-financial performance, offering valuable practical implications. First, investors and financial analysts should develop a comprehensive perspective to assess the M&A’s impact on non-financial performance. Second, regulators should consider strengthening specific corporate governance requirements. Finally, policymakers should encourage M&As undertaken by firms with sustainability-oriented boards of directors

    Get PDF
Traditional banking operations must be changed because financial industry dynamics and customer demands have started to transform the market. Financial institutions use Agile methods which were created for software development to increase operational efficiency while boosting customer satisfaction levels. Multiple challenges persist for Jordanian banks when they attempt to implement Agile methodologies. The main obstacle stems from employees who resist change. Regulatory demands together with the intricate nature of system integration prove to be big obstacles for organizations. Several banking institutions across the industry encounter difficulties due to limited Agile proficiency among their staff. The implementation process faces various barriers because of workplace hierarchy structures. This research combines interviews with banking experts and surveys to study Agile implementation in Jordanian banks through a mixed-methods approach. The study identifies important barriers that lead to proposed solutions including professional training for selected positions as well as top-level executive backing and stepwise rollouts. The solutions to these problems will enable Jordanian banks to gain agility and competitiveness as well as innovation potential. The study advances knowledge about Agile adoption in literature while presenting usable recommendations for financial institutions. Survey results show resistance to change was the highest barrier at 75% of Jordanian banking employees, then followed by insufficient training as the highest issue at 50%. Moreover, 45% of the participants struggled to implement Agile with existing banking systems. These remarks highlight formal Agile transformation approaches, including specialized training programs and executive-level sponsorship

Résistances sociales autour de la césarienne à Dimbokro (Côte-d’Ivoire) : Le poids des déterminants socioculturels

    Get PDF
While cesarean section rates are high in sub-Saharan Africa, the maternal and perinatal mortality challenge remains. Although C-section is increasingly accepted by pregnant women in some countries, many forms of resistance persist and are not without consequences. In Côte-d'Ivoire, the lack of documentation on social resistance factors around caesarean section limits adapted and saving actions. This study, therefore, aims to understand the social resistance around the caesarean section in Dimbokro, based on the courses of women who have undergone cesarean sections and to grasp the main determinants. Based on in-depth interviews with Cesarean and non-cesarean women, close helpers, care providers of the healing matrons on social refraction at caesarean section, three key factors emerged from our analysis: Attachment to traditional medical practices related to pregnancy and childbirth, the weight of prohibitions, totems and religious dogmas, and gender norms and reproductive gender considerations. A better understanding of this medical act in communities could limit preventable maternal and perinatal deaths
