New Entrants in the Pandemic Era: An Empirical Study on Factors Affecting Start-Up Businesses in The Cities of the Philippines

    No full text
The study’s purpose was to assess the factors influencing the establishment of startup businesses in Philippine Cities during the pandemic. To achieve this, a quantitative method employing a causal explanatory research design was utilized. The study relied on data from the cities and municipalities competitive index (CMCI), which were then analyzed using the Pearson Correlation Coefficient and Multiple linear regression. The findings of the study revealed a positive and significant relationship between newly approved businesses and four variables: the number of banks, the presence of a business-one-stop-shop (boss) operating throughout the year, the availability of broadband services, and the presence of transportation options. These factors were shown to have a significant impact on the establishment of startup businesses in Philippine cities. Regression analysis identified local inflation rate, number of banks, and transportation options as significant predictors of startup businesses in Philippine cities. A 1% increase in the inflation rate resulted in a 69.286 decrease in startups. Based on these factors, the study concluded that launching a business during the pandemic was found to be exceedingly challenging, with existing startups facing greater vulnerability to COVID-19 shocks compared to established businesses. This study highlighted the challenges faced by startups during the pandemic and emphasized the importance of factors like financial access, streamlined registration processes, reliable internet, transportation infrastructure, and inflation rates. Understanding these factors is vital for policymakers and entrepreneurs striving to foster startup establishment and growth in Philippine cities during challenging times

Evaluating the efficacy of social capital in facilitating sustainable municipal waste management: Reflections from Harare, Zimbabwe

    No full text
The volumes of waste in urban areas around the globe continue to increase due to the upsurge in disposals from exponentially growing urban populations. Ideally, the waste must be regularly collected by responsible councils, but in some countries, the collection has been erratic due to operational challenges. Unfortunately, this is the current and perpetually unresolved problem in Zimbabwe. A lack of garbage collection vehicles, as well as a lack of fuel for the available refuse collection trucks, has resulted in sporadic refuse collection in urban areas. The accumulation of uncollected waste in Zimbabwe's urban areas pollutes the environment and exposes the inhabitants to health risks, leaving waste management responsibilities to the community. This research, adopts the mixed-methods approach to evaluate the efficacy of using community social capital in waste management in urban Zimbabwe. Data was collected through a survey, observations and key informant interviews. The study revealed that due to poor refuse collection by the Harare City Council, residents have taken the initiative to use their social capital to manage waste in their communities through mechanisms like clean-up exercises, environmental cleanliness training workshops as well as forming collaborations with community-based organisations. However, these social capital initiatives are backtracked by some errant residents who continue to dump waste in undesignated areas. Measures such as the introduction of waste recycling income generation projects, giving incentives to community clean-up participants and enforcement of penalties for dumping waste in illegal places are recommended to support social capital initiatives in municipal waste management in Harare.&nbsp

Juxtaposing the synopsis of Nigerian education system reforms with the principle of sustainable system-wide change: Implications for the Nigerian basic education system

    No full text
Reform in education is an inevitable, continuous phenomenon that usually takes place as a result of problems with the previous curriculum, changes in societal needs, responses to disasters or crises, staying up to date with new national challenges, the need to raise educational standards, expectations for the future, staff innovation, and leadership changes. A change in education that affects every level, classrooms, structures, teaching environment, schools at the district/local, province/state/regional, and federal/national governments, as well as the administrative and governmental procedures that steer the entire educational process, is referred to as system-wide change. This kind of change offers a framework for a comprehensive change model that depends on systemic change that is rooted in stakeholders’ continuous engagement and shared ownership of the change effort and is driven locally. Nigeria has seen a number of changes in its educational system prior to, during, and following colonial rule. This paper juxtaposed the educational reforms that have been carried out in Nigeria before, during, and after her independence with the principle of system-wide change. It was found that Nigerian educational reform has not adhered to the tenets of the system-wide change process. Therefore, the paper suggests that in order for Nigeria's educational system to successfully undergo change, it must do so in accordance with the principle of system-wide reform procedure, which includes developing systems design, extended stakeholders’ ownership, a systems perspective on education, learning organisations, and changing stakeholder mindsets about education

    No full text
Cellulose-starch blend was the remedy to the stark environmental issues of petrochemical-based plant bag (Technavio, 2019; Blick et al., 2014). Using the Randomized Complete Block Design, this study prompted to design a composite plant bag made of mung bean starch and water hyacinth cellulose with plasticizer glycerol. The study involves the investigation of the best ratio of cellulose-starch in producing plant bag, evaluation of the intrinsic attributes of the different ratio in terms of their tensile strength, elongation, swelling behavior, and biodegradability, and lastly, its significant difference to the pure starch-based plant bag on the said properties. The researchers prepared five treatments: four experimental (cellulose-starch mixture) and one control (pure starched mixture); each has four replicates. Researchers used two sample unpaired t-test and Likert scale to assess the intrinsic attributes of each treatment. The results unveiled that the ratio 8:2 of mung bean starch and water hyacinth cellulose respectively yields the best mixture among the treatments. It has a tensile strength, elongation, and swelling percentage of 40 MPa, 40% and 160% respectively and was degraded under laboratory condition (thoroughly assessed through their thickness, decolorization and tearing apart after the introduction of microbial solution on it). It was also significantly better than the pure starched-mixture having a t-computed value of t (2) = 3.52, 4.51, 2.90 and 0, p<.05 respectively. The researchers concluded that the higher the concentration amount of water hyacinth cellulose on the system, the higher the tensile strength, elongation, swelling percentage, and the longer its shelf life

The Genesis of Education System in Bangladesh: Review of Policies and Practices from Value-Driven Perspectives

    No full text
The education system in Bangladesh is primarily derived from the British colonial legacy, imposing a secular philosophy despite a majority Muslim population. This article critically examines the roots and historical development of the education system in Bangladesh, discussing its basic structure and framework while presenting chronological narratives. The study seeks to comprehend prevailing trends by employing content analysis involving historical records, government documents, study reports, and expert opinions. The findings reveal a consistent neglect of religious education at all levels, lacking a foundation in Islamic philosophy. The study traces the curriculum’s evolution from the early Muslim era to current times. Despite efforts to incorporate Islamic education during the Pakistan period and the post-independence era, these initiatives largely faltered. Post-independence, the recommendations of various education commissions primarily reflect the intentions of ruling powers, lacking consistency and failing to incorporate universal values into education policy. The study advocates for a comprehensive review of education policies, curriculum frameworks, and textbooks, emphasizing the identification of gaps and the incorporation of moral and ethical values to foster the balanced growth of individuals

    No full text
This case presentation investigates the prevalence of urinary tract infections (UTIs) among pregnant women in the Municipality of Baao, Camarines Sur, Philippines, from February 2022 to November 2023. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are a common concern among pregnant women globally, with up to 15\% affected during pregnancy. UTIs, even without symptoms, are linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes like preterm birth, low birth weight, and neonatal death. With that, this research was conducted to understand the incidence of UTIs, develop effective strategies for prevention and treatment, and improve maternal and neonatal health outcomes. In this paper, 497 women were tested for urine analysis, of which 242 were pregnant. The data collection process involved reviewing Individual Treatment Records, Laboratory Records, and Logbooks from the Rural Health Unit of Baao. The incidence of UTIs among pregnant women was found to be 45\%. The most common risk factors for UTIs were a history of UTIs, diabetes mellitus, and multiple sexual partners. The clinical presentation of UTIs included symptoms such as dysuria, frequency, urgency, and hematuria. Based on the study's findings, raising awareness among pregnant women about the importance of regular prenatal care is recommended to reduce the incidence of UTIs. There should be an emphasis on implementing tailored educational programs that provide comprehensive information about hygiene practices, including proper sanitation and personal hygiene, to pregnant women with lower educational attainment. Healthcare providers should also integrate routine UTI screenings into prenatal care packages, emphasizing the second trimester, as this is the most susceptible period to UTIs due to hormonal changes and anatomical adaptations in the urinary system. Furthermore, healthcare providers should tailor their approaches for older pregnant women (age 20 and above) by educating them about the increased risk of UTIs and the importance of proactive preventive measures. Lastly, interventions should be designed to specifically target women with multiple pregnancies by providing them with the necessary support and resources, such as organizing support groups or educational sessions, to address the unique challenges they face, including the increased risk of UTIs. Conclusively, this study contributes to understanding UTIs among pregnant women and provides implications and recommendations for better maternal and neonatal health in the Municipality of Baao and beyond

    No full text
Ensuring quality in higher education hinges on robust teacher professional development. A crucial aspect of this development is the cultivation of teachers’ disposition towards lifelong learning. Given the growing importance of lifelong learning on continuing professional development (CPD) of teachers, this SDG-driven research was conducted to determine whether lifelong learning tendencies (LLTs) are significant predictors of teachers’ engagement in CPD. Using the revised LLTs Scale of Diker-Coskun, the lifelong learning tendencies of 244 full-time faculty members from public and private higher education institutions (HEIs) in the Province of Camarines Sur were calculated. The computed LLTs were analyzed using logistic ordinal regression to see if they influence teacher engagement in various aspects of CPD. Subsequent data analysis revealed that faculty members exhibit remarkably strong lifelong learning tendencies along with motivation, persistence, self-learning regulation, and curiosity. In terms of CPD engagement, while a significant majority participate actively in continuing education and career-related training, their engagement with professional organizations appears lower. Further, the predictive influence of LLTs on CPD was found to be contingent upon specific aspects of professional development. Drawing on the insights gained from these findings, a lifelong learning framework specifically tailored to the needs and contexts of HEIs in the Province of Camarines Sur was made

Growth After Adversity: The Lived Experiences of Posttraumatic Growth Among Selected Covid-19 Survivors in Bataan, Philippines

    No full text
Dealing with a traumatic event, such as severe COVID-19 symptoms, may deplete one's strength and fill them with fear and hopelessness. Despite such events that may demoralize an individual, the Posttraumatic Growth (PTG) phenomenon allows for the possibility of growth in the face of adversity. The purpose of this study is to explore the lived experiences of Posttraumatic Growth of the COVID-19 survivors and to ascertain what aspects of positive growth they have experienced. The researchers used purposive sampling to obtain the required number of respondents and used the interview protocol to conduct a semi-structured interview to gather the necessary information. Five themes have been identified using Colaizzi's seven steps for descriptive phenomenological data analysis. Specifically; (1) savor, (2) invigorating, (3) benevolent, (4) optimistic, and (5) light, which then abbreviated as SIBOL, a Tagalog word which means sprout; growth; spring that symbolizes the beginning of the growth of COVID-19 survivors. They perceived the Posttraumatic Growth as an opportunity to live their lives differently, this time embracing the new positive changes in their lives. Though there have only been a few studies on Posttraumatic Growth in the Philippines, it has the potential to raise a lot of awareness about the possible benefits of attaining Posttraumatic Growth. This assists in identifying a way to view adversity as a challenge that will aid in the growth process, where our emphasis shifts from learning about negative experiences to facilitating Posttraumatic Growth itself.
