Evaluation of Assessment Method to Incorporate Graduate Attributes in Building Surveying Module
This study aims at finding out whether an alternate assessment strategy in Sustainable Developments module to improve the student’s employability skills and qualities. The exploratory studies, quantitative and qualitative questions acted as a data gathering instruments. The findings showed a need to change the current assessment strategy for Sustainable Developments module, proposed a new assessment approach and evaluated it. The research infers the studied institution should encourage academic staff to get familiar with the effective learning strategies, students learning styles and how to assess an assessment plan with graduate attributes model. A suggested direction for further research is to create an assessment model based on the students learning styles, assessment strategies and the workload information
A Study on the Effectiveness of Bracing Systems in Soft Storey Steel Buildings
A soft storey or a weak storey is one in which the lateral stiffness is less than 70 percent of that in the storey above or it can be less than 80 percent of the average lateral stiffness of the three stories above. For the reduction of lateral deflection of a structure, a bracing system is provided. In seismic design of structure and in high rise structure, the provision of bracing system has become more effective. So this paper aims to find out the effect of bracing on soft storey of steel building. In this paper, G+9 steel frames are modeled with different type of bracing pattern and different combination of soft story using software STAAD Pro. Effect of these different bracings on soft storey is studied for different parameter like column displacement, maximum deflection, storey drift, maximum bending moment, maximum axial force and maximum shear force. From the observed result best type of bracing will be selected
Improving the e-activity Design in Problem-based Learning Module in Mechanical Engineering
The transition from the teacher-centric learning environment to the problem-based learning (PBL) environment may not be smooth due to students’ expectations of getting direct support from the teacher. However, a teacher also tries to teach students the skills to be an independent learner. The aim of this study is to improve the students learning experience in the PBL environment by improving the e-tivity (online activity) design in a blended online teaching module in Mechanical Engineering (ME). A mixed research method approach helped to analyse the students’ learning experience in the module. The result shows that the present design of the e-tivities does not provide students with opportunities to study effectively in the PBL environment online, and proposed an improved design of the e-tivities. It implies the need to create e-tivities by taking into consideration the students’ learning styles to encourage active participation, to provide rich student-tutor interactions for prompt feedback on the students’ performance and hold workshops to improve the facilitation skills of the academic staff in the PBL environment. Further study suggests evaluating the effectiveness of the designed e-tivities on the students’ academic performance, and the development of the skills needed to study effectively in a PBL environment
Application of Artificial Neural Network to Analyze Hexagonal Plate with Hole Considering Different Geometrical and Loading Parameters
In the competitive nature of structural engineering, industry and its heuristic problem-solving needs, among other reasons, have contributed to the development of some advanced decision making tools. A step ahead from soft computing techniques, now artificial intelligence has proved itself as an efficient tool for solving the problem in construction industry over old tedious analytical methods. In this study, Artificial Neural Network is compared with finite element techniques in order to find the stress, strain and deflection in plates with holes. For approaching the complexity of the problem, hexagonal plates with holes and different geometrical and loading parameters have been taken as specimens. Finite element analysis for 81 cases are carried out using the software based on finite element method (FEM), ANSYS Workbench 15.0 software. Using these data of FEM analysis an Artificial Neural Network has been trained. The successfully trained network is further used for analysis of four new cases which are also validated by using FEM based software. It was found that most of the results were quite close to the FEM results. Such a technique can be used to reduce the computation time and labour
Performance Enhancement of DS-CDMA System using Extended BPSK Modulation Scheme
In a last few decades there has been tremendous growth and a drastic rise in wireless communication technologies. The major issue that the world is facing today with the advent of so many sophisticated wireless communication devices is efficient utilization of the spectrum. Spectrum efficiency comes together with a tradeoff factor of energy consumption. Thus, the need of the hour is an energy and bandwidth efficient technique. DS-CDMA is one of the competitive and most investigated technique in wireless communication which caters the large demand at the same time with limited bandwidth. Existing modulation techniques does not promise to provide better performance in case of higher noise. Therefore, one looks for a better BER stipulated modulation format to improve and enhance the performance of the system. This article revisits conventional Binary phase shift keying method and compares its performance in terms of BER with a special Extended Binary Phase Shift Keying (EBPSK) modulation format for a DS- CDMA system. EBPSK scheme is flexible and simple which is easily integrated in a network and assures improved and enhanced performance
Student's perception of effectiveness of a technology enhanced problem based learning environment in a Mechanical Engineering module
The main aim of this research is to improve the use of education technology inproblem based learning (PBL) environment in a Mechanical Engineering (ME) module. The research study adoptedthe quantitative and qualitative methods. The study sample comprised of 79 students from Edinburgh Napier University (ENU), Scotland. Thedata gathering instrument comprised of two quantitative and one qualitative student’s feedback questionnaires. The results shows that education technology integration into the PBL environment according to the students learning needs,toprovide students with an opportunities to collaborate and build new knowledge in a PBL environment. Finally, the study proposed an improved design of the learning task. It implies the need for the teaching institution to provide academic staff development to support tutors in carrying out PBL and to encourage the use of tools like 3E-Framework that help academic staff to meaningfully incorporate technology into learning and teaching
Comparative Analysis of Cloud Simulators and Authentication Techniques in Cloud Computing
Cloud computing is the concern of computer hardware and software resources above the internet so that anyone who is connected to the internet can access it as a service or provision in a seamless way. As we are moving more and more towards the application of this newly emerging technology, it is essential to study, evaluate and analyze the performance, security and other related problems that might be encountered in cloud computing. Since, it is not a practicable way to directly examine the behavior of cloud on such problems using the real hardware and software resources due to its high costs, modeling and simulation has become an essential tool to withstand with these issues. Analysis of Student’s Data Using Rapid Miner
Data mining offers a new advance to data analysis using techniques based on machine learning, together with the conventional methods collectively known as educational data mining (EDM). Educational Data Mining has turned up as an interesting and useful research area for finding methods to improve quality of education and to identify various patterns in educational settings. It is useful in extracting information of students, teachers, courses, administrators from educational institutes such as schools/colleges/universities and helps to suggest interesting learning experiences to various stakeholders. This paper focuses on the applications of data mining in the field of education and implementation of three widely used data mining techniques using Rapid Miner on the data collected through a survey.
Investigating the Effect of Theoretical and Laboratory Teaching on the Students’ Academic Performance in Mechanical Engineering
In order to improve the students’ learning experience in the Mechanical Engineering (ME) modules, a problem based learning (PBL) approach is used and the learning activities are designed to provide students with an opportunity to learn theory and perform the experiments to develop a better understanding of the subject. The aim of this action research is to investigate the effect of the theoretical and laboratory based instructions in the Engineering Applications module on the students’ academic performance. The sample is composed of 106 students from Edinburgh Napier University (ENU) in Scotland. The data is comprised of the marks obtained by the students in the summative design assessment, based on the theoretical studies and the two online quizzes based on the laboratory experiments. The results show that the module’s instructions are mostly focused on the experimental studies which indicates that the experimental studies are not supporting the theoretical studies. It illustrates that the theoretical studies and the experimental studies indirectly support each other. It also shows that the students are not provided with an adequate opportunities to develop the engineering application skills. This implies a need to constructively align such modules, in order to improve the student’s learning experience. The concept mapping tools can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of the teaching practices on the students learning experience. The learning activities design should take into consideration the learning styles of the students to encourage them to actively participate in the PBL environment. In addition, the educational institutions should provide support to the academics to improve their facilitation skills in the PBL environment. A suggestion for further research is made to evaluate the effectiveness of the theoretical and experimental teaching instructions based on the Bloom’s Taxonomy on the students learning experience
