Primeiros Voos
Estimados autores e leitores,

Malnutrition in cancer patients (CPs) is frequent, particularly in cases of head and neck cancer, and cancer of the digestive tract, due the location of the tumors, which may prevent nutrient intake and absorption. Given the severity of cancer-related malnutrition, adequate food intake measures are required, especially in relation to the energy consumed by these patients. Nutritional interventions (NIs) should be initiated whenever current or expected nutritional risk is diagnosed, when patients should be referred to specialized CP nutritionists. The main approaches of the NIs are nutritional counseling, prescription of oral nutritional supplements, and enteral nutrition, to be determined and selected through nutritional screening and assessment. Different nutritional guidelines help professionals in the provision of nutritional support. The aim of the present study was to conduct a narrative literature review regarding the role of nutrition and the main means of nutritional intervention, which contribute to the prevention and treatment of cancer outpatients through a literary research in Portuguese and English using electronic resources. We concluded that nutritional interventions are imperative in cases of cancer-associated malnutrition, but further research is needed to determine the true role of food in the prevention of cancer
Post-COVID-19 multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children: a case report
Objective: Report of a case of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) post-COVID 19 and review of articles on the topic. Results: Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is a disease whose symptoms are similar between the adult and pediatric population, ranging from asymptomatic cases to more serious conditions that have spread global terror due to the high number of infections worldwide deaths. However, children have presented a milder clinic. It is worth mentioning, however, that this population is not completely risk-free, with reports of the association of the Coronavirus triggering inflammatory diseases, such as the so-called MIS-C whose complications can be as serious as the forms of symptoms experienced by adults. Conclusion: The temporal and serological relationship of a link with SARS-CoV-2 infection is supported by consistent data, however further studies are needed to establish SARS-CoV-2 as an inciting agent. Due to the severity of MIS-C, knowledge about this disease is necessary for a quick diagnosis and early treatment, aiming to reduce systemic lesions. Due to the increase in the number of cases of children affected by MIS-C, the use of immunomodulatory drugs, such as intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), aspirin, and systemic glucocorticoids, has been instituted as first-line therapy, to reduce inflammation and late complications
Eating habits and practice of physical activity among eutrophic and overweight adolescents
OBJECTIVES: To assess the eating habits and physical activity of adolescents enrolled in two public schools in the city of Ribeirão Preto (SP). METHODS: A case-control study was conducted to analyze the eating habits and practice of physical activity of a group of overweight adolescents and of a eutrophic control group matched for sex and age. The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ short version) and a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire were applied and a 3-day food record was obtained. The nutritive value of the foods consumed was calculated with the Virtual Nutri® software. Body fat was estimated using the equations of Slaughter et al. Data were analyzed statistically by ANOVA and by the Fisher exact test. RESULTS: Fifty-one (44.7%) overweight and 63 (55.2%) eutrophic adolescents were studied. Mean BMI was 29.5 for the overweight group and 21.0 for the eutrophic group, and percent body fat was 49.4 and 29.1, respectively (p<0.01-ANOVA). The daily calorie intake of the eutrophic adolescents consisted of 56.7% carbohydrates, 15.4% proteins and 27.9% lipids and the intake of the overweight group was 52.7%, 17.1% and 30.2%, respectively. In the eutrophic group, 28.6% were considered to be very active and 60.3% active and in the overweight group these values were 23.5% and 70.6%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Information about the eating and physical activity habits of adolescents is of fundamental importance for subsidizing individual and community actions. Although adolescents report apparently adequate physical activity and calorie consumption, health professional should be aware of the high rates of overweight and obesity detected in this age range
Review of literature: carotenoids, chemical composition and dietary reference intake of buriti fruits
Although fruits and vegetables, sources of carotenoids, are widely available in Brazil, hypovitaminosis A constitutes a serious public health problem. There is lack of information available to the population about the dietary sources of carotenoids and factors affecting their bioavailability. The carotenoids also known as bioactive compounds have been associated with the reduction of the risk for degenerative diseases, such as cancer (modulators of immunological responses), cardiovascular diseases, macular degeneration and cataract. In Brazil the utilization of buriti fruit is not widespread; it is consumed only by the local population of some parts of the North and Central regions. Among those foods, out the foods of buritizeiro, the buriti has the highest content of β-carotene among the numerous foods already analyzed, as well as a source of oleic fatty acid, similar to olive oil. The buriti fruit provides the needs of DRI.s (Dietary Reference Intake) of vitamin A for adult, being a good source of nutrition, knowing the variety of foods that composes a balanced diet. Also, the buriti fruit is a natural source of β-carotene (provitamin A). Also, it has antioxidant power by having carotenoids, polyphenols, vitamin C compared to other vegetables, can be considered a functional food
Azeite de Oliva e suas propriedades em preparações quentes: revisão da literatura
Introduction: Olive oil is recognized due to its anti-oxidant properties in order to be incorporated in cooking, but the most used form of oil is in the cold presentation. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes in the olive oil properties after cooking and frying. Methods: Active Research articles in national and international scientific basis, covering the years 1990-2015. Results: Olive oil shows discrete loss of antioxidants and lipid changes in properties after heating at high temperatures, but had greater stability compared to other types of oils, hardly leading to the formation of toxic compounds. Conclusion: We could use olive oil in heated preparation because it preserves much of its beneficial characteristics and, after heating, its beneficial properties remains superior to other oils
Manejo nutrológico no pós-operatório de cirurgia bariátrica
Obesity is one of the largest epidemics of this century and is associated with several comorbidities, leading to poor quality of life and longevity. Obesity is related to genetic and environmental factors and is characterized by change in body composition, where there is more supply than energy expenditure, allowing the accumulation of body fat. The Bariatric Surgery (BC) is an effective method for sustained weight loss in obese patients, where the gastric bypass surgery Roux-Y (RYGB) is the most common technique in Brazil. BC is set by a procedure, which changes the gastrointestinal tract leading to reduced food intake and reduced absorption. Patients who undergo BC at risk for nutritional deficiencies in the postoperative period and obesity by itself is related to some deficiencies. Nutritional deficiencies in the postoperative period can be attributed to several factors such as the preoperative deficiency, reduced food intake, inadequate supplementation, malabsorption of nutrients and inadequate nutrological support, such as lack of monitoring or absence of postoperative follow-up. The most common deficiencies are iron, protein, calcium, folate, thiamine, zinc, copper and vitamins D, B12, A, C and K. The proper guidance, monitoring and follow-up postoperatively are the essential actions in identifying and/or prevention of these deficiencies
Nutrologia e nutrição em unidade de terapia intensiva: sinergia em busca de excelência
Objective: Nutritional therapy, in spite of current guidelines, does not seem to be perceived yet as an important therapeutic strategy in critical patients. The objective of this study was to assess the joint action of a team composed of a nutrology specialist and a nutritionist in ICU by measuring quality indicators such as fasting time and adequacy of caloric intake. Methods: This is a prospective descriptive study realized in a mixed adult intensive care unit, with patients that remained stayed for longer than 24h. Patients received nutritional therapy according to a protocol based on guidelines and adapted to the unit. Demographic and clinical data were gathered; nutritional route, time of start of therapy, prescribed volume, and received volume of enteral feeding. Results: Out of 89 patients assessed, 48 (53.9%) started with oral feeding, 2 (2.2%) received parenteral feeding, and 39 (43.8%), enteral feeding. The time for enteral therapy to start was 24h and 25 minutes (QI: 7-44h), and 87.2% of patients received enteral feeding in the first 48h of stay. For surgical patients (n=42), the time to start feeding via any route was 20h and 59 minutes (QI: 14h 45 min - 41h 15 min). 87% of the calories prescribed were instilled via enteral feeding throughout the 284 days of assessment. Conclusion: The presence of a team composed of a nutrology specialist and a nutritionist may be capable of meeting the attention and specific knowledge in nutritional therapy needs, bringing high quality and proven excellence through the indicators measured
Micronutrientes e Diminuição do Estresse Oxidativo nos Espermatozoides
The integrity of spermatozoa in the seminal fluid given its parameters (motility, concentration, morphology and vitality) is important for the reproductive function. The oxidative stress can adversely affect the quality of the semen, which causes the damage and dysfunction of the sperm. Thus, a literature review based on Pubmed was held seeking studies that aimed to improve the quality of sperm with the use of antioxidants. The use of certain vitamins and minerals seem to affect the sperm quality. Literature data on single or combined oral use of these micronutrients in improving semen parameters and fertility potential are limited and scarce. Thus, it is essential to develop new studies that enable micronutrient dosages settings, as well as their combinations in improving sperm quality. The use of oral antioxidants has proved to be a promising strategy for a non-invasive treatment that reduces the need to use assisted reproductive technologies; providing lower costs in the management of male infertility
