Objective: to know the intake of macro and micronutrients among a group of adolescents in the city of Ribeirão Preto (SP). Methods: observational study in which it is observed the intake and eating habits of adolescents, through the food frequency questionnaire validated for adolescents and the food record of 3 days. Results: the participants were 130 adolescents, of whom 81 (62.3%) were female and 49 (37.6%) male, with a mean age 196.8 ± 11 months. Food items with the highest intake were rice, beans, candies, bread, sugar and milk. The percentage of energy from macronutrients were 56.4% for the group of carbohydrate, 15.3% protein and 28.3% lipid. Regarding minerals, it was observed a low intake than the recommended for calcium, adequate intake of iron and zinc and, notably, excessive sodium intake. Conclusions: The results showed that adolescents consume a large amount of simple sugars, saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol and sodium, which, in excess, can cause harm to the health of individuals in full stage of development. Therefore, the evident need to implement food education programs targeted to adolescents and their families, in order to change consumer’s habits, specially the reduction of sodium present in processed foods as well as those prepared in restaurants, decrease of sugar consumption and increase of eating vegetables and foods with calcium

Eating disorders are psychological disorders that directly affect the physical health of those who suffer from them, with a high mortality rate. Women are more prone to eating disorders than men, which is why most research focuses on women. Thus, 10% of patients with eating disorders are men. The results of bibliographical research are presented through in-depth interviews about the perception of the body that Social Work and Psychology professionals, who worked in both the public and private sectors, as an element that can influence eating disorders. This perception has been analyzed as an element that influences eating disorders. This research reaches three main conclusions: First, the body is considered by professionals as an instrument to stop time when personal identity problems arise, especially when the patient is a woman. Second, professionals perceive their patients' bodies as a responsibility in open conflict with social perceptions seen as something unattainable, ideal, and subject to unattainable parameters. Finally, the perception of the body is guided by social imaginaries in which morality (taboo and sin) and the biological are predominant

The aim of the present study was to perform a systematic review of the available scientific literature regarding the use of whey protein (WP) in the management of HIV wasting syndrome. The following scientific repositories were searched: PubMed/Medline, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), Scielo, ScienceDirect, Europe PubMed Central (Europe PMC), LILACS (BIREME) and BVSalud. Search parameters consisted of combinations of the terms HIV, wasting syndrome, muscle mass, and whey protein, in English, Portuguese and Spanish. From these filters, three articles were identified for analysis; one article was published in AIDS, one in BMJ, and the third was published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. All three studies were quantitative in nature (100%), with a combined total of 407 participants (mean = 135.7). Study volunteers were mainly female (60.7%), and volunteers had no other pathologies that could lead to muscle wasting and were not receiving anabolic treatments. The studies were performed in the United States (n = 2) and Ethiopia (n = 1). One study analyzed the effects of WP alone, one compared WP to exercise and to an association between these two, and the third study compared WP to soy protein. The main research variables were weight (n = 3), body cell mass (n = 2), fat-free mass or lean mass (n = 3), fat mass (n = 2), and muscle strength (n = 2). The results of the three studies show that WP may lead to weight gain but has no significant effect on muscle mass in HIV/AIDS wasting syndrome

Liver cirrhosis is associated with high morbidity and mortality, impairment of quality of life (QOF) and malnutrition. This study assessed the impact of malnutrition on QOF of hospitalized cirrhotic patients. The instruments used were Nutritional Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) and Quality of Life Short Form (SF-36). Ninety two patients were included. Malnutrition was quite prevalent and QOF in all its domains was impaired, specially the role-physical domain. Malnutrition was associated with lower QOF in physical and emotional aspects domains. Early diagnostic approach can provide valuable information for the better nutritional and psychological management of patients, given the need for greater humanization in the treatment of the physical and emotional suffering of these patients

Major clinical findings of β-alanine in sports performance: a systematic review

Introduction: Dietary supplements offer ergogenic aid in an attempt to increase energy, improve recovery and modulate body composition, enabling improved performance. Thus, β-alanine is a substrate of carnosine and is becoming an ergogenic aid for sports performance. Objective: To carry out a systematic review to highlight the main scientific evidence on the improvement of sports performance with the use of β-alanine. Methods: The PRISMA Platform rules were used. The research was developed using the SCOPUS, PUBMED, and SCIENCE DIRECT databases. The quality of the studies was based on the GRADE instrument and the risk of bias was analyzed according to the Cochrane instrument. Results and Conclusion: Studies have shown that β-alanine has an important ergogenic role in sports performance. Weeks of beta-alanine supplementation (4-6g per day) significantly increases muscle carnosine concentrations. The only side effect reported is paresthesia. Beta-alanine attenuates neuromuscular fatigue, particularly in older individuals. Also, combining beta-alanine with other supplements can be advantageous when beta-alanine supplementation is high enough (4-6 g per day) and long enough (minimum 4 weeks)

False hyperparathyroids secondary to biotin prolonged use: a case report

A 55-year-old overweight female patient with elevated parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels, without any other major plasma biochemical abnormalities, and with normal vitamin D and calcium levels. The condition was suggestive of normocalcemic primary hyperparathyroidism. Bone densitometry and 24-hour calciuria were normal. After extensive investigation and possible referral for exploratory surgery, the patient reported continued and chronic use of biotin supplementation (2.5 mg per day). Repeated tests after discontinuing the use of vitamin B7 showed normal PTH levels without surgical or pharmacological interventions. Biotin supplementation associated with the use of this vitamin as a component of biological assays for hormone dosage can generate incorrect laboratory results, which puts medical conduct at risk with inaccurate diagnoses and unnecessary procedures. Although, different substances or emotional conditions can interfere with hormone dosages, one must consider the use of food supplements such as biotin since it can also generate unreliable results. Discontinuation of the use of biotin, in addition to the assessment of serum biotin levels prior to hormone dosing is necessary for a correct evaluation of serum PTH levels. This study was analyzed and approved by the Research Ethics Committee, and obtaining the Informed Consent Form according to CNS/CONEP Resolution 466/12

This study aimed to review the national and international literature on the benefits of sprouted wheat as an alternative source of vitamin B12. Since it is an inexpensive food and easily accessible worldwide, this could be better used in nutritional therapies in conjunction with conventional treatment to optimize its effects and shorten the rehabilitation of the patient’s immune system during chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Given the general deficiency of food in the world, especially those with good quality protein, it is interesting to research procedures that could improve the nutritional value of2 foods available. The sprouted wheat is a food that could be better used in therapeutic diets, because besides being an affordable and low cost food, is great source of B vitamins, especially vitamin B12, containing 4.8 micrograms of B12 per gram of germinated wheat (19). (The sprouted wheat still have significant concentrations apigenin and flavonoids, substances also found in fruits and vegetables, and which have an important role in inhibiting cancer cells). We will also present a program of nutrition and physical activity to support the reversal and remission of cancer

Gestante e necessidade da vitamina D

Vitamin D, when remembered by its action on calcium and phosphorus metabolism, has also been involved in control and regulation of cell growth and differentiation in many tissues, and the immune system and tumor genesis (cancer of the colon, breast, and prostate). Moreover, receptors for this hormone can be found in almost all body tissues and other actions not related to mineral metabolism have been attributed to him. Nowadays there are many studies linking the lack of Vitamin D in the body to some disease (multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, obesity, metabolic syndrome, type 1 diabetes mellitus, systemic lupus erythematosus, osteoarthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis). The problems go beyond impaired bone health - already established relationship, because the nutrient helps retain calcium in the bones, and deficiency (< 20 ng / ml) or insufficiency (20-30 ng / ml) associated with osteomalacia, oesteopenia, osteoporosis and increased risk of bone fractures). A vitamin D deficiency may be a risk factor for adverse pregnancy outcomes such as preterm birth, low birth weight, restriction of intrauterine growth and gestational diabetes. Therefore, prevention of vitamin D deficiency in pregnant women is essential
