We have assembled in this book a set of articles on the history of pandemics, which treat the subject in the world context and very particularly in the Portuguese context. The topics chosen correspond to the interests of the researchers who kindly agreed to collaborate. The first two articles deal with the plague, the great medieval pandemic that still raged in Porto in 1899. The third presents a brief history of tuberculosis in Portugal, with emphasis on the reception of innovations made abroad. The fourth discusses the fertile relationship between chemistry and public health, whose relevance has been growing since the 19th century. The fifth is a study of the French physician Jules Héricourt, who lived between the 19th and 20th centuries. The sixth deals with the Spanish flu and the lessons it taught. The seventh deals with viruses, particles that were very poorly known at the time of the Spanish flu. Finally, the eighth and ninth treat the current issue of COVID-19, one its evolution in Portugal and the other how the History of Science was able to use the subject in its research and pedagogical aspects.

The Spanish Flu, also called Pneumonic, was a pandemic event caused by the H1N1 influenza subtype that emerged in 1918, in the last year of I World War. The virus affected the lungs and airways, causing haemorrhagic pneumonia with secondary bacterial infection. The origin is unknown, but Spanish newspapers widely reported the effects of the virus in the country. As Spain assumed a neutral position in the war, press censorship was not practised. The pandemic spread to various parts of the world in three waves, the second of which, in the fall of 1918, was responsible for the highest rates of morbidity and mortality. Overall, it resulted in about 500 million infected worldwide and more than 50 million deaths. It was distinguished by high mortality in young adults. Portugal was a very affected country. The Spanish Flu entered the country through the Alentejo region, during the months of June and July 1918.We intend, with this article, to reflect on how from the 1918-1919 pandemic developed knowledge in the field of public health emerged, and subsequent scientific advances facilitated the development of preventive measures, including vaccines and antivirals. Many lessons from the Spanish Flu pandemic have been learned and have contributed to the history of science in preventing other potential pandemics and epidemics that occurred or were prevented in the 20th and early 21st century, including the Covid-19 pandemic.

The current pandemic that we all face, caused by the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, has an unquestionable impact on our routines and way of thinking, also affecting the course of school activities. Science becomes even more noticeable in our society, as it became crucial to understand the virus, the disease, and its implications in our daily life. When it comes to science teaching, the pandemic highlighted for the need of our students to understand how science develops (nature of science) and to develop competences that allow them to overcome a diversity of challenges and to take informed and conscious decisions. In this way, resorting to the current pandemic context, as well as to the historical pandemic contexts may enhance students’ learning of all educational levels. Therefore, it was constructed and validated a questionnaire to understand how history of science, namely the history of pandemics, as well as the current pandemic context were focused on classes in Portugal. Questionnaires were sent by email, asking teachers from basic to secondary school to anonymously complete them online. This study involved 58 teachers of different subjects from the North of Portugal. We verified that a substantial number of teachers referred to have resorted more to the history of pandemics, taking into account the current context, indicating that students revealed motivated. Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, we consider that Science Education came out of this pandemic with a revamped relevance, being teachers training and the development of materials/didactical resources fundamental for a different approach on pandemic history and the current pandemic situation, in order to better be aligned with Science Education research.

Tuberculosis was a very serious disease in Portugal, particularly in the 19th and 20th centuries, having victimized writers such as Júlio Dinis, António Nobre, Cesário Verde and António Aleixo. A pioneering initiative was the creation, in Funchal, of the Hospício Princesa D. Maria Amélia, in 1853. After German bacteriologist Robert Koch identified the causative bacteria, decisive steps were taken to improve public hygiene and eradicate the disease in Portugal with the creation, in 1899, of the National Assistance for Tuberculosis (since 1945, nationalized and renamed the Institute for National Assistance to Tuberculosis) by Queen D. Amélia, and the National League against Tuberculosis by Miguel Bombarda. Simultaneously, several sanatoriums were established: the Sousa Martins in Guarda, founded by Lopo de Carvalho, in 1907, and the Caramulo Sanatorium, founded by Jerónimo de Lacerda, in 1920. Finally, the application of the BCG vaccine, invented in 1921, and widespread among us, belonging to the national vaccination plan as of the 1950s, and the application of an antibiotic (streptomycin), identified in 1946 and soon used here, proved to be effective tools against tuberculosis. In this article we intend to present, in general lines, the development of the disease among us, highlighting the reception of medical novelties, and its progressive evanescence, which is not yet total.

The epidemic diseases that devastated the European populations added to the miseries that existed until the mid-nineteenth century, causing considerable loss of human life. The European continent has a long history of plague, a disease caused by the Y. pestis bacteria. Contrary to popular belief, bubonic plague is not a disease of the past. It is still present in more than a dozen countries around the world. This paper analyzes Jules Héricourt's ideas regarding the international transmissibility of epidemic diseases and how to mitigate their chains. It is essentially based on his work Les Frontières de la Maladie, namely on Défense internationale contre les maladies épidémiques, et systémes quarantenaires. In 1901, an outbreak of plague ravaged the passengers and crew of the ship Senegal on a Mediterranean cruise. A quarantine was imposed on the entire crew and 174 passengers in the lazaretto in the French archipelago of Frioul. There was one death. The lack of minimum services and immediate disinfection measures for passengers and their belongings could have exacerbated the problem. Héricourt, physician, co-author of the serotherapy, disagrees with the methods adopted by health authorities, which would be illusory in the international defense against epidemic diseases. The author proposes a practical and effective double solution to the problem of the transmission of exotic diseases in sea voyages: the enhancement of the health pass and the modification of the role of the doctor on board. All passengers from contaminated territories should carry a health pass, under strict control by the authorities. The on-board doctor is responsible for establishing himself as a true agent of the health administration. As a hygienist, he unmasks potential patients, based on medical examinations during the trip, and prevents passengers who are considered healthy from contaminating the community, as they are effectively ill.

This study assesses the impact of school canteens on the performance and school retention of Beninese students at the primary level. The data used come from the PASEC2014 survey carried out on a representative sample of 3,033 pupils in CM2 and 732 pupils in CP. The propensity score matching method was used to evaluate the impact of canteens on student performance in reading and mathematics and on retention. The results show that canteens have a significant positive impact on student performance in reading and math and a negative impact on school dropout. In other words, canteens improve retention. Canteens improve the academic performance of private students more than those of public schools, even if they contribute more to the retention of children in public schools than those in private schools.

The history of the progress of scientific knowledge of viruses demonstrates that the tendency of researchers to get caught up in specific paradigms and theories about the causes of diseases does not allow them to see the threats of known and unknown pathogens (Honigsbaum, 2021). This is the case, for example, of the “germ theory” of the disease, presented by the German bacteriologist Robert Koch and his French colleague Louis Pasteur, in the 1880s. The bacteriological paradigm of human flu, when defended by Richard Pfeiffer in 1892, delayed the understanding of its viral etiology for decades. Unfortunately, it was rare the man of science who dared challenge the authority of Koch and his disciples. In this article, we intended to contribute to the elaboration of a scientific image of viruses, confronting it, whenever necessary, with the ontology of everyday life. For Dennett (2021), the scientific image is something that has to be learned at school, and most people acquire a superficial knowledge of it. Nevertheless, in our relationship with viruses, we have to learn what “things” to remove from our ontology of everyday life and what new categories to introduce to create an ontology of the scientific image of viruses, underpinning our understanding of these unique entities that challenge scientific paradigms. It is in this context that the approach to the process of production of scientific knowledge has been identified as being of fundamental importance to understanding Science and Virology has a historically contextualized human activity.
