Outcomes of a virtual exchange English program between a Japanese and an Indonesian junior high school
This paper describes the design and outcomes of an international virtual exchange program using English as a lingua franca. The exchange was between junior high schools in Japan and Indonesia. While students did not express a strong interest in English as such before the program, they thought that English and communication skills were most useful for their future, Although they wanted mostly to learn about the other country and its culture, and remembered most communicating with their partners, what they felt they learned most was how to communicate in English.departmental bulletin pape
Critical issues in special support education : Educational need and reasonable accommodations
The study discusses two issues related to special needs education, namely, educational needs and reasonable accommodation. The reason for focusing on educational needs is that the percentage of students eligible for special support education has rapidly increased since it began to be provided in 2007 in Japan. In this field, the focus has shifted from disabilities to the educational needs of students. However, although the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology uses educational needs, the actual support that students receive continue to emphasize disabilities rather than educational needs. Based on the problem-solving model (Hoshikawa, 2005), the study proposed that the educational needs of students should be considered, wherein the amount of support provided is balanced by actual support for the target student and providing solutions for their problems. Second, reasonable accommodation in education differs from reasonable accommodation in welfare. Based on the Law on the Prohibition of Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities, in order to advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities, the express will of the concerned person is necessary. In the field of education, however, a few cases of educational accommodation lack this process. The study proposed that, based on the objective of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, expressing their will is necessary for the concerned parties to engage in mutual discussion between school personal and students with disabilities and for the assignment of counselors to implement reasonable accommodation in the field of education.departmental bulletin pape
Enhancing learning in physical education : Applying “open body” and affordance
This study aims to organize physical education classes based on generative education and apply the “open body” and affordance theory for semantic generation to ensure children’s learning. Physical education should assume the “open body” for basic physical experience, and a class design generating a meaning to learn should be identified. I am going to produce the special experience (yokai taiken), which is an experience of the generation, by means of the “open body”. According to affordance theory, it entails providing a situation in which the child’s body begins to move and appropriately opens to the world. Physical and generative communication that allows students to explore together is effective in class. While the generation of meaning is required in learning, it is necessary to reaffirm the importance of physical and generative communication using the body as a medium, which emphasizes a live feeling, especially in physical education classes.departmental bulletin pape
Historical perspectives and contemporary issues on the cross-curricular approaches : towards the development of cross-cutting competencies
According to the present Course of Studies in Japan, competencies include knowledge, skills, meta-learning, and character. Cross-cutting competencies, that are understood as transversal, multifunctional and context-independent, are necessary for all learners and have to be developed by means of the cross-curricular approaches. Thus, in this article, from the theoretical and practical viewpoints, firstly historical perspectives of the cross-curricular approaches are reviewed and secondly contemporary issues are highlighted. As a conclusion, it is the intrinsic issues that there are two approaches to develop cross-cutting competencies, that is, one is context-dependent approach towards the development of holistic competences and the other is situated learning approach towards the development of portable, dependable and sustainable competences.departmental bulletin pape
