Effects of L1 Phonotactic Constraints and Orthography on L2 Word Segmentation
The aim of this study was to determine the effects of L1 phonotactic constraints and orthography on L2 word segmentation. Native Japanese speakers with a high level of English proficiency (JH), those with a low level of English proficiency (JL) and native English speakers (ES) performed a word spotting task and detected CVN (e.g., pen) targets and CVNC (e.g., pend) targets inbisyllabic non-words either in a context with clear boundaries (e.g., pinkfem) or in a context with ambiguous boundaries (e.g., pinklem). The results revealed that the ES and the Japanese speakers responded to CVNC target words faster and more accurately than to CVN targets both in Experiment 1 and Experiment 2. They syllabified the target words to identify them while being affected by the Possible Word Constraints (PWC). In addition, ES did not respond to non-words with /?/ to detect CVN words. Examination of the Links between Ego-Resiliency and Multidimentional Self-Concept in Junior High School Students
The relationship between ego-resiliency and self-concept among junior high school students is reported in this study. Participants( N = 418; mean age = 13.31), including 203 boys and 215 girls, responded to the Self-Description QuestionnaireⅡ Short Version( SDQII-S; Marsh et al., 2005) and the Ego-Resiliency89( ER89; Block & Kremen,1996). SDQII-S subscales were positively associated with the ER89. Same-Sex Relationship, Opposite-Sex Relationship, and General Self-Concept showed strong association( r > .40). Results suggest that the peer and physical areas of self-concept may play a role in the development of ego-resiliency. No signifi cant gender or grade diff erence in ego-resiliency was found. Girls scored signifi cantly lower on the Physical, Appearance, Same-Sex Relationship, and Math subscales, while boys scored signifi cantly higher on the Honesty and Verbal Self-Concept subscales. Second-grade students reported signifi cantly lower Physical and Math Self-Concept compared to their fi rst- and third-grade counterparts. Characteristics of Filtrates From Soil Treated by Ozone
Ozone soil treatment is very effective not only in exterminating soil-born worms but also in enhancing plant growth. According to the authors’ previous works, vegetables cultivated in ozone-treated soil showed enhanced plant growth. In order to understand the mechanism behind the effectiveness of ozone-treated soil in boosting plant growth, in this study filtrates were extracted from ozone-treated soil and were examined by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry. Two types of soil-commercial soil and natural andosol-were treated by ozone in both infrared-transparent and infrared-absorbing chambers. The increased nitrogen content was notably higher in the andosol in comparison to the commercial soil. In addition, the filtrates extracted from the ozone-treated soils showed brown coloration, corresponding to absorbance at approx. 300 to 600 nm and indicating the generation of fulvic acid, which is a biostimulant. Therefore, it can be considered that biostimulants such as fulvic acid are generated after ozone treatment of soil and activate microorganisms around the plant’s roots, which leads to enhanced plant growth. Moreover, the filtering of ozone-treated soil can be a unique method to produce a biostimulant in a very short time.journal articl
