Cell attachment defines sensitivity to cold stress via the Hippo pathway
Get PDFAlthough cells are frequently maintained at cold temperatures during experiments, the effects of cold stress on cell viability and subsequent cellular conditions remain elusive. In this study, we investigated the effects of cold stress on cancer cells under various culture conditions. We showed that cold stress induces ferroptosis, a form of cell death characterized by lipid peroxidation, in sensitive cancer cell lines. High cell density and serum starvation activate the Hippo pathway and suppress cold-induced cell death. Genetic deletion of Hippo pathway components enhances cold stress susceptibility. Furthermore, the cell attachment status influences the response to cold stress, with suspended cells showing greater resistance and faster recovery than attached cells. This study highlights the importance of cellular conditions and the Hippo pathway in the handling and storage of cancer cells at cold temperatures, thereby offering insights into experimental and clinical contexts.journal articl

Get PDFMany traditional Japanese merchant houses were destroyed in the castle town of Kumamoto by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake. As a land use change of those sites, many coin-operated parking lots were built. Secondly, the sites of the traditional Japanese merchant houses were reconstructed into apartment buildings, resulting in the partial loss of the castle town's historic landscape. Coin-operated parking is also a temporary facility when buildings are not immediately built on cleared land, and changes in the castle town landscape must be continuously observed in the future.departmental bulletin pape
School Teachers’ Perspectives on Support and Accommodations for Students with Diverse Educational Needs
Get PDFThis study explores the awareness and attitudes of school teachers regarding support and accommodations for students with diverse educational needs, including disabilities, minority backgrounds, challenging family circumstances, and school refusal. A survey of 300 teachers from elementary, middle, and high schools focuses on their perspectives across five key areas: gender dysphoria, foreign students, developmental disabilities, school refusal, and challenging family environments like poverty or maltreatment. The results show notable differences in teachers' willingness and ability to provide accommodations across educational settings. While many teachers are willing to support foreign students and those with developmental disabilities, there is hesitancy regarding adjustments for gender dysphoria. Teachers' efforts are often hindered by a lack of resources, time, and systemic support within the school framework. High school teachers, in particular, are less likely to see the need for certain accommodations compared to their elementary counterparts, suggesting the importance of targeted training and resources for providing support within regular classrooms at higher levels. Overall, while teachers' awareness of diverse educational needs is increasing, more efforts are required to provide them with the resources and understanding necessary to offer comprehensive support within regular classroom settings.departmental bulletin pape
Mural painting at Amakusa's Bouyoukaku : Art that embodies the charm of the region
Get PDFThis is a research paper on the possibility of revitalizing the local area through outdoor mural production. Outdoor mural production is done within a limited schedule, budget, and number of people. We will create high-quality works while taking these restrictions into consideration. Our goal is to create art that embodies the charm of the region and is useful for tourism in the region. We have further refined our approach to mural production and clarified seven ideas to create high-level art works. 1. What should be done (motivation for production: ask yourself questions) 2. Form a hypothesis (think about what will happen if you do this) 3. Research the subject (understand the reality of the site) 4. Preparation (original drawing, materials, personnel, schedule, funds, etc.) 5. Production 6. Re-imagining during production (effectively utilizing the uncertainty of art production) 7. Completion (reflection, leading to the next production) In line with this, it is a record of production by a large group of people in the Shimoda Onsen area of Amakusa City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Painting has the potential to revitalize the region and move events. The ideas of artists with a good heart have the power to break through situations. The planning and implementation of a lesson concerning the theory and method of education utilizing information and communication technology
Get PDFKumamoto university faculty of education has introduced a mandatory one-credit second-year course titled "Education and utilization of ICT" in the academic year 2023. This course was established in response to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology's new curriculum that emphasizes the “Theory and method of education utilizing information and communication technology.” This paper provides an overview of the course conducted in 2023, including its content and an evaluation of the course. The distinctive features of this course include: (1)collaborative learning through group discussions and activities, (2)the one-to-one use of tablet use for both individual and group tasks, (3)experiential learning simulating elementary and junior high school classroom practices, and (4)formative assessment through reflective writing. The number of characters written in students' reflective writing was adopted as a quantitative indicator to measure the students' activity levels. The result showed that the number of characters in the final class was approximately double that of the first class, indicating that the students were actively participating in the class. Since the evaluations of the reflection sheets were returned to each student, the students understood the points that the instructor evaluated and were motivated to improve their own evaluations. Furthermore, the students understood the significance of the reflective writing and actively engaged in self-reflection. A post-course survey revealed that over 90% of students expressed satisfaction with the course,s objectives, grading criteria, goal alignment, instructional design, pacing, and teaching materials, providing strong evidence of the course's effectiveness. Moreover, over 90% of students indicated that the course had fostered a broad interest in education, highlighting its suitability as a component of teacher training programs.departmental bulletin pape
