A Research on "Virtual Accent" in Sichuan Mandarin
Get PDFThis paper introduces the notion of “virtual accent” and utilizing this concept to classify “Chuanpu”（ Mandarin with Sichuan accent） into three types based on the degree of speakers’ local awareness. It analyzes the differences in phonological features using representative visual materials for each type. As a result of the analysis, variations in the types and frequencies of phonological features were observed between natural “Chuanpu” spoken by local speakers, “Chuanpu” spoken by individuals from other regions, and deliberate “Chuanpu” spoken by local speakers to emphasize dialectal features. “Chuanpu” spoken by individuals from other regions demonstrates deviations from the southwestern Mandarin in Sichuan, while intentional “Chuanpu” spoken by local speakers exhibits differences in the frequency of features compared to natural “Chuanpu”. The findings of this paper suggest the possibility of varied phonological variations within the same dialect due to differences in intention.departmental bulletin pape
