    Functional outcome in Olecranon fracture managed by tension band wiring

    Background: The most common causes of Olecranon process fractures are road traffic accident, fall and physical assault. The present study was conducted to assess functional outcome in Olecranon fracture managed by tension band wiring. Materials & Methods: 102 patients of olecranon fractures of both genders were treated with tension band wiring (TBW) technique. The type of fracture was recorded with Mayo classification. Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) was recorded. Results: Out of 102 patients, males were 60 and females were 42. Mayo score was excellent in 52%, good in 20%, fair in 16% and poor in 12%. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). Patient satisfaction score was 10 seen in 35%, 9 in 25%, 8 in 12%, 7 in 10% and 6 in 8% patients. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). Conclusion: Tension band wiring is treatment of choice for displaced and slightly comminuted fractures of olecranon

    Assessment of outcome of orthodontic mini dental implants: An observational study

    Background: Successful orthodontic therapy has always depended upon on intraoral anchorage with a great resistance to displacement. Osseointegrated implants are considered reliable sources of anchorage for orthodontists hence; the present study was undertaken for assessing the outcome of orthodontic Mini dental implants. Materials & methods: A total of 100 patients were enrolled. In all the involved patients, one or more self-drilling mini-screws were inserted. Orthodontic mini-implants were considered successful when they proved a perfect skeletal anchorage during the entire treatment period (independent from the period's length) without sign of mobility. All the results were recorded and analysed using SPSS software. Results: Success was observed in 85 percent of the cases. Failure was seen in 15 percent of the cases. Among the failure cases, inflammation was the cause in 10 percent of the cases while screw fracture was seen in 5 percent of the cases. Conclusion: Under the  hands of skilled  and experienced clinician,  self-drilling orthodontic mini-implants had excellent prognosis

    Background:  The current trend of treatment, using antibiotics has definitely helped improve patient outcome and prevent infectious disease however the irrational and unregulated use these drugs has created a havoc of antibiotic resistance. The Worldwide spread of the antibiotic resistant organisms has gradually created the threat of antimicrobial insufficiency and is leading us back to an pre-antibiotics era. Patients infected with these antibiotic resistant organisms are likely to face long durations of hospital stay, increased cost of treatment and require treatment with second? and third?line drugs, which may be more toxic and less effective.  Medical students are going to be primary care physicians to serve the community. These future prescribers are frontline fighters against antimicrobial resistance, by rationally prescribing the antibiotics and promoting patient awareness. There are sufficient evidences to support that newly licensed doctors / prescribers are not adequately trained to prescribe medications safely. Lack of adequate training during medical degree course may be one of the reasons for that.     Assessment of the effect of adhesion boosters on shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets on bleached teeth

    Background: The bleaching procedure results in damage to the outer enamel layer by forming porosities, which leads to demineralization and modification in the calcium–phosphate ratio. The present study was conducted to assess the effect of adhesion boosters on shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic brackets on bleached teeth. Materials & Methods: 60 maxillary premolars teeth were randomly divided equally into 2 groups. Group I were bleached teeth and group II had non-bleached teeth. Each group was further divided equally into 3 subgroups (n = 10) depending on the type of adhesive booster used (Enhance LC, All-bond 2, and no adhesive booster [control]). Maxillary premolars brackets were bonded. Debonding was done with a universal testing machine, and the SBS was recorded. Results: The mean shear bond strength (MPa) in Group IA was 10.5, in IB was 13.2, in IA was 10.5, in IC was 14.3, in IB was 13.2, in IC was 14.8, in IIA was 9.8, in IIB was 11.2, in IIA was 9.8, in IIC was 12.3, in IIB was 11.2 and in IIC was 12.8. The difference was significant (P< 0.05). Conclusion: Adhesive boosters increased the shear bond strength of both bleached and non-bleached teeth significantly

    The study of the perception of diabetes mellitus among the people of Petaling Jaya in Malaysia

    Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide medical problem with lack of knowledge, high costs, and maximum cause of mortality. The assessment of knowledge is very important about diabetes mellitus and its causes, symptoms, complications, risk factors among the general population in Petaling Jaya due to gradual increase in diabetes and its complications among patients. Therefore, this study was conducted to analyze the perception of diabetes mellitus among the people residing in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. This is descriptive cross-sectional study which included 400 samples of various ages, sexes, ethnicities, income levels, education levels and family history of diabetic patients from ten policlinics in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia. A validated questionnaire with five elements was used for this study. The collected data from the respective respondents were analyzed through SPSS software. SPSS has been used to analyse the demographic profile of the respondents, as well as perform exploratory factor analysis and multiple regression analysis. The study's findings indicated that general knowledge of diabetes mellitus, knowledge of risk factors of diabetes, knowledge of symptom of diabetes mellitus, knowledge of complications of diabetes mellitus are factors that significantly affect perception of diabetes mellitus among the people residing in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia

    Designing wastewater treatment plant by using biosynthesized titanium oxide nanoparticles

    In this research, a lab scale wastewater treatment plant was locally designed as a continuous culture of activated sludge and using dual water purification system and titanium oxide nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs). Biosynthesis of TiO2NPs and characterization were done, then nanofilter was prepared by tightly wrapping the filter with gauze and moistened it with 1% TiO2 NPs solution until saturation, a control filter was also prepared. Wastewater sample was passed through each filter. The results showed that the TiO2 NPs filter was improved their quality as showed the values of  physical, chemical and biological properties of wastewater which included turbidity that decreased from 561 to became 2.9 NTU, the total solid and total suspended solid were decreased from (1820, 1217 mg/l) to (421, 2 mg/l) respectively, the biological and chemical oxygen demands were decreased from (256, 410 mg/l)  to became (50, 41.5 mg/l) respectively. The NO3-1, PO4-3, SO4-2 were reduced from ( 100, 8.2, 78) to (6.8, 0.9, 48) respectively. Additionally heavy metals were successfully removed and total plate count, total coliform, total fecal coliform and total fungi were highly decreased
