Drug addiction is a major public health crisis that affects individuals, families, and communities around the world. The negative impacts of drug abuse are far-reaching, including increased rates of crime, health problems, economic hardship, and social discord. Addressing the drug addiction epidemic requires a multi-faceted approach that combines prevention, treatment, and policy interventions. One key component of an effective strategy to combat drug addiction is legislation and policy reform. Lawmakers and policymakers play a crucial role in shaping the legal and regulatory environments that influence patterns of drug use and access to addiction treatment. This study examines how legislation and policy can be leveraged to reduce drug addiction and its associated harms

    Get PDF
Background: To improve patient outcomes, pharmacy, nursing, and laboratory sciences must work together seamlessly due to the complexity of modern healthcare. However, the potential of integrated care is hampered by ongoing deficiencies in multidisciplinary education, operational procedures, and communication. A multidisciplinary strategy that unifies the knowledge of several disciplines is needed to address these issues and create a holistic healthcare model. Aim: This paper aims to explore the intersections between pharmacy, nursing, and laboratory sciences, identify systemic gaps that impede collaboration, and propose strategies to foster effective interdisciplinary integration. Methods: A thorough study of the literature was done with an emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches in healthcare systems around the world. In order to find effective integration models, key case studies were examined. Qualitative insights were obtained through surveys and interviews with pharmacy, nursing, and laboratory science practitioners. To measure the advantages of collaboration, patient outcomes in integrated vs siloed healthcare systems were compared. Results: The results point to several important obstacles, such as compartmentalized operations, mismatched communication channels, and a lack of interdisciplinary training.&nbsp

The impact of value-based care models: The role of nurses and administrators in healthcare improvement

    Get PDF
Background: Value-based care (VBC) models, which emphasize bettering patient outcomes while cutting costs, are a revolutionary approach to healthcare delivery. VBC aligns incentives with quality rather than quantity by moving away from volume-driven care and toward outcome-focused treatments. The increasing prevalence of chronic illnesses, rising healthcare expenses, and inequalities in access to care are all addressed by these models. Patient-centered medical homes (PCMHs), bundled payment models, and accountable care organizations (ACOs) are important elements. Notwithstanding their potential, VBC models have drawbacks, including workforce preparedness, data system compatibility, and equitable application across a range of demographics. Aim: this work is to investigate the theoretical underpinnings, methods of implementation, and results related to VBC models. It also looks at the roles that nurses and health administrators have played in improving the planning, implementation, and assessment of these models. Methods: A thorough analysis of case studies, policy papers, and peer-reviewed literature was carried out. The operationalization of VBC, technology integration, and the contributions of interdisciplinary teams to raising the standard of care and reducing costs are the main topics of the analysis. Results: The results show that VBC models improve patient satisfaction, improve chronic illness management, and drastically lower hospital readmissions.  &nbsp

Ventilators types and importance for COVID-19 patients: An updated review article for pharmacists

    Get PDF
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the vital role of ventilators in managing severe respiratory failure in patients, particularly those with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). As the virus primarily targets the respiratory system, mechanical ventilators have become indispensable in treating critically ill patients. However, the unprecedented demand for ventilators has highlighted shortages in essential equipment, especially in resource-constrained settings. Aim: This review aims to provide pharmacists with an updated understanding of the role of ventilators in managing COVID-19 patients, focusing on innovations in ventilator design and use. Methods: A literature review was conducted to assess the types of ventilators used during the COVID-19 pandemic, their mechanisms, and the development of low-cost ventilator solutions. The study also evaluated Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) guidelines issued by the FDA for ventilators during the pandemic. Results: The review identified that mechanical ventilators, particularly invasive ones, played a critical role in the survival of patients with ARDS. Innovations, such as the O2U ventilator, addressed shortages by offering a cost-effective, easy-to-use design. Bench-top and animal testing demonstrated its effectiveness in delivering accurate, time-cycled ventilation. Conclusion: The review highlights the importance of accessible ventilators in managing respiratory failure during pandemics.&nbsp

Development and implementation of a digital quality assurance solution for anesthesia technology: Enhancing efficiency, proactive risk management, and real-time incident response

    Get PDF
In anesthesia technology, rigorous checklists are essential to ensure patient safety by verifying equipment functionality, confirming the presence of necessary supplies, and identifying issues before they impact procedures. However, traditional paper-based checklists, which can contain up to 110 items, often lead to “checklist fatigue,” where repetitive, exhaustive checks can overwhelm technologists and lead to human error, missed steps, and delays in responding to equipment or system issues. Additionally, quality control logs for vital resources, including blood and medication fridges, are often fragmented, making it difficult for technologists to maintain a comprehensive view of equipment readiness. Inspired by high-reliability organizations (HROs) such as aviation, this study explores the development and implementation of a digital, interactive Quality Assurance (QA) solution aimed at transforming checklist management, risk assessment, and real-time equipment monitoring
