Analysis of Latin American literature through a mathematical lens

    Get PDF
Several of the most influential Latin American writers were interested in the sciences. Moreover, a handful showed an affinity to mathematics since childhood, eventually following careers as physicists, engineers, and mathematicians before turning their attention to the arts. In the end, they became novelists, essayists, and poets, who made significant contributions to their field. There is a large amount of existent traditional literature analysis research on Latin American authors. In the last sixteen years, research has shifted to include a focus on the connection between math and literature. However, this research focuses on interpreting the ideas of the universally acclaimed writer Jorge Luis Borges, studying his scientific thinking through his works, and demonstrating the writings included both basic and advanced math concepts even though he lacked a formal mathematical and scientific formation. Currently, there is a gap in the research that ignores the influential Latin American authors who were also prolific in mathematics. As a math and engineering student, I am interested in studying the work of Latin American writers with academic backgrounds in STEM fields--specifically mathematics. I intend to examine the writings of Ernesto Sabato, Guillermo Martinez, and Nicanor Parra for explicit math terminology and concepts

What are the factors contributing to eating disorders among adolescents?

    Get PDF
Eating disorders are defined by a disturbance in eating habits that may be either excessive or insufficient food intake. Eating disorders are affecting adolescents with increasing frequency. The most common eating disturbances among adolescents are Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge-Eating Disorder. Those critical psychiatric conditions are influenced by various factors. Although has not been definite proof for the cause of these abnormalities, there is an existing consensus suggesting it is a range of biological, psychological, and social factors. This paper thus provides an overview of previous studies related to psychosocial and biological effects on the development of eating disorders in young adults. It is hoped that additional large prospective risk factors studies coupled with prevention programs targeting the implicated risk factors will shed additional light on the etiologic processes that give rise to these pernicious disorders and permit the development of more effective preventive and treatment interventions

The current difficult situation in the South Caucasus is the result of inter-ethnic conflicts, territorial and other disputes, as well as conflicts of interest of third parties in the region. The importance of Georgia in the region is determined primarily by its geographical location, which makes the country a central hub for transport communications. In this context, achieving stability in the South Caucasus is an important task for all participants in the international political process, realizing their interests in this region

The ability of children to predict the mental state of others (theory of mind) is very important in socialization. Reading storybooks can connect children with the views, desires, and beliefs of others. This study aims to determine the effect of reading storybooks on the development of Theory of Mind (ToM) children aged 4-5 years. The measurement of ToM uses the ToM scale developed by Wellman and Liu, and reading a storybook is measured using a questionnaire. The research subjects were 145 children aged 4-5 years (48-71 months, M = 60.38, SD = 5.41) and their parents. Sampling was done using the purposive sampling technique. Test the research hypothesis using simple regression analysis. The results of the study found that R = 0.109, R2 = .012, p> 0.05, meaning that reading storybooks did not significantly affect the development of ToM in preschool children
