Representation of Dewi Sri in Balinese farming ceremonies: A multimodal study
This research applies a multimodal study to discover how Balinese people represent Dewi Sri as the goddess of rice and fertility through language and visuals in Balinese farming ceremonies. Therefore, this research analyzed the ideational function of the language and the representational meaning of visuals. This research is a qualitative study. The results show that language and visual elements work together to reveal and explain the representation of Dewi Sri in the ceremonies. The language elements show material processes as the dominant process and further, explain the form of Dewi Sri in ceremonial activities. The visual elements show symbolic suggestive representation processes as the dominant processes and identify the representative value of Dewi Sri. Furthermore, this research also discusses why the Balinese people honor Dewi Sri
L2 learners’ pronunciation of English phonetic sounds: An acoustic analysis with software Praat
Pronouncing English sounds correctly is not an easy task for second language (L2) learners because of the influence of their mother tongue. Empirical studies, based on first language (L1) interference, have investigated L2 learners’ pronunciation problems. However, these studies rarely focused on students’ development in pronunciation, and their results lack validity and reliability because of their mere employment of L2 English teachers as pronunciation assessors. The present study, using the acoustic software Praat as the instrument and taking a native speaker as the comparison, investigated Chinese L2 English learners’ problems and improvement in pronouncing the English sounds that do not have exact counterparts in Chinese. Data analysis revealed that the participants manifested different degrees of pronunciation accuracy with the target English sounds; their mispronunciations of consonants were mainly due to lacking voicing, wrong manners, and wrong places of articulation, while their mispronunciations of vowels were attributed to their improper tongue position, mouth opening, and diphthongization; and that higher-proficiency students tended to have greater pronunciation accuracy. The findings were discussed with reference to the literature, and pedagogical implications were provided at the end
The representation of Zen Buddism in Ikebana flower arrangement of Ikenobou School
This study aims to describe the philosophy emerges from Ikebana (the Japanese flower arrangement) of Ikenobou school/stream and the representation of beauty concept according to Zen Buddhism in Ikenobou’s ikebana. The research data was contained of seven (7) characteristics of Zen Buddhism according to Hisamatsu Shin’ichi namely: fukinsei, kanso, shizen, kokou, yuugen, datsuzoku, and seijaku within five (5) Ikebana flower arrangements from Ikenobou school namely: rikka, shoka, moribana, nageire, and jiyuka. As the result showed: 1) the prominent characteristic was Seijaku which found in the four Ikebana styles in twenty-one pieces, meanwhile the least characteristics were Fukinsei and Kanso found in two pieces of flower arrangements whereas the Kokou characteristic was absent in all flower arrangements; 2) the representation of beauty philosophy found in the flower arrangement of Ikenobou school/stream through its Ikebana styles were: (a). The 自由化 (Jiyuka) style represented characteristic of: 不均斉 (fukinsei) or asymmetrical, 自然 (shizen) or naturalness, and 脱俗 (datsuzoku) or free from bonds/ties. (b). The 昇華正風一種いけ (Shoka Shofutai Isshuike) style represented the characteristics of 簡素 (kanso) or simplicity. (c). The 立花 (rikka) style represented the characteristic of 幽玄 (yuugen) or deep meaning and (d). 昇華新風 (shoka shinputai) represented the characteristic of 静寂 (sijaku) or stillness/silence
Suicide in an Akan Language Novel: A focus on L. D. Apraku’s Aku Sika
Suicide in fiction can promote insights into perceptions of, and attitudes about suicide ideation and behavior in a society. This article uses the novel Aku Sika as a case in point. Aku Sika is a novel set in Ghana in the 1950s. A young married woman attempts to end her life to avoid imminent disgrace. The king’s youngest wife, Aku, plots to commit suicide in response to rivalry and evil machinations of the king’s senior-most wife, S?kyeraa. Aku suffers from a hand deformity caused by a childhood accident and had been successfully hiding the deformity from public view. Due to her extraordinary beauty, the king selects her as a wife unbeknownst to him that she had a physical handicap, this in a society with a cultural prohibition barring kings from marrying physically handicapped brides. S?kyeraa swears under oath that she should be executed if it cannot be proven that Aku was not physically handicapped, A date was set for Aku to reveal her hand to the public. She decided to self-destruct rather than face public ignominy. On the banks of a major river where she planned to die by suicide, the river spirit appeared and healed her deformed hand
Gender in the dock: An analysis of moral decadence in Amma Darko’s Faceless (2003) and Not Without Flowers (2007)
It happens sometimes that culture or the tradition to which we belong weighs heavy on our shoulders, and distresses us to an extent that we lose all sense of morals and drift into decadence. In reference to literature, moral decadence designates a corrosive process or situation of deterioration and decline in society’s ethical codes and sexual morality. In her perspective to dismantle the patriarchal culture, Amma Darko exposes the moral decline to which her society is prey and points an accusing finger at the gender-oriented system. The purpose of this article is to examine how gender and the standards that go with it can influence social depravity and the mounting loss of moral values among individuals. Stressing the writer’s objectivity and her catharsis-based approach as therapy, this analysis of Amma Darko’s Faceless and Not Without Flowers allows to have an off-screen look at the hideous consequences of gender prejudice. As they want or fail to meet the demands of the sexist ideology, both male and female, central and secondary characters are revealed to find solace in illicit deeds and amorality
Games and mental skills for development cognitive in mathematics of middle basic students
The research seeks to improve the thinking skills and abilities of high school students in the "Bachillero" Educational Unit through the implementation of mental games. These games promote reflection, thus improving the quality of life of students in difficult times. Various mental games have been developed that stimulate different reflections on the applied topics, achieving significant learning in different teaching areas. The methodology used in the research was based on a bibliographic search with an inductive approach. Relevant information was collected to demonstrate existing and probable situations. The objective is to allow students to develop critical-reflective thinking that allows them to face everyday challenges and problems differently. This research stands out for its innovative approach, raising the level of students' thinking and overcoming the limitations of the current educational environment. It seeks to address the deficiencies that prevent students from valuing the teacher's educational actions to improve their academic performance. It is essential to highlight that this proposal implies continuous and lasting training, establishing a close relationship between the teacher and the student
Anti-suicide themes in popular Ghanaian music: A focus on Nacee’s Yewo Nyame A Yewo Adze
The current article presents the results of a content analysis of a popular Ghanaian gospel song with anti-suicide themes and lyrics that have great potential to prevent suicidal behavior among listeners. The analysis was conducted against a backdrop of public intimations that suicide rates in the country were rising. The results of the analysis show that several lines in the lyrical text implore the listener to resist suicide while offering messages of patience, hope and encouragement, that can serve as preventative to suicide. It is impossible to quantify the full impact of the song on listeners and there is no way of knowing how many suicides have been prevented by the lyrical text of the song and the accompanying video presentation of events captured in the video. That the song has had a powerful impact on people who listen to it is evident in the listeners/viewers comments left at the site of the song/video. The final segment of the article provides excerpts from some individuals’ experiences with the song. The message of hope in the song, that things will get better has had a major effect on people.
Investigation of the challenges encountered by Iraqi students in learning English language in international schools in Turkey
This research paper examines the problems Iraqi students face in international schools in Turkey in speaking and learning the English Language. This paper examines the student's difficulties in different stages. Moreover, to know the actual problems by which the students cannot speak or learn the English language fluently. Learning English considers an essential aspect of any student's life; considering that English is an international language, it is a demand of today's world. It is known that more people have learned it as a second language than native speakers. It is estimated that there are over 2 billion speakers of English in the world. English might be a popular language, but this does not necessarily mean it is a simple language to master. There are many challenges people, especially students, face when learning English; if a teacher can define and simplify these challenges, it might be easier to overcome these challenges. Teachers, teaching methods, curriculums, and even teaching policies differ from one country to another. 
Digital technology implementation towards English e-modul at engineering department in State Polytechnic of Bali
Technology utilization in English learning instruction has been a significant tool to increase the learners’ ability and comprehension in Polytechnic education. However, the absence of systematic and suitable digital English learning materials frequently impacts the decrease of students' urge in learning the lesson. This study aims to establish s systematic digital learning material suitable for the engineering department students at the Polytechnic State of Bali. This research applied the qualitative method which explained the students’ arguments for the use of e-module in the English lesson. The unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT) was used to analyze the data obtained from the students. The learners opined that the e-module provided important media which significantly escalate comprehension and eagerness of the English language. Although this e-module was beneficial, the urgency of generating the learning materials towards offline and online instruction ought to be conducted
Classroom management strategies on the teaching English to young learners at elementary school
Classroom management is vital in educating young English learners since children have weak self-control and teaching youngsters is different from teaching middle schoolers and adults. This study investigates the classroom management tactics used by English instructors at a private primary school, the teachers' motives for applying them, and the kids' impacts. Two English professors and 12 students participated. Different age and experience levels teach English. The researcher picked the 12 pupils because they could provide strategy knowledge. Classroom observation, teacher interviews, and a questionnaire provided the data. The strategies address three areas. Physical environment focuses on seating arrangement, sight, sound, comfort, and whiteboard and equipment usage; psycho-social management focuses on rules, feedback, and incentives; and classroom activity management manages time, solo, pair, and group work, and monitors the class. Reasons for using classroom management tactics include making the teaching-learning process operate smoothly, motivating students, supporting them in completing tasks, increasing classroom discipline, and building social skills. Students were more disciplined, pleased in the learning process, knew the lesson's goal, and were more focused and actively participated in learning when classroom management tactics were used
