The use of figurative expression: Novel the Doomsday Conspiracy by Sidney Sheldon
This writing is entitled “The Use of Figurative Expression in Novel ‘The Doomsday Conspiracy’ by Sidney Sheldon”. The discussion is focussed on the analysis of figurative expression in the novel. This study is aimed to identify the types of figurative expression found in the novel and to determine the meaning represented by the use of figurative expression in the novel. The novel entitled “The Doomsday Conspiracy” by Sidney Sheldon is chosen as the data source for this writing. The main theory is adopted from the book “Interpreting Literature” by Knickerbocker and Reninger (1963) about the theory of figurative language, namely about simile, metaphor, personification, synecdoche, hyperbole, metonymy, paradox, irony, dead metaphor, and allusion as a frame or reference. There are also some supporting theories, such as Halliday’s theory (1985) about the metaphorical modes of expressions and Leech’s theory (1974) about seven types of meanings. The finding of the analysis shows that the figurative expression used in the novel can be divided into three groups: (a) comparison included simile, metaphor and personification; (b) contradiction included hyperbole; and (c) connection included metonymy and allusion. But among these types of figurative expression, the groups of comparison, simile, metaphor and personification are those commonly applied in the novel, because they are used to describe the persona’s having a deep feeling which is brought by the main character in the novel
Social dialect variations in sasak monolingual society
Social dialect variation is diversity and richness of dialect owned by an individual or group in Sasak monolingual society. Moreover, the diversity of social dialect is also often used as a medium for transferring ideology, identity, and existence by an individual or group of individual or other groups. Thus, the purpose of this study is to describe the form of vocabulary choice in social dialect variation of Sasak community to show differences in speech who is high social status (superior) and low social status (inferior) between individuals or groups and between women and men. The theory used is social dialect variation form of Janet Holmes and critical analysis Norman Fairclough. The data was collected by observing methods and interview as well as the basic techniques and derivatives, observation and documentation methods. Sources of data gathered from Sasak speakers who are communicating. Data were analyzed by using a descriptive qualitative method which aims to make a systematic description, categorization, and patterning. Data are presented formally and informally. At last, this study resulted in different forms of social dialect variation by an individual or group and by women and men who can cause a physical-psychic intersection
Case marking forms in indonesian with reference to its translation into english
This paper aims at clarifying case marking forms in Indonesian and how the forms are translated into English. Case marking is the mechanisms that involve morphological forms (e.g. affixes or function words (e.g. ad position) which express the semantic roles or grammatical relations of the NPs in the clause (Song, 2001). The discussion of case marking in this paper include possessive marking, transitive and intransitive, Indonesian affixed verb based on noun, active and passive voice. Since there are loads of affixation processes in Indonesian which do not seem exist in English, case marking forms in Indonesian are worth analyzing in terms of how transfer of meaning takes place. Having done the analysis, it is found that case marking form in Indonesian is transformed into another form in English to transfer the meaning. The finding demonstrates clearly that languages in the world have their uniqueness that makes translation a challenging and interesting activity
The effect of scripted song as a teaching on english competence: 4th Grade Student of Primary School SD Saraswati Tabanan in Academic Year 2013/2014
This study aimed at investigating the effect of Scripted Songs as a teaching technique on English competence of the fourth-grade students of the primary school in SD Saraswati Tabanan in academic year 2013/2014. Posttest only controls group design was used as a research design. The population was all the fourth-grade students. Through Cluster Random Sampling technique, two classes were taken as the samples in this study, namely class 4B and 4C. Class 4B was assigned to the control group while class 4C as the experimental group. In total, seventy-five students were taken as representative of the population. The students in the experimental group were taught by using Scripted Songs, while the students in control group were taught by using Conventional Technique. At the end of treatment, both groups were given a posttest. The result of the posttest was then analyzed descriptively and inferentially. Based on the result of data analysis, it was found that the students who were taught by using Scripted Songs obtained a better result than those who were taught by using Conventional Technique. It was proven by the mean score of the experimental group was 79.05, while the control group was 69.5. Moreover, the result of the independent sample t-test showed that the value of t observed (tobs) was 5.000. It was higher than the value of t critical value (tcv) was 1.99 (?= 0.05). This proved that there was a significant effect on English competence between experimental and control group
The roles held by the suffix -mente in deriving spanish adjective with reference to adverb: Miguel de Cervantes’ El Quijote
There were several main topics discussed in this article, especially how the Spanish suffix -mente contributed in changing an adjective to an adverb. This writing also explained the kind of adjective which could be attached with the suffix -mente, as there was more than one kind of adjective in Spanish according to its gender, masculine and feminine. The data analyzed were taken from a novel entitled El Quijote by Miguel de Cervantes. Thus, the translation was applied to the data in this research. The method used was adopted from the previous research done by Sergi Torner. In the end of the research done, it was known that -mente¬ belonged to a derivational morpheme and worked the same way as the English suffix -ly. Because of this matter, the morphological theory was conducted in this research
