Utilizing Generative Adversarial Network for Synthetic Image Generation to Address Imbalance Challenges in Chest X-Ray Image Classification

    Get PDF
Deep learning-based classifiers need lots of image data to train. Unfortunately, not all real-world cases are supported by a huge amount of image data. One of the cases are images for classification of pneumonia infections with chest X-rays images. This study proposes a way of synthesizing chest X-rays with abnormal conditions in order to use the synthesized images for classification purposes. A GAN-based technique can generate synthetic images with greater quality that resemble original images thus can provide a more balanced data distribution than other approaches. To indirectly evaluate the quality of our GAN-based synthetic images, we used CNN-based classification architectures on diverse datasets. Three scenarios examined the effects of synthetic picture categorization. Scenario-1: adding 90% of synthesized images to the original images into the training dataset. Scenario-2: adding 50% of synthesized images to the original images. Scenario-3: adding 10% of synthesized image to the original images. The classification test revealed significantly increased F1 scores in all scenarios. Our study also emphasizes the significance of addressing the problem of imbalanced collections of chest X-ray images and the capability of GANs to alleviate this issue

Designing Persuasive Bin to Facilitate Waste Segregation in the Household Sector Through Design Thinking Application

    Get PDF
The increase in population causes an increase in the amount of public consumption, increasing the amount of waste. Based on databoks.katadata.co.id, households are known to be waste contributors. Then, based on the Katadata Insight Center (KIC) survey in 2019, it was found that 50.8% of households did not sort waste. The behavior of households is an important problem to be solved because mixed waste cannot be separated and recycled again. Seeing these conditions, it is necessary to design a waste bin to persuade households to perform waste-sorting activities. The waste problem is considered wicked, and design thinking is the appropriate method to approach it. Research with design thinking is carried out through understanding, observing, defining, creating ideas, prototyping, and testing stages. In testing the prototype, the persuasive level of the waste bin design was assessed using the Perceived Persuasiveness Questionnaire (PPQ). This research results in a waste bin consisting of four boxes equipped with an adjustable bulkhead, QR-Code, and removable sorting card that can make a sound when not throwing garbagePeningkatan populasi masyarakat menyebabkan peningkatan jumlah konsumsi yang berdampak pada meningkatnya jumlah sampah.

A Fractional-Order Food Chain Model with Omnivore and Anti-Predator

    Get PDF
A fractional-order food chain model is proposed in this article. The model is built by prey, intermediate predator, and omnivore. It is assumed that intermediate predator only eat prey and omnivore can consume prey and intermediate predator. But, prey has the ability called as anti-predator behavior to escape from both predators. For the first discussion, it is found that all solutions are existential, uniqueness, boundedness, and non-negative. Further, we analyze the existence condition and local stability of all points, that is point for the extinction of all populations, both predators, intermediate predator, omnivore, and point for the existence of all populations. We also investigate the global stability of all points, except point for the extinction of all populations and both predators. Finally, we preform several numerical solutions by using the nonstandard Grunwald-Letnikov approximation to demonstrate the our analytical results

Assessment of Small-Scale Microplastics Abundance and Characterization in Urban River: A Case Study in Metro River, Indonesia

    Get PDF
Microplastic pollution is a pressing environmental concern with detrimental effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. This study aimed to investigate microplastic contamination in a rapidly urbanizing area along a river and to examine the spatial distribution of microplastic abundance across the study area based on land use type. Seven sampling points were selected along the study site and microplastic samples were extracted using density separation and wet peroxidation (WPO) methods. The characteristics of the microplastic particles, including size, color, shape, and abundance, were analyzed to understand their properties. The results indicated that the microplastic abundance values ranged from 28.33 to 133.00 particles/liter, with an average of 73.55 particles/liter. Small microplastic particles (SMP), with sizes ranging from 1 μm to 1 mm, along with fragment shapes, and clear colors were predominant in the study area. A generalized additive model was utilized to assess the relationship between land use and microplastic abundance. The model demonstrated a significant influence of built-up areas on the presence of microplastics (p-value < 0.05), with an r2 value of 0.76. Residential areas near the river were identified as the likely primary sources of the microplastics

Urbanization, Land Scarcity and Urban Farmers' Mobility: Evidence from Ghana

    Get PDF
This study assessed how urban farmers survive land scarcity challenges in the midst of rapid urbanization in a developing country such as Ghana. As land scarcity becomes more pronounced in urban areas, farmers struggle to find a place to farm within the urban space but the numerous opportunities that come with farming within the city still inspires them to find spare lands and open spaces in the city to farm. Therefore, the study examined the factors that influence urban farmers’ mobility with respect to farmland in the midst of intense land scarcity. Reponses from 251 farmers were analyzed with both Tobit and Ordinary Least Squares (OLS). Land situation factors such as land ownership type, land scarcity challenges, and size of land were found to be associated with farmers’ mobility. Farm characteristics such as level of market benefits, intensity of vegetable production, and level of technology were also associated with farmers’ mobility within the city. Personal characteristics such as age, level of education, level of farmer engagement, and marital status also played a role. This implies urban farming sustainability requires conscious government efforts to include urban agriculture in its spatial planning decisions since there are numerous opportunities for farming within the city

The Effects of Homeownership on Social Capital

    Get PDF
Access to homeownership is becoming increasingly limited due to various factors related to a decline in social capital, including sense of stability, security, and community attachment. This study examined the relationship between homeownership and social capital in Indonesia at the household level while addressing endogeneity and heterogeneity issues. This research used panel data from the IFLS-4 and IFLS-5 surveys, employing a fixed-effect regression model with robust standard error and instrumental variables. The study found that homeownership significantly impacts social capital in Indonesia. Furthermore, the effect of homeownership differs between Java and non-Java households and between urban and rural households. The study also identified other significant influencing factors of social capital, such as household size and monthly income. It is concluded that policies aimed at increasing homeownership may positively impact social capital in Indonesia. This research has provided evidence of the heterogeneity of the effect of homeownership on social capital based on geographical location and household characteristics, suggesting that policymakers should develop policies to meet the specific needs of each group to maximize the positive impact of homeownership on social capital
