Bilingual Education and Learning Achievements in Anglophone and Francophone Sub-Saharan Africa
Background: There is limited evidence on the potential benefits of bilingual medium of instruction (MOI) in sub-Saharan Africa.
Purpose: This study examines the association between bilingual MOI and learning outcomes in Senegal and Zambia, analyzes how the association varies among students from different linguistic backgrounds, and estimates how consistent the relational patterns are between the two countries.
Design and methods: The study Employs hierarchical linear modelling with PISA for Development 2018 data.
Results: Results show that bilingual MOI is negatively associated with reading but not mathematics and science in Senegal, but it is not associated with any of these learning achievement measures in Zambia. However, the association may be positive or negative across student linguistic backgrounds in both countries. Moreover, the relational patterns between the countries may be consistent or inconsistent depending on the measure of learning achievements or whether we consider a direct or indirect relation. Implications of the findings were discussed

Purpose: This study aims to determine the effect of using the metacognitive and paraphrasing strategy on students’ reading comprehension.
Design and methods: This study was conducted by using experimental research. The population of this research was the students of the eleventh grade of SMA Methodist 5 Medan. The sample was 80 students of two classes chosen by using cluster random sampling. They were divided into two groups, 40 students in the experimental group and 40 students in the control group. The experimental group was taught using metacognitive and paraphrasing strategy while the control group was taught using the conventional method. The instrument for collecting data was 20 items of multiple-choice tests. It was given in pre-test and pos-test. After collecting the data, then the researcher analyzed the data by using t-test formula.
Results: The finding showed that the t-observe was 4.099 and t-table 1.990 at the level of significance ( α = 0.05 ) and the degree of freedom (df) 78. It means that observe is higher than t-table (4.099 > 1.990). Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) is accepted. It is proven that there was a significant effect of using metacognitive and paraphrasing strategy on students’ reading comprehension of narrative text
Indonesian story-telling ability based on image media of grade 1 students at MI Al-Mubarokah

The subjects in this study were students of class 1 MI Al-Mubarokah, which consisted of 20 students who were divided into 2 groups, namely 10 students as the experimental class and 10 other students as the control group.
Results: From the research results were analyzed using statistical analysis techniques. the p value is shown .000 < .05 that is indicated there is difference between the data mean of experiment and control class. Mean rank of experiment class is 27.05 while mean rank of control class is 13.95. it means the experiment class has higher mean than control. With this calculation the hypothesis can be concluded that picture media is improving the Indonesian story telling ability of the students. Results: The results of this study indicate that the experimental group taught using graphic media obtained an average pre-test average value post-test of 77 with a standard deviation of 16.36. Changes in learning outcomes are 42 by using graphic media. While the mean value of the pre-test in the control group was 37 with a standard deviation of 13.37 and the average value of the post-test was 52 with a standard deviation of 14.76. Changes in learning outcomes are 15 without using graphic media. Based on the hypothesis testing criteria at = 0.05, t observe = 3.59 and t table = 2.10 so that t observe > t table or 3.59 > 2.19 then Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. It can be concluded that there is a significant effect of the use of graphic media on the learning outcomes of fourth grade students in the Indonesian subject of instructional text material at MI Almunazomah, Caringin District, Bogor Regency
