The use of social media as a means of improving English skills
Background: Each user has their smartphone to do communication. The user tends to use social media to communicate each other. Now in pandemic of COVID 19, the teachers do mostly communication to the students and/or to the expatriate teacher are using English.
Purpose: This study is aim to reveal on teacher perspective on what extent that the social media help them to enrich the English skills.
Design and methods: This study is conducted by using narrative inquiry method. The narrative inquiry method aims to reveal certain topic referring to stories and/or experiences. There are 9 participants who works as teacher at international schools at Tangerang. The participants’ selection is using purposive sampling strategy as knowing the participants will give their stories to only their close friend. The data is validated by triangulation of data source technique. The triangulation of data source technique is done by crosschecking the data among participants’ responses.
Results: This study revealed that social websites and the content of media give more impact to the improvement of English skills of the teachers. This research recommends to investigate a certain categories social media on specific skills and/or to investigate a certain platform in promoting the English learning process
Correlation of blood muscle strength and waist flexibility to students’ roundhouse kick skills in Putera Sekar (Pencak Silat) academy
Background: Many fighters are not maximal in doing roundhouse kick, resulting in losses including causing injuries during the match, wasting energy because the shot that is shot does not hit the target.
Purpose: The aim of this study is know what extent the relationship between the explosive power of the leg muscles and the flexibility of the waist muscles on the skill of the roundhouse kick in the athletes of the Putera Sekar Kolat Tanah Abang Pencak Silat College.
Design and methods: This study used a correlation study method by examining the relationship between the explosive power of the leg muscles and the flexibility of the waist to the roundhouse kick skill. The samples in this study were 20 athletes who were still active in routine extracurricular activities. To process the required data from the flexibility test results (X1), anxiety test results (X2), and the scoring results of archery athletes, regression and correlation analysis techniques are used.
Results: There is a positive relationship between leg muscle explosive power and waist flexibility on roundhouse kick skill. According to the regression correlation analysis, it was obtained that the value of Fcount was 1.973 more than Ftable 3.59 and a significant value of 0.00 less than 0.05
Various conflicts of main characters in Steven Savile's novel “Stellaris: infinite frontiers”
oai:ojs2.alejournal.com:article/6Background: Characters face conflicts in a story. The way the characters’ acts, reacts, and deal with the obstacles will reveal about their qualities. Any conflict arise refers to represent something.
Purpose: The aim of this research was to find conflicts of the main characters in a novel "Stellaris: Infinite Frontiers" by Steven Savile.
Design and methods: The duration of the research was from 6th of March 2020 until 14th July 2020. Analytic descriptive was the method of the research. The steps of the research include: (1) preparing research data, (2) preparing support data, (3) processing the research and support data, (4) analyzing the research data. The total conflict data that were gathered from the novel was 40 data which was divided into four categories: against another, against group, against nature and against self.
Results: The result shows 11 conflicts against another, 10 conflicts against group, 10 conflicts against nature, and 9 conflicts against self. In total there are 40 conflicts that the researcher take from the novel
Types of profanity in a series “True Sight” by Valve on YouTube
Background: This research studies about profanity types made by professional players in the documentaries video True Sight by Valve on YouTube.
Purpose: The aims of this study are to recognize the applications of each profanity types, to explain the types of profanity word the utterances that used, and to find out the most frequent types of profanity types of the utterances that used by the professional players in documentaries video True Sight on YouTube.
Design and methods: To achieve the aims of the study, the writer uses Steven Pinker’s theory of profanity types to analyzing the data. This study is a qualitative which the writer interprets of utterances that contain the types of profanity words in this documentaries series.
Results: The result of study showed that 30 utterances of profanity word were successfully identified that made by the professional players. In this study, the writer found that the professional player uses all the types of profanity, such as, abusive swearing, idiomatic swearing, dysphemistic swearing, cathartic swearing and emphatic swearing. There are 32 types that identified out of 30 utterances uttered by the professional player which conclude 9 emphatic swearing or 28.1%, 7 cathartic and idiomatic swearing or 21.9% , 5 abusive swearing or 15.6%, and 4 dysphemistic swearing or 12.5%. So it can be concluded that the dominant profanity types is emphatic swearing, because this documentaries video contained many profanities of the professional player as a gamer in the gaming community who has a culture of not to speak in a formal conversation
Four square method for improving students’ writing ability in EF Teens & Kids Kalimalang
Background: Children are easily to speak up their idea directly but do not know how to shift it into proper writing. The children, English learners, need the writing aspect due to fulfill every English aspect especially in their school academic.
Purpose: This research is going to increase the students’ writing ability through eclectic method.
Design and methods: This research has another concept with drawing the eclectic method in different ways. The writer tries to put four square writing methods in order to apply the eclectic method in developing students’ writing ability in EF Kids and Teens Kalimalang. This research is a descriptive quantitative research which will be done by field work. In this research, the writer uses the descriptive and quantitative design to analyze the data. The instrument and variable of this research consist of several parts. They are the directive of teaching method, the directive of the test form, and the result test.
Results: The combining of Four Square Writing Method and classroom writing performance as Eclectic Method significantly improves the students’ score. It is clearly showed by the increasing of the mean score. The mean score of the pre – test is 68.46% while the mean score of the post – test is 79.13% which increased 10.46%
Euphemism types in the Washington Times online political articles: a study of semantic change
Background: There is a situation when people are discussing topics that are considered sensitive which labeled vulgar or inconsiderate such as death, religion, sex, racial issues or politics, the use of euphemism is very useful. By using the euphemism, it can turn unmentionable words into mentionable and less offensive. Turning the unmentionable or bad words into mentionable or good words that make euphemism give rise to semantic change through changing the sense of words.
Purpose: The aim of this research is to find the types of euphemism in The Washington Times online political articles.
Design and methods: This research applied descriptive qualitative method, while the data were collected by close reading and observing the words, phrases or clauses that contains the euphemism types in The Washington Times online political articles. This research applies the theory of Allan and Burridge for euphemism types
Results: As the results of representative data, the types of euphemism found in the articles are 3 metaphors, 1 remodeling, 9 circumlocutions, 1 abbreviation, 2 one-for-one substitutions, and 1 hyperbole. All of the euphemism types in this research are often used as the substitute expression in order to have the positive connotation and to save the readers from unpleasant topics or issues
Billingual phenomenon usage in presenting make up tutorial
Background: The writer interested to analyze the code switching and code mixing in Suhay Salim’s video because she is a bilingual speaker. She is able to speak both Bahasa and English. In each her video, Suhay Salim always uses code switching and code mixing.
Purpose: The objective of this research is to know the types of code switching and code mixing used in the video, and also to know the reasons why the speaker used code switching and code mixing in her YouTube video.
Design and methods: The data were collected through library research. The method of this research is descriptive qualitative method.
Results: The result of this analysis is indicated that: (1) Types of code switching that found are situational code switching and metaphorical code switching. (2) types of code mixing found are insertion and alternation. (3) while the reasons to use code switching and code mixing are talking about particular topic, real lexical need, interjection, repetition used for clarification, and expressing group identity
