Ability of students in completing mathematical story problems
Background: Elementary school must be a strong foundation to reach a higher level of education. This is inseparable from the beginning of the level of education starting from early childhood and kindergarten because it is a level of education to start the formation of children's character. One of the subjects given at every level of education is Mathematics. Mathematics is one of the sciences that has an important role in shaping the mindset of students, because in mathematics students are required to have the ability to think logically, systematically, analytically as well as problem solving abilities. Various attempts have been made by the teacher in increasing the ability of students to understand mathematics subjects. However, the expected results are still not optimal, even the learning and teaching process becomes unpleasant and tends to be boring for students. One of the math problems that is often found is the difficulty of students in solving story problems. Even though the story problem is a form of evaluation of the ability of students in understanding the basic concepts of mathematics that have been learned, in the form of questions about applying formulas.
Purpose: This study aims to examine the extent to which students' ability to work on math story problems. It could help teachers to find out the problems of students in working on math story problems and make students able to solve problems in the form of stories with the right method.
Design and methods: The research method used is qualitative methods. Qualitative research is research in accordance with the data, utilizing existing theories as explanatory material.
Results: The results of this study show that there are many problems in students working on math story problems, and the teacher's methods during learning must be improved so that students can understan
Serial image media for writing narrative text skills
Background: Using the media, the students are able to do proper sorting and treatment in learning activities.
Purpose: This study aims to determine the effect of the application of serial image media on writing narrative text skills.
Design and methods: This research uses a quantitative approach. The type used is a Quasi Experimental Design research, this design has a control group, but does not fully function to control the external variables that affect the implementation of the experiment. The research design used is the Non Equivalent Control Group Design.
Results: The result showed that the experimental group obtained an average score of 82.86 and the control group obtained an average score of 71.18. the use of serial image media has a positive effect on writing narrative text skills of stu-dents in grade V Cipinang Besar Utara 7 Elementary school
Evaluation on teaching English simple future tense on grade 7 at SMP Tunas Harapan Pasar Kemis
Background: Teaching languages has different ways from teaching another subjects.
Purpose: The objective of this research is to know the effectiveness of Active Learning Method in Teaching Simple Future.
Design and methods: This research is using an evaluation method. The research was conducted at the seventh grade of SMP Tunas Harapan, Pasar Kemis, Tangerang. The data were collected through observation, teaching learning process, pre-test and post-test, questionnaires. This program contains the planning, how to implement and improve the students’ English Grammar Simple Future through Active Learning Method. The exercise was a mean to evaluate the action conducted in research.
Results: The result of this research indicated that: (1) Using Active Learning Method in teaching simple future is one of a good solution to improve the students’ grammar skill, (2) it makes students are more easily in understanding and using simple future tense in daily activities, and (3) students become more active in responding the lessons or questions given by the teacher
Use of teacher's language style in the grade 3 learning process of Ciheuleut 1 Elementary School Bogor
Background: the communication pattern applied by the teacher becomes a vital thing to be discussed.
Purpose: This study aims to find the use of the language style used by the teacher.
Design and methods: The research approach used is a qualitative approach. The research method used is content analysis. The data analysis of this research was carried out through the Miles and Huberman flow model consisting of: 1) identification, 2) data reduction, 3) data presentation, 4) conclusion drawing and verification, and 5) final conclusions and recommendations.
Results: third grade teachers at SD Negeri Ciheuleut 1 in communicating with students tend to prioritize conveying messages over other things. What is meant here is close communication so that messages from the teacher will be easier and faster to be understood by students
Second grader students in WhatsApp group e-Learning process
Background: Learning supports is needed for being more effective and efficient in the process of students’ learning. In learning through WhatsApp, in fact students feel less interested because in WhatsApp learning is not interesting at all, with learning through WhatsApp or E-Learning many students hold smartphones every day but do not participate in this WhatsApp learning or learning E-learning.
Purpose: This study aims to determine the impact of WhatsApp group learning on distance learning activities of SDN Cijeruk 01 students, especially in grade 2.
Design and methods: This type of research is using a descriptive qualitative approach. The research subjects were parents or guardians of grade 2 elementary school students. Using triangulation validation between researchers with interview techniques.
Results: The results of this study indicate that SDN Cijeruk 01 in e-learning using WhatsApp group is not very effective and in the learning process students are accompanied by parents
Translation method in Indonesian best seller book of David J Schwartz
Background: the method of translation is a way to translate a text based on the purpose of the text or the message which the writer wants to send to the reader.
Purpose: This paper aims to identify the translation method which commonly use in The Magic of Thinking Big Book by David J Schwartz.
Design and methods: This study uses the descriptive method to analyze this book. The writer finds and get some data and then analyze the data and information by searching internet and library research.
Results: This study revealed six translation method in chapter five of The Magic of Thinking Big by David J Schwartz. Those of translation methods are: Literal Translation, Faithful Translation, Adaptation, Free Translation, Idiomatic Translation and Communicative Translation. However, from six methods which the writer finds, there is the most dominant one which the writer finds in that book. It is Free Translation method
Figurative language domination in a short story about an impoverished girl
Background: The dominant figurative language found in The Little Match Girl short story is pleonasm, metaphor and simile. This study is significance to know the message or meaning that the author wants to convey in his/her work.
Purpose: This study aims to identify the kinds of figurative language and finding the dominant of the figurative language that are found in The Little Match Girl short story.
Design and methods: This research used descriptive qualitative method. Data in the short story of The Little Match Girl is analyzed using the theory of figurative language.
Results: The results of this study show that there 8 kinds of figurative language; 4 data from pleonasm, metaphor and simile, 3 data from symbol, 2 data from personification and hyperbole, and 1 data from paradox and repetition
Compound words implementations in “flowers in the attic” novel by VC Andrews
Background: Compound word is a word that include of two elements (a root/a word/a phrase and a root/a word) formed a new word and new meaning. Compounding is very important word formation process to know, especially in learning morphology in linguistics where students are required to learn the origin of the word formed.
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find out the types and the meanings of compound words refers to theory of Plag, then to know the types of compound words mostly found in articles.
Design and methods: Method of this study used descriptive qualitative research. To collect the data, the writer used documentation technique. From four types of compound, nominal compound is often appearing, because nominal compound is compound words that indicate and refer to the single noun (person, thing, animals, etc.).
Results: This result also shows that the compound words not only create new word but also create new meaning. It can use to study about word formation especially in compounding
Teaching media in studying collocation for increasing students’ language intuition
Background: Teaching collocation to the students is not as easy as teaching grammar. Mastering collocation helps students to understand well the lesson given by the teachers and to use language to express their ideas properly.
Purpose: This study aims to investigate to what extent text used as teaching media for studying collocation.
Design and methods: A library research was done to gather information on teaching media for students that suitable for studying collocations for increasing language intuition.
Results: The texts that commonly contain collocation is a newspaper feature, a film review, a website for tourists, conversations, lectures, songs, and films
Factors of Students' Reading Lateness
Background: Reading is still considered trivial by Indonesian, especially parents of students.
Purpose: This research aims to find out what are the factors that cause students to be late in reading.
Design and methods: This research use a type of literature review research method. researchers seek information about research from several relevant journals and articles, read and record information obtained from data sources and compile research articles from data and information that has been collected. The author will discuss the factors of delay in learning to read in students.
Results: Some of the factors that students to be late in reading are: 1) external factors that can cause reading difficulties are family and school conditions and 2) internal factors that are found in the individual himself
