A Pragmatic Study of Directive Speech Acts Used by Characters in War for the Planet of the Apes Movie Script
This study aims to examine the use of directive speech acts in the movie script “War for the Planet of the Apes”, analyze their frequency, and identify the contextual factors that influence the speakers’ use of these acts. Using a qualitative research method with a descriptive approach, this study has found 57 data containing directive speech acts to be categorized into seven different types based on Searle (1979), including command, suggestion, request, invitation, begging, forbidding, and warning. The type of directive speech act that appears the most is command (49.1%), which shows that the script of “War for the Planet of the Apes" is very thick with military style and authority. The least frequent type is forbidding (3.5%), reflecting that this movie script focuses more on positive directives than negative ones. This research contributes to pragmatic studies by showing that directive speech acts play a significant role in creating screenplays and offer scriptwriters insight into how to create inviting narratives through linguistic strategies

A Literature review on Why Animals Cannot Acquire Human Language
The objective of this study is to comprehend the underlying factors that preclude the acquisition of human language by animals. To this end, a comprehensive review of experiments conducted on parrots and anthropoid apes has been undertaken. The research employs a qualitative approach, underpinned by a literature review method, with a focus on the cognitive and neurological functions of animals in the context of communication. The primary data have been sourced from a range of previous studies, including but not limited to: Irene Pepperberg’s long-term experiment with the African grey parrot Alex; the Gua project by Robert Yerkes; and the research conducted by the Kellogg family, as well as William Henry Furness III’s research on chimpanzees and orangutans. The findings demonstrate that while certain animals possess the capacity to imitate human sounds, respond to verbal commands, and comprehend specific concepts, their communication cannot be categorised as language. It has been demonstrated that parrots such as Alex and Cosmo have the capacity to associate words with objects and express simple intentions. However, their ability remains constrained by imitation and associative learning. In a similar manner, anthropoid apes such as Gua exhibited marked intelligence and responsiveness. However, due to anatomical and neurological limitations, they were unable to produce human-like speech. In conclusion, it can be posited that language is a complex result of human cognitive evolution that involves symbolic thinking, abstract reasoning, and social awareness. While animals may communicate with apparent efficacy, they lack the neurological and anatomical systems that are the hallmark of true language. The present findings indicate that language functions not only as a medium for communication but also as a distinctive manifestation of human consciousness and thought
Slang Words in "Deadpool & Wolverine (2024)" Movie: A Sociolinguistic Study
This study investigates the discussion of slang found in the movie Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) from a sociolinguistic perspective. This study aims to classify and explain the types of slang according to the theory of Keith Allan and Kate Burridge (2006) used by the actors inthis film. This study also uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collected from the film's dialogue and divides it into types of slang according to Allan and Burridge's theory. This analysis also refers to Labov's (1972) sociolinguistic theory, which emphasizes therelationship between language and social context. These findings prove that slang in this film is not only a form of communication using informal language but also a tool for expressing solidarity and building character identity. The use of slang also reflects culturaltrends that show how language also functions as a form of familiarity within a group. Additionally, the use of slang in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024) greatly influences the humor and tone of the film. The characters, especially Deadpool, often use slang to convey sarcasm, irony, and humor, increasing audience engagement and reinforcing the film's distinctive conversational style
