Information searching behavior in research writing among the senior high school students in a private maritime university
Abstract onlyThis study was made on the K12 students of a maritime university in Iloilo City and determined to investigate utilization of information resources for research writing of the integrated library services in terms of printed and all other “in-house” resources and the online services in terms of the search engines Google, Yahoo or any other. Student demographics were made to interplay with frequency of use, amount of information found therein, and experiences of ease, effectiveness, convenience and accessibility when searching for informational needs along the initial formulation of a research study like search for topic, title, etc. The one-shot survey design was used to gather data on a selected sample of 239 K12 students. This given population had a male student majority of mostly 17 year-olds enrolled in the pre-baccalaureate maritime academic track, with nearly one third coming from public junior high schools. The printed materials were the most frequently used and Google was the popular search engine. The trend was for the same materials to be easiest, effective, convenient and accessible, with the most quantity of information found from or accessed through them. There were significant relationships of the information resources with research writing content for the easier aspects of research content like search for topic, choice of title, review of related literature along the demographic factors of academic track, class section and sex. The two initial null hypotheses of the study were upheld, but the last one rejected somehow revealing that the information sources were significantly related as to usefulness and positive experience with the aspects of research writing content.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster in Library and Information Scienc
Growth performance of native chicken chicks as influenced by different levels of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.) as feed additive
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted from February 21, 2020 to March 21, 2020 at Pulao, Dumangas, Iloilo to determine the growth performance of broiler native chicken chicks as influenced by different levels of turmeric (Curcuma longa L.). The experimental treatments consisted of different levels (0.1, 0.5, 1 and 1.5%) of turmeric powder mixed with pure CPU formulated feeds. Pure CPU booster feeds with turmeric content served as positive control and CPU booster feds without turmeric was used as negative control. One hundred-eighty day-old native chicken chicks were used and were randomly allotted into six treatments. These were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The experiment was done for thirty days. The data were statistically analysed using the analysis of variance for a randomized complete block design. Results showed that liveweight gain of native chicken chicks ranged from 39.22 g to 44.97 g, feed consumption from 74.74 g to 85.31 g, feed efficiency from 2.51 g to 2.72 g and survival percentage from 80 to 96.67. Results of this study revealed that the different levels of dehydrated turmeric powder did not significantly (P>0.5) affect the liveweight gain, feed consumption, feed efficiency, and survival rate of the native chickens. Thus it can be said that the growth performance of native chicken chicks was not affected by the different levels of turmeric powder.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur
Tryk: A mobile transportation application using Bellman Ford algorithm
Abstract onlyTryk is a mobile transportation application for a transport service provider that facilitates communication between the commuters and tricycle drivers regarding transportation services with the localities. Tryk is linked to the global positioning system (GPS), a navigations satellite system that provides location, velocity and time synchronization. The main features of the system conveniently allows to connect the commuters and drivers for transportation services, uses the Bellman Ford Algorithm to determine the shortest path from pick-up point to travel destination based on LTFRB transport fare and travel distance, provides the users with an interface for selecting point of origin, destination and ride type and administering particularly on ensuring the validity and reliability of transport services by the registered tricycle drivers. The Rapid Application Development model was used as modification of the modules throughout the process of development caters to the needs of the software without affecting the end product. It has the facility to frequently receive feedback from the users directly interfacing with the application during the development process.
Experts and users feedback showed that the application was able to conveniently connect commuters and drivers for transportation services in determining the shortest path.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Science in Computer Scienc
Production practices of sugarcane planters in Passi City, Iloilo
Abstract onlyThis study was conducted in Passi City in order to determine the farming practices of the sugarcane farmers, the negative effects to the environment, and their problems and recommendations. Data were gathered from 130 farmers respondents using a content validated and pre-tested researcher-made interview schedule. The data gathered were subjected to descriptive analysis. Results of the study revealed that the sugarcane farmers in Passi City were married males on their 50s, Roman Catholics, with college level of education and had business as other source of income. The sugar cane planters owned 5 to 10 ha of land with hilly topography which have been planted with sugarcane for not more than 10 years and producing 60 to 80 tons/ha. Their farming practices included the use tractor for land preparation, use of SPHL 84924 and B150 sugarcane varieties, ratooning up to the third cropping, hilling up twice per cropping, application of herbicides, fertilizers, manual harvesting and burning of plant residues. Application of herbicides, synthetic fertilizers and pesticides are considered by them as having negative effects to the environment such as toxic to the soil, makes the soil acidic with continued use and kills fishes and aquatic organisms. Lack of farm laborers, climate change, and rat infestation were identified as major problems of the sugarcane farmers, of which they recommend the development of farm machines for harvesting, discouraging of burning of plant residues, and development of rat control technology.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Environmental Managemen
Design, fabrication, and evaluation of downdraft kiln for the production of lime from slipper-cupped oyster (Crassostrea iredalei, Faustino 1932) shells
Special paper abstractSlipper-cupped oyster shell contains 95% calcium carbonate and is considered as a promising source of lime in the future. This study aimed to design, fabricate, and evaluate a downdraft kiln to produce lime from Slipper-cupped oyster shells. Three kilograms of shells were calcined at 200 °C for 30, 60, and 90 minutes, respectively, with 50 °C increment up to 500 °C which was the highest temperature the kiln had withstood. Calcined shells were powdered using LA Abrasion equipment for 150 seconds and the products obtained were characterized by particle size distribution using the Standard Tyler Sieve and calcium oxide content analysis conducted by the Regional Feed Laboratory. The results for particle size distribution showed that at temperature of 300 °C and residence time of 60 minutes, particle sizes smaller than 0.3 mm is 55.66 percent of the total mass which is greater compared to other trials.
The results for percent calcium oxide (CaO) showed that the optimum operating temperature and residence time of the downdraft kiln in calcining Slipper-cupped oyster shell must be at a temperature of 400 °C and residence time of thirty (30) minutes to produce 54.726 % CaO can be considered already a very high-quality lime. Percent CaO of other trials is also greater than 50% and can also be categorized as high-quality lime.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Chemical Engineerin
The effects of different levels of fertilizers applied to lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) inoculated with arbuscular mycorrhiza
The study was conducted from November 15, 2019, to January 10, 2020, at the Research and Development Area, Central Philippine University, Jaro, Iloilo City. This study aimed to determine the effects of different levels of fertilizers on the growth and yield of lettuce inoculated with mycorrhizal inoculum. The inoculum is a soil-based biofertilizer composed of dried roots that contain vesicular-arbuscular mycorrhiza (VAM), a product of the University of the Philippines at Los Banos, Laguna. The treatments were 25%, 50%, 75% of the recommended amount of fertilizer for lettuce infected with mycorrhiza, positive control (not infected with mycorrhiza but received the 100% recommend amount of fertilizer for lettuce) and negative control (infected with mycorrhiza but no fertilizer). These were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The results showed that plants from different treatments did not significantly differ in plant height, number of leaves, and leaf area index (LAI). However, in terms of fresh weight, plants from the positive control treatment were significantly heavier than those in the other treatments. Also, there is no significant difference observed on the fresh weights of lettuce applied with mycorrhizal inoculum receiving different levels (0%, 25%, 50%, and 75%) of the recommended rates of fertilizers. Thus, the use of mycorrhizal inoculum did not increase the yield of lettuce regardless of the amount of fertilizer applied.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur
