Abstract onlyThis study focused on optimizing the existing ARUGA Hydroponics System in Pavia, Iloilo, by developing it into an IoT-powered automated greenhouse facility designed to overcome the limitations of traditional manual hydroponic systems. The initial assessment of the manual setup revealed key operational inefficiencies, including inconsistent nutrient dosing, lack of environmental control, labor-intensive processes, and the absence of real-time data monitoring. To address these challenges, a smart automation system was developed using the ESP32 microcontroller as the central unit, integrating various sensors and actuators such as DHT22 sensors for temperature and humidity, pH and TDS sensors, water temperature sensors, peristaltic pumps for nutrient dosing, and climate control components like fans and sprinklers. Accuracy testing showed minimal deviations, with RMSE values of 0.3858°C for temperature, 0.5619% RH for humidity, 0.0637 for pH, and 6.63 ppm for TDS, indicating reliable sensor performance. Functional trials confirmed consistent actuator response in all 10 test iterations. The system also reduced labor demands from 7 days/week to just 2, cutting monthly labor costs from ₱4,200 to ₱1,200, leading to ₱3,000 in monthly savings, making the system a practical and cost-effective solution for small-scale hydroponic farming.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Electronics Engineerin

Abstract onlyThis study aimed to evaluate the effect of the SWBST Framework in improving the summarizing skills of the pupils. The SWBST Framework was implemented as part of the regular classroom instruction, with Grade 4 pupils in a particular public school in Jaro, Iloilo City chosen for the pretest and posttest. The researchers used four different stories with 5 - item questionnaires to test the level of competency of pupils when using the framework. After the SWBST Framework intervention, the pupils' scores were fairly competent. The mean score in the pretest was 2.45, while the mean score for the posttest was 4.90, which means highly competent. The study concluded that the SWBST Framework improved the summarizing skills among pupils and showed its effectiveness when using this framework. It can help pupils to think critically about the plot, characters, and structure of a story by identifying and summarizing the important parts of a story using the SWBST Framework. This increased level of interaction with the text can improve learners’ grasp of the story as well as their capacity to create connections, draw conclusions, and recognize important themes. This also advocates that SWBST framework assist pupils in summarizing when reading a story. The results of this study may help pupils, teachers, schools, and future researchers in improving instruction in summarizing. Also, curriculum creators can understand better the effect of SWBST Framework as a strategy in improving skills in summarizing a story by elementary learners.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Elementary Educatio

Abstract onlyA crisis center facility serves as a vital resource, offering immediate support, essential services, and interventions to individuals experiencing urgent mental health, emotional, or situational challenges. Republic Act No. 9344, also known as the "Juvenile Justice and Welfare Act," defines the Juvenile Justice and Welfare System as a system that deals with children who are at risk or in conflict with the law and provides child appropriate proceedings. Every municipality needs a 24-hour residential home established by the local government where the child resides providing shelter protection and safety. The Municipality of Dumangas currently lacks dedicated facility to cater children in conflict with the law, critical number of crime rates by juveniles, and no facility to cater abused individuals. To address these concerns, a proposed two-storey Balay Paglaum is intended for construction, the design is primarily based on standard codes, etc. This study consists of architectural, structural, electrical, electronics, and plumbing designs which follow the various standards and codes of practice along with construction specifications, cost estimates, and work scheduling. Additionally, green technologies such as rainwater collection system, and flexible and interactive space integrated into the design are considered as the best building features. The proposed structure is 1063.80 sq. m. with an estimated cost of PHP 31,444,861.04, to be funded by the Local Government of Dumangas with expected construction period of 240 working days. Awareness of Iloilo City's heritage attractions among tourism management students in a Private University

Full text availableAwareness of heritage attractions is important for tourism students to understand and promote sustainable tourism practices. This study evaluated the awareness of Iloilo's heritage attractions among 200 first- and second-year Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management (BSTM) students at a private university, selected using quota sampling. A researcher-made quiz-type questionnaire was used in collecting data. The results indicated that students, in general, were very familiar across all categories of demographics. However, slight variations were seen in sex and year level. Females and second-year students had slightly higher awareness, which could be attributed to greater cultural interest and academic exposure. While the overall awareness levels were high, gaps in knowledge were observed related to lesser-known heritage sites, traditional cuisines, and minor cultural events. Therefore, there is a need for better heritage education within the curriculum. Significant differences in awareness between males and females, younger and older students, local and non-local places of residence, and between year levels were not established. These findings show that heritage education must be integrated into the tourism curriculum, since future professionals should be equipped to advocate for cultural preservation and sustainable tourism practices. This study underlines the need for reforms to bridge existing knowledge gaps and broaden the understanding of the diverse cultural heritage of Iloilo by the next generation of tourism professionals.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Tourism Managemen

Flood preparation experiences of barangay officials in selected sitios in a certain barangay

Full text availableThis research study aimed to explore the preparation experiences of barangay officials in the events of flooding to enhance disaster management in flood-risk communities. This study employed a phenomenological approach, and the researchers purposely selected eight barangay officials because they are closely exposed to the flooding. Interviews and observations were conducted, and Braun and Clarke's six-phase thematic analysis framework was utilized in the data analysis. The study findings outlined some of the significant challenges posed by recurrent flooding, such as disturbance of livelihoods and even safety due to inadequate infrastructure and even limited resources. Measures have been undertaken by barangay officials, including training programs, community cooperation, and evacuation planning. There exist gaps, though, in terms of the resources, such as inadequate availability of life jackets, boats, and medical kits to enable effective preparation, as well as the geographical location of the participants which leaves them prone to flooding. Among other points that the participants identified include improved drainage systems, resources, and livelihood support targeted to build the community's resilience. The study has concluded that while local actions did have some progress in preparedness for flooding events, a predominately reactive system still exists, and this continues to limit adequate disaster response. Gaps can be bridged through sustainable planning, augmentation of resources, and consistent policy reinforcement to mitigate the growing risks of flooding in such vulnerable areas.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Nursin

Harnessing social media for religious peacebuilding: Faith in the digital age

    No full text
Journal articleThis study explores social media’s potential as a tool for religious peacebuilding, focusing on its capacity to foster harmony through faith-based values in a digitally connected world. With 5.24 billion users globally and 90.8 million in the Philippines, where religion shapes cultural identity, social media offers unprecedented opportunities to connect faith communities, amplify sacred narratives, mobilize action, and educate for peace. Drawing on global and Philippine examples, we examine how platforms like Facebook, X, and TikTok channel religious teachings to promote reconciliation, while addressing challenges like polarization, misinformation, hostility, and slacktivism. Historical narratives, including Hong Kong’s Yellow Umbrella Movement and the Philippines’ #FaithForTruth campaign, illustrate faith’s role in digital peacebuilding. Eight strategies, grounded in religious ethics, propose harnessing social media’s strengths: global reach, real-time engagement, education, and community-building to counter division. By embedding values like forgiveness and truth, religion transforms social media into a sacred space for peace, offering a model for conflict-affected regions like Mindanao

    No full text
Journal articleThis study investigated the abundance, diversity, and antibiotic resistance patterns of Aeromonas spp. in well water from five selected barangays (villages) in Iloilo City, alongside heterotrophic bacterial counts and physicochemical parameters during the dry (March to May) and wet (June to August) seasons. Presumptive Aeromonas counts reached 10³ CFU/mL during the dry season and 10² CFU/mL during the wet season, while heterotrophic plate counts peaked at 10⁴ CFU/mL and 10³ CFU/mL, respectively. Seasonal variations significantly influenced water quality, with higher temperatures, biochemical oxygen demand, and total dissolved solids recorded during the dry season, while dissolved oxygen levels were elevated during the wet season (p Aeromonas hydrophila was the most prevalent (59%), followed by A. veronii (21%). Other predominant bacterial species included Escherichia coli (12%), Enterococcus faecium (5%), and Staphylococcus aureus (7%), the latter found only in the wet season. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing of 10 antibiotics commonly used in human-veterinary medicine, and aquaculture, revealed high resistance to amoxicillin (A. hydrophila: 98.6%; A. veronii: 96%; E. faecium: 100%; E. coli: 100%; : 100%), erythromycin (100%; 60%; 100%; 100%; 100%), and neomycin (97.1%; 92%; 50%; 57.1%; 100%). Multidrug resistance was widespread, with MAR indices exceeding 0.2, indicating substantial antibiotic exposure and contamination from high-risk sources. This is the first report on the load, composition, and antibiotic resistance of Aeromonas spp. in well water in the Philippines, underscoring the need for continuous microbial monitoring, improved well-water disinfection, and strengthened antibiotic stewardship to mitigate public health risks associated with contaminated groundwater sources

Journal articleThe May Measurement Month (MMM) campaign was carried out in the Philippines in 2022 with the aim of raising awareness of raised blood pressure (BP). Here, we report on the findings of the campaign. Adults aged ≥18 years were recruited opportunistically at hospitals, doctor‘s clinics, health centres under local government units, private companies (pharmaceutical companies and corporates), drug stores, and others. Three seated BP readings were taken for each participant, along with the completion of a questionnaire on demographics, lifestyle factors, and comorbidities. Hypertension was defined as a systolic BP ≥140 mmHg and/or diastolic BP ≥90 mmHg or being on antihypertensive medication. Controlled BP was defined as being on antihypertensive medication with a BP <140/90 mmHg. Multiple imputation was used to estimate any missing BP readings. In total, 42 526 were screened, with a mean age of 46.0 years, and 59.9% were female. Of all participants, 18 390 (43.2%) had hypertension, of whom 13 144 (71.5%) were aware, and 11 738 (63.8%) were on antihypertensive medication. Of those on antihypertensive medication, 2792 (23.8%) had controlled BP, and of all participants with hypertension, 15.2% had controlled BP. The MMM campaign in the Philippines identified significant numbers of participants with either untreated or inadequately treated hypertension. The campaign resulted in higher awareness with regard to hypertension diagnosis, treatment, and control
