"Hybrid" high school teachers of English: Their lived experiences

    Get PDF
Abstract onlyTeaching is a process in which one individual makes something known to another individual (Colakkadioglu, 2016). There are numerous issues involving the process of teaching and learning. Besides parents, teachers play a very crucial role in developing a learner’s interest towards a subject or the language. Teachers should become learners by thinking about the situation and by understanding it through different points of view. Brubaker (2016) adds that schools in rural areas often have difficulty to staff schools and frequently appointed out-of-field due to teachers’ shortages. Out-of-field teaching (OFT) is defined as a phenomenon in which qualified teachers teach subjects, learning areas or year levels they are not formally qualified to teach (Ingersoll et.al, 2013). It has been inevitably occurring for years as education continues to transform among developing countries worldwide. Out-of-field teaching appeared as an important issue that can impact the teachers' sense of effectiveness. Ingersoll, R. M. (2004), states that out-of-field teaching is a phenomenon that can impact on the educational experiences of students, especially in the public schools. Teaching any lesson other than English is very difficult for individuals without a deep knowledge or background about the field. Their lack of qualifications and experience relevant to their appointments can present significant challenges to their induction within the profession. If a teacher with the proper certification is not available, a school district tries to fill the position with teachers certified to teach in other areas. If those teachers are not available, administrators usually employ long term substitutes rather than to enlarge or to cancel classes. People who teach subjects in which they have little or no background usually loathe it. It does not sound like a proper educational practice. Under-prepared teachers who rely heavily on the textbook severely inhibit effective learning of students (Brubaker, 2016). The purpose of this study was to examine, through the lens of phenomenology, the lived experiences of the out-of-field high school teachers. According to Gabiota (2019), Out-of-Field Teachers are more commonly known and called as Hybrid Teachers in the Province of Guimaras. This present study sought to understand how the lived experiences of these Hybrid Teachers impact their professional development and impede or promote quality teaching. This study also examined their experiences and how those experiences shape the effectiveness and sustainability of quality education in public schools. According to Carillo and Geraldoy (2020), and with the more number of English major applicants compared to the other majors, the administration is then faced to a decision of hiring these English majors with the condition of having them to teach other subjects outside of their field of expertise. Objective of the Study The objective of this study was to describe the lived experiences of the “hybrid" high school teachers in public high schools in the Province of Guimaras.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Arts in English Language and Literatur

Abstract onlyThis research was conducted to determine the level of knowledge, the quality of experience, the extent of expectations and the level of satisfaction of operations staff on audit services of a Microfinance NGO in Iloilo. A subject organization was chosen for this study to prove that level of knowledge, perceived quality of experience, and extent of expectations are items for consideration in measuring the level of satisfaction on audit services. In the rationale, this study sought to confirm claims of lack of knowledge and unmet expectations of operations staff results to the dissatisfaction rating received by the internal audit department of the subject organization. In some studies, information satisfaction or knowledge about a product or service is an item contributing to disconfirmation or eventual dissatisfaction of a customer and is usually correlated to expectation formation as another satisfaction item in what all call Expectation Disconfirmation (EDT) model. Through a survey and analysis of data gathered, this study revealed that knowledge has nothing to do with ones’ level of satisfaction as it did not show any significant relationship. On the other hand, experience and expectation have proven to be the major satisfaction items for consideration with significant relationship to ones’ level of satisfaction as what several studies have also shown.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Business Administratio

Abstract onlyThe pharmaceutical industry has continuously developed from merely requiring approved product's safety and efficacy to ensuring product satisfaction or its market acceptability to attain market authorization. The present research is a manifestation of this development. This study assesses the market acceptability of Pomelo mosquito repellent spray formulations in 50% and 75% concentrations in Arac, Passi, Iloilo, and F. Palmares, Passi, due to the prevalent Dengue cases in these areas. The market acceptability of each formulations were measured through surveys and utilization of a multi-stage random sampling technique. Data were then collected based on the physical standard of spray formulations using the Likert 7-point scale survey questionnaires. The data gathered were then analyzed by computing the mean of the respondents’ ratings during the assessment of formulations. Findings show that there is higher market acceptability in rural areas such as Arac, Passi, Iloilo. It also revealed that although both formulations garnered favorable receptions among the public, the 75% formulations was rated as preferable. In addition, empirical results utilizing One-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and a T-test for Independent samples indicated that factors such as age, educational attainment, monthly income, and family history of Dengue Fever have a significant influence on the respondents’ perceptions towards the formulations.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Pharmac

Conference paperFive of the seven species of pawikan (sea turtles) are found in the Philippine seas. These are Olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea), Hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), Green sea (Chelonia mydas), Loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), and Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea). All of these are threatened species due to predation (animals and humans), climate change, harvesting of eggs, juveniles and adults, bycatch, and habitat degradation. Thus, to protect the species, several laws, policies, and programs have been passed and implemented by the Philippines government since 1979 (Marine Wild Fauna Watch of the Philippines (MWFWP), 2014). However, despite the efforts to protect the pawikan, reports about dead sea turtles due to various causes are becoming frequent than ever. Furthermore, public posts on Facebook about dead pawikan by private individuals are increasing. On the other hand, data on the mortality causes of sea turtles remain scarce as of the moment. Hence, to provide additional data, this study was conducted

Abstract onlyThis study was conducted to determine the overall proficiency of mechanics of writing which includes spelling, punctuation, subject-verb agreement, capitalization, and word choice and to develop a module based on the results to enhance the writing proficiency of the learners, especially on the writing conventions. The respondents of this study were the Grade 10 students of the selected private schools in Iloilo City in the academic year 2019-2020. Ten percent of each of the total population of the selected private schools with a total of 62 respondents participated in the study. The Input-Process- Output (IPO) Model, a model commonly used in action research where intervention or solution is necessary to solve the identified problem was adapted. Quantitative approach was used to determine the proficiency of the students on the mechanics of writing. The study revealed that the overall proficiency on mechanics of writing of the Grade 10 in selected private schools in Iloilo City is “Developing,” which means that the student at this level possesses minimum knowledge and skills and core understanding, and needs help throughout the performance of authentic tasks. Thus, a module was developed to enhance the learners’ level of proficiency.Includes bibliographical referencesMaster of Arts in English Language and Literatur

In vitro anthelmintic activity of makabuhay (Tinospora rumphii B.), betel nut (Areca catechu L.) and bitter yam (Dioscorea dumetorum D.) juice extracts and their combination against roundworm (Ascaridia galli) isolated from Philippine native chicken

Abstract onlyThis study was conducted to determine the effectiveness of makabuhay, betel nut, and bitter yam extracts against Ascaridia galli worms isolated from Philippine native chicken. This was conducted at CPU-CARES Research and Development Learning Building, Jaro, Iloilo City from February 7 - 8, 2019. The treatments consisted of juice extracts of makabuhay, betel nut, and bitter yam, 50:50 combinations of these 3 extracts. Albendazole and physiological saline were used as a positive and negative control, respectively. The treatments were replicated three times and laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD). Results revealed that worms showed significant signs of paralysis on the 6th hr when treated with 100% BYE (100%) and a mixture of 50% MSE and 50% BYE (96.67%). The paralyzing effects of these plant extracts were comparable with Albendazole (100%). However, on the 18th hr of PE, all plant extracts were as potent as albendazole up to the 24th hr of PE. In terms of percent mortality, makabuhay, betel nut, bitter yam, and their combinations were equally potent in killing A. galli worms and were comparable with Albendazole. It can be concluded that all plant extracts and their combinations significantly affect the %WMI and %M of A. galli worms and comparable to the synthetic dewormer.Includes bibliographical referencesBachelor of Science in Agricultur
